The State of the Hispanic Caregiver White Paper, Comfort Plus, and me. #CaregiverComfort

$

Here are some interesting facts - according to a White Paper The State of the Hispanic Caregiver just released by medical supplier resource company Comfort Plus, there are roughly 4,000,000 Hispanics over the age of 65 in the U.S. By 2050, elderly Hispanics share will almost triple to 17 percent from 6 percent in 2005. The report hones in on the role of Hispanic caregivers who on average are significantly younger than their non-Hispanic counterparts. Yup. This will describe us in a few years. Though, thankfully, our moms are still healthy and living on their own, the Hubster and I have already begun discussing our future living situations as they will pertain to our parents. Our discussion ties into this fact:

"Hispanic caregivers are much more likely to live with children or grandchildren (48% compared to 32% non-Hispanics), but they tend to report the most stress factors from caregiving."

I couldn't imagine our parents not living with us (or with another family member) when it gets to the point where they need some extra help. It would just be too weird. Neither one of us see a nursing home as an option for our parents in the future so we're slowly educating ourselves about caregiving, new products out there for the elderly folk and any tips that other caregivers may have. As it so happens, what we often wonder about is what others wonder about too. Here are a few of our questions and concerns:

The White Paper referenced above addresses the fact that 9 out of 10 caregivers interviewed cited that they need more information on a variety of caregiver topics, and managing incontinence issues was a top concern.

As a child, I remember my mom having to purchase products to help manage incontinence issues with my Nana and shipping them to Mexico because they are just so much more expensive over there. Though my mom hopes that it will never have to be like that with her, the truth is that I really should be educating myself on what's out there and how it's not something to be ashamed of. It's natural. It's life. And better to be prepared, right?

I'm happy to see companies like Comfort Plus, a retailer that promotes Tranquility products, who are making an effort to assist caregivers with resources, tips and help with connecting them to incontinence products they may need. They take their responsibility a step further with their newly revamped website (www.comfortplusonline.com). It has a dedicated Spanish-language section, “Comfort Plus Para Ti” that provides bilingual access to resources for Hispanic caregivers while helping users find the correct caregiver and incontinence products they need. Very thoughtful, que no? I mean, sure, they promote their own Tranquility products - but that's only because they stand by their product. And if you're currently in the market for incontinence products, please consider Tranquility products.

  • Tranquility products are the most absorbent products on the market. For that reason, they require fewer changes and permit lasting comfort.
  • Tranquility products provide unsurpassed skin dryness, odor elimination, and leakage protection.
  • Tranquility products save money for the user due to their efficiency.
  • Tranquility products require fewer changes due to their superior absorbency. This makes the user more comfortable and requires less work from the caregiver.

I urge you to connect with Comfort Plus via their social sites and their website. If you're currently in a position where your need to purchase incontinence products for your loved one or just want to learn more about what your responsibilities will be as a caregiver, please take a second and engage with them online. The White Paper is also full of interesting facts, resources and all kinds of statistics. If nothing else, it's a really interesting read.

Tips for Traveling with Young Kids

Tips for Traveling with Kids Under 2
Summer is here and for us this means our first staycation as a family will FINALLY become a reality. We're packing up the car, the kids and all of our necessities and heading to Carlsbad where we're lounge in the Carlsbad Seapointe Resort, spend a day at Legoland, take bike rides, long strolls on the beach and so many other activities that I'm going to need an actual vacation to recuperate from our staycation.

Our family consists of me, the Hubster, our 4.5 year old and our one year old. Our oldest has been out of town before. We've spent days in Mexico and Walt Disney World and along the way I've picked up a few tips that we will use with our one year old. These tips include:

Packing a toiletries bag for each person. Include their must-haves (in travel versions) including little tubes of sunscreen, sanitizing wipes, baby wipes, lotion, toothpaste, toilet seat covers, etc. Yes, it may seem excessive to pack a bag for each member, but I would rather have too many toiletries, than not enough and have to shell out big money for small things. Include those disposable changing pads for babies and you can just throw the baby's toiletries bag in your handbag when it's time to head out for an adventure.

Electronic entertainment. I'm not one to let my kid(s) use electronics in the car while running errands, but if they're going to be in the car for hours then yes, bring on the games, movies, apps, etc. Don't forget to pack the car chargers and any other external batter power that you may have. If don't have those, it may be a good idea to get some. I would also recommend that you get a child-proof case your electronics. If you have an iPad or iPod, Fisher-Price makes fun cases that protect the device, and look cute too!

Stock up on movies and apps. Unfortunately, we don't have a portable DVD player or TVs in our car. We'll instead be taking our iPads and filling them up with movies, TV shows and apps. This is where the digital download copies come in handy (you know, the ones that come in the movie combo packs). And because we don't have 3G/4G on our devices, we can't depend on Hulu, Netflix, I Heart Radio, etc. for our entertainment and you probably shouldn't either. Internet connection can fall through depending on where you're traveling so try to keep all media non-streamable and avoid the whines of kids (and adults) every time the movie stops to reload.

Blankets, pillows and ear buds. They'll use these items every time they sleep and they'll sleep much longer because they're going to be comfortable. Win-win.

Pack a first aid kit. Fill it up with medicine you don't think you'll need including Pasta de Lassar (a multi-purpose skin protectant cream), cold and flu medicine, thermometer, Boogie Wipes, Benedryl, etc.

Snacks and drinks. This is such a no-brainer, but I wanted to emphasize just how important it is to keep a kid fed, especially a kid under 2. A fed kid is a happy kid and that's what traveling with kids is all about. Whatever you pack, ensure that it doesn't melt, drip or spill. That means no chocolate, pudding and anything that cannot be poured into a cup with a straw. You can even take this a step further and include new snacks that they haven't tried yet, or good-for-them foods like multi-vitamins that can be mixed with drinks (like alternaVites Kids). I also suggest dried fruits and freeze-dried snacks like Funky Monkey that have three servings of fruit per ounce. Of course, you can't go wrong with Welch’s Fruit Snacks either. Stock up on water and maybe includes some 100% juice in there as a treat? Frozen juice boxes double as ice packs and are ready to drink cold later in the day. If you're nursing, I recommend packing some Milkin' Cookies for yourself. It'll help keep your milk supply up and they're delicious.

Portable high-chair. Not every place that you visit will have a high chair. Heck, we don't either but we have a Prince Lionheart bebePod Flex seat that works as a high-chair for us. We sit it on the counter, stick the baby in there and put on the tray and voila, a high chair! Of course, there are portable high chairs that you can purchase. These attach to the rim of the table and hold the baby up there safely. We had one of these for our first born (because they always get the best stuff) and it came in handy.

Pack less clothes. Yes, LESS clothes. Whatever you have packed for your trip, pack less. It's easy to do this for babies - just pack them rompers. They are my go-to outfits because they are all one piece and when I need to change his stinky diaper I just unbutton it from the bottom instead of taking off his entire pant. By the way, when you pack clothes, roll 'em up. Don't fold them because it takes up more space. I also use this tip in their drawers. Don't forget the hats. Preferably those with an SPF defense built in.

Stroller or wagon. We'll be sporting our new Britax B-Ready stroller, attach the scooter board and take it to Legoland. It's been on test drives already and I'm sure it's going to hold up just fine down in Carlsbad. I love the wheels on this stroller and it has A LOT of room down at the bottom. Such a great stroller for long days out on the town.

An infant sleeper. We used one when the baby was younger and what I loved most about it was the fact that it could be folded and taken on the road. It was very convenient to take along with us and it was the baby's home away from home when he used it.

I should clarify that I am not one to take everything plus the kitchen sink. Heck, I even forgo the diaper backpack most of the time choosing instead to carry a handbag that matches my outfit. I only do the bare bones packing for myself and the kids. What about you? Do you have any tips or must-have items for traveling with young kids? Do you pack more than you need, or are you like me where you pack the bare minimum?

alternaVites Kids - Product #Review and #Giveaway

If there is one thing that has been consistent in my kids lives it's vitamins. Since the days of giving them vitamins through a droplet, graduating to the chewables and finally (after much pushing from my oldest and the hubster), the gummies. Along comes this new, super cool way of giving the kids their much-needed vitamins in a fun way - alternaVites Kids. Think pixy stix - just a lot healthier.

AlternaVites Kids are quick-melting, travel quite nicely and can be mixed in with yogurt, smoothies, water, etc. OR they can be consumed directly from the package. Just pour a little of the crystals nice and slow onto the tongue, allow it to dissolve and then feed yourself some more.

About alternaVites Kids®

alternaVites Review

My oldest had the opportunity to try out a month's supply of alternaVites Kids in rasperry cotton candy flavor. I have to be honest... he was hesitant about trying them out. I think kids in general are like that though. Shove something in front of them, tell them to try it and you'll get this:

Hesitant, a need to inspect it first and figure out exactly what they're about to consume. Tell your kid to slowly pour some of the alternaVites Kids crystals slowly onto their tongue and this happens:

The whole thing gets poured into the mouth. Regardless, my boy LOVED these vitamins. I didn't have to remind him every day to take his vitamins. First thing he did when after he brushed his teeth was to go to the cupboard where I kept them and grab one.

For the sake of this review, I went ahead and tried one too even though just reading "cotton candy" in the title of the flavor made me shy away from it. I'm not crazy about overly sweet flavors and I envisioned it tasting just like cotton candy ice cream (another no-no for me). The alternaVites were definitely not overly sweet. The crystals are very small. Almost dust-like. The texture was very fine and they dissolve quickly on the tongue. The flavor itself has it's ups and downs. It's sweet, but not too sweet. However, it has a little of a chalky taste which I was not crazy about but the kid doesn't seem to mind. I would probably prefer it more mixed into a yogurt or something similar to that instead of just having it straight from the package.

The tiny package has a slit cut into it that allows you to rip it open with ease. I suggest cutting the top off with scissors instead. Why? Because when I followed the direction and just ripped off the tip of it, my son's saliva made the vitamins cluster together and it was impossible for him to have the rest of the package.

alternaVites Kids makes it fun for my kids to enjoy their vitamins. Kid approved!

Making Over My Man (starting with the undies). #MaLoUnderwear #CBias

$

Let me just start off my saying that I love the hubster and I have his unwritten permission to share pictures of his undies. More on that soon.

As a stay-at-home mami, my role has evolved and I find that besides purchasing clothing for myself and the kids, I also purchase the hubsters clothing. That is, everything but the undies. I know when I go undies shopping for myself I like prints and colors. Comfort goes by the wayside. The hubster, on the other hand, loves comfort and solid colors. I don't know why. I know that if I had to wear office attire every day I would at least spice up the rest of the clothes that I had to wear. But no, not him. He wears plain-colored undies and white shirts every.single.day. like the ones below. Yawn.

He keeps them for a long time and when he's ready for new ones? He buys the same ones over again! Ugh... no more! Needing to break the cycle we headed to Target where we worked on making over his underwear style.

I love Target. I love EVERYTHING about it. I love that it's trendy, is basically a one-stop shop thanks to its grocery department and it has a Starbucks inside. It's my home away from home.

We stop by the Dollar Spot section, browse and agree to let the kids have one thing each. This seems to happen every single time we come into Target. But it's okay because for $2 I can get them both to settle down and focus on getting some shopping done (and I can go through the women's clearance section too!).

We bypass the shoe section, the sleepwear section and even the women's section... because we are on a mission - to get the hubster cool underwear. Underwear that he would be proud to be wearing if something were to happen to his pants.

We finally make it to menswear and we see that there are undies on sale. Boring, same ol' same ol' undies. I grab him and lead him towards the undies jackpot - the MaLo Underwear section.

Although it is the size of an end cap, we take well over a half hour going through all the choices, designs and everything else involved with underwear shopping. I personally love the packaging. It's trendy, cool and modern. I love that Mario Lopez has an underwear line and that the hubster is willing to add some color and patterns to his underwear collection.

We begin by looking at tops. Our first decision is deciding between tank tops and v-neck tops. We notice a color difference in the package image and the actual color of the shirt. Sure, the hubster is willing to try color but purple is just too much to start off with. We decide on a white and red v-neck package instead.

Next on our list are briefs. The hubster prefers boxes briefs (because you all needed to know that), and so we look at what MaLo Underwear has to offer.

The briefs all have a cool pattern and the MaLo logo on the band. There are two different packages offered for boxer briefs and they each have two different designs. At $12.99 a package, they are affordable and cool looking at the same time. I'm also digging the logo.

We throw our choices in the cart, happy that the hubster is willing to step out of his comfort zone and we head home so he can try them out. I'll take a second to say that the hubster has some great assets and I can't wait to see them packaged in these cool underwear.

We opened up the packages at home and the first thing I notice is the softness in the clothing. They're as soft as my VS undies, but thankfully not as expensive. The v-neck shirts are cut lower than he's used to. They get put away into the drawer.

The undies are incredibly soft; like they've been washed a hundred times. The designs are cool and I'm happy to know that if he bends over and part of his underwear band shows, that it'll show the trendy MaLo logo and not something blah. I did notice, however, that the boxer briefs are cut shorter than the ones he has. I don't know how comfortable he'll be in them, but I'm sure he'll get used it.

I love my man in MaLo Underwear. I love that they're affordable and that I can finally go shopping for his undies without him being there and criticizing my choices. I hope that the MaLo Underwear collection will soon be available at every Target because honestly, every woman should be able to upgrade their husband's (or son's) underwear collection.

If you didn't get enough of my MaLo Underwear shopping experience, hop on over and see more of my shopping experience here (Google+ album).

Pasta de Lassar - A #Review and #Giveaway. Sponsored by @PastaDeLassar

I received a few bottles of Pasta de Lassar, the leading multi-purpose zinc oxide skin protectant in Mexico, to use on the baby and protect again diaper rashes. My babies seem to have extremely sensitive skin. My oldest, at 4.5 years old, still has eczema issues and his skin gets super dry and even cracks and bleeds. My youngest doesn't seem to take to any cheap body washes or lotions. Right now we're using Aveeno Body Wash.

Image courtesy of Pasta de Lassar
I was concerned and skeptical that Pasta de Lassar would work on my kids because they have such sensitive skin. I started using it on the little one, applying a little bit of it as a diaper rash cream. Then one night I put him in the bath and noticed that he had this crazy red rash all on his back and his little butt. I, of course, freaked out thinking that he must be allergic to the laundry detergent, body wash or who knows what else. I washed him down and then put some of the Pasta de Lassar on him hoping and crossing my fingers that it would do what it said it did on the box. Here's what it looked like before. Take note that I took this picture in his room and it was a bit dark, but you can still see the red rash. You can also see how it's bumpy and raised. Poor baby was scratching like he had ants on him.

Then I put the Pasta de Lassar. I applied enough to cover the area (it's thick and creamy and goes on like sunscreen).

In the morning I woke up to this:

Most of the rash was gone. What was left was the marks he made having been scratching his butt and behind the day before. The white stuff on his skin is the Pasta de Lassar that wasn't absorbed into his skin. I left it on there and by the evening his skin had cleared up.

So while I don't use Pasta de Lassar as a diaper rash cream religiously, I ALWAYS pull it out to rub on the kids whenever they have a rash, their skin breaks out because it's super dry, or when I catch them scratching their delicate skin.

I like that quality products from across the border are coming this way because it opens up the options that we have when shopping for products. You'll start seeing Pasta de Lassar everywhere pretty soon and you can say that you heard about it here first!

I'm a supportive soccer mom. The Olympian part is up to them. #WinningSmile #CrestSponsored

There are many things that we wish for our children when they are born. We wish for them to be happy, healthy and a contributing member to society. As a mami, I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders every day as I ensure that my kids grow up fulfilling these requirements. Of course, if they grow up to be Olympians, well that's not so bad either.

My youngest (at 4.5 years) is starting soccer in the Fall and I'll be the proud mami yelling from the side lines. Yes, I'm going to be THAT mom. The one that can't sit her butt down, the one practicing with him... the one finally learning the rules to the game since I have yet to play a soccer game myself. The hubster will be back in school during the soccer season so it will fall to me to ensure that he goes to practices, gets enough sleep and doesn't feel defeated when he loses a game (even if he kicks the winning goal to the wrong net). My ultimate goal? To get him to the Olympics. Reach for the stars, right?

Regardless of what happens, I will cheer for my boys to do their best. When my oldest did karate I was the mom in the minivan (cliche much?) doing the karate yells and teaching him how to block while we waited at the red stop lights. I'll do whatever I can to empower my kids and help them feel like they have the power to be as good as they want to be. Even if mami wasn't much of a sports player, that doesn't mean that they can't be. I'm hoping the sports gene got passed down from the Hubster. Otherwise, we're in trouble.

Procter & Gamble has recently launched a campaign, "Thank You, Mom" and as part of the campaign, I was given the opportunity to be on a call where questions were submitted and answered by Ondina Lopez... super mom to her wonderful kids who just happen to be hopeful-Olympians!

About Ondina Lopez

Ondina Lopez is the mom of London 2012 Olympic Games hopefuls Steven and Diana Lopez, and is the heart of the "First Family of Taekwondo". Her children, Steven, Jean, Mark and Diana are at the world elite level in Taekwondo. Steven, Mark and Diana made history when they each won gold at the 2005 World Taekwondo Championships, becoming the first three siblings in any sport to claim World Championship titles at the same event.

Ondina Lopez has done what any good mami does for her children to encourage them to pursue their dreams. Though they were a one-car family, they still managed to get their kids to practice, sometimes twice a day! Ondina turned on the dryer to heat up the garage so the kids could practice. During the summer she brought them cold ice drinks to keep them hydrated. She ensured that they always kept up with school work and never once pressured them to stay in the sport.

Ondina Lopez Taking Care of the Kids

So what part does P&G play in this? Well Crest and Oral-B Complete help give Taekwondo fighter Steven López (Ondina's son) the confidence to show off his healthy, winning smile that he'll be using this Summer.

Steven López, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and bronze medalist will be competing in the 80kg division at this year’s Games. Crest and Oral-B Complete have extended their partnership with Steven to include Steven’s mother, Ondina López, highlighting the importance mom’s support can play in an athlete’s success.

How I Tackle Parenting's Messes and Stresses. The Spanglish version. #HuggiesLatino

$

0
When I found out that I was pregnant with my second child the first thought that came to my head was, "oh no... diapers!" Potty training my oldest has been my greatest claim to victory in mamihood. I was not prepared to do it again... and truthfully I'm still not prepared and that's why I keep my kid in Snug & Dry Huggies (the ones with Mickey on them).

I would have loved to do cloth diapers but lack of a diaper service around here rendered it a no-go because this mami is NOT going to wash todo el poop a mano. No, gracias. We'll go the Huggies route until it's time to move one.

So how do I tackle all of parenting's messes and stresses? Con mucho cloro, wipes y paciencia.

Everywhere I go I carry wipes. Not just your regular butt-cleaning Natural Care Huggies wipes, but disinfecting wipes too. You wouldn't believe how many tubs I go through in a year. Wipes have cleaned up more puke, poop and dirt than anything else that I have used. ¿Y el cloro? Well I use that to disinfect all his play things and anything else that comes in second-hand via garage sales. It freaks me out to think that he'll get some crazy disease because he decided to take a toy and lick it clean. I always make sure that his play things are clean before he goes to town on them.

I'm fortunate that my kids take pretty good care of their clothes so I'm not constantly having to search online for the best way to clean mustard off of a white shirt. My clothes? Olvidate. I don't change to go out until we're practically out the door. Their sticky hands have a way of finding themselves on me... always!

Stress? I deal with it using laughter and some deep breaths. My walking one-year old has officially made me THAT mom. The one that everybody stares at and feels bad for. It only occurred to me that I was that type of mami yesterday.

After two hours of being on a catamaran (we went whale watching), my youngest was done. He was walking/crawling everywhere, in between everyone's feet and I actually had to drag him out of the mini-kitchen on board by his feet. When I got up after doing so I saw other parents staring at me and that's when it dawned on me. They had that "look" that spoke a thousand words. So what did I do? I took my kids, sat down on one of the benches and took a deep breath. I accepted what my life was and I laughed because I never thought that I would be the one chasing kids. But I am and I envision myself doing so until I can lay down the law on the baby and raise him right. In the mean time, I'll be gathering stories to tell my grandchildren when the time comes and perhaps I'll post a few on the Huggies Latino Facebook page (there's a chance I win a fully-stocked Huggies diaper bag).

Frugal Friday: Vintage Tips

$
0
0
I’m an avid collector of vintage and antique cookbooks. Most include tips for a frugal household, saving time, money, or simply bringing some extra joy to the daily grind. This week, we’re sharing a few of those that might be worth a try (or just a good laugh).

The books:
Good Housekeeping’s Book of Menus, Recipes, and Household Discoveries, 9th ed., 1925;
Ruth Wakefield’s Toll House Tried and True Recipes, 15th ed.,1941; and
Betty Crocker’s New Picture Cook Book, 1st ed.,1961.

General Household Hints

These really are from a different era.

Betty Crocker’s hints to “refresh your spirits”:
  • “Every morning before breakfast, comb hair, apply makeup and a dash of cologne. Does wonders for your morale and your family’s, too!”
  • “Think pleasant thoughts while working and a chore will become a labor of love”.
  • “Have a hobby. Garden, paint pictures, look through magazines for home planning ideas, read a good book or attend club meetings. Be interested- and you’ll always be interesting!”

Fabulous hints (and I’ll try them!) - but honestly, in the morning I’m lucky if I have one eye open and can manage to pour the coffee without spilling it.

Good Housekeeping had a plethora of household “discoveries” for the 20’s gal, such as:
  • “A Crochet Hook for the Emergency: A crochet hook is a useful adjunct to the sewing basket or to the dressing-table equipment. When the end of the drawstring or tape disappears within its casing, insert the hook and quickly draw it out”.
  • “A New Use for Sandpaper: I saw a painter put a small piece of sandpaper under each edge of a heavy frame when standing it on a narrow ledge”.

For the modern girl, use a crochet hook to fish out clothing waistband strings or pull a sweater snag inside. Or you could (*gasp*) crochet. And sandpaper can also be used to keep a mirror from slipping- fold the sandpaper in half and place under the mirrors edges.

More exciting Good Housekeeping hint titles:
  • “Ordering Ice by Pounds”. Thank goodness for the invention of ice cubes.
  • “Evening Stocking Darning”. We’re in for a wild night with this one.
  • “An Excellent Way to Utilize Scraps of Toilet Soap”. Huh?
  • “To Light the Christmas Pudding”. Personally, I’d use a blowtorch.

Kitchen tips

Being cookbooks, they also had great (and some not-so-great) hints to help out in the kitchen:

Betty Crocker’s “Hints for the Homemaker” Tips
Plan ahead:
  • “If you have a freezer, make several cakes, pies, cookies, main dishes or sandwiches at a time and freeze some for future use”.
  • “Write menus for a weeks meals at a time”.
  • “Shop for staples once a week, fresh fruits and vegetables twice weekly”.

We use all these hints, especially making and freezing in advance. Huge time saver and simplifies lunches or dinners, plus it allows you to buy in bulk, which saves a lot more money.

Vintage 1942 Grocery Receipt
Ruth Wakefields Kitchen Tips
  •  “After peeling bananas, dip in lemon juice to prevent discoloration. Peaches may be dropped into a bowl of milk to prevent darkening after peeling”.
  • “To peel tomatoes easily insert 2 tined fork into stem end of tomato- hold over lighted gas burner turning constantly, when skin bursts remove from fire and remove skin”.
  • “To peel oranges or grapefruit and free fruit entirely from the membranous or white pulp underneath skin, first place fruit in hot water for five minutes. You will then be able to peel every particle of outside from the fruit pulp”.

My son won’t get near peeled bananas if they even have a hint of brown after sitting out, plus the lemon juice adds a kick of flavor and vitamin C. Also, peeling fruits can be tedious, so I appreciate finally knowing how to do it right.

Finally, some questionable recipe hints from Good Housekeeping:
  • “Mashed Potatoes of a New Flavor” When preparing mashed potatoes, season them in the usual way with salt, pepper, and butter, then add onion juice and grated nutmeg …it is surprising how this little addition lifts this familiar dish out of the ranks of the commonplace”
    • Yes, I can imagine that it would. Do you think they sell onion juice by the quart? And can you add vodka to it?
  • “Pop-Corn and Banana Salad: When making banana salad, try substituting pop-corn in place of (nuts) that are usually used. Cut the bananas in halves lengthwise and place on lettuce leaves. Decorate with salad dressing and pop-corn. The result is very artistic and economical”.
    • Those must have been some desperate hint-makers to come up with that.
And, just in case you didn’t know how to make one, “Lettuce Sandwich” instructions:

Our last hint to leave you with today comes from the Betty Crocker, page 57:

“The thoughtful wife always has a simple beverage (cold in the summer, hot in the winter) ready for her weary husband when he comes home at night. The simplest are fruit or vegetable juices served in small fruit juice glasses”.
Does wine count as fruit juice?

Find of the Week: For all you bacon adventurers out there.
Ruth Wakefield p.248. Peanut Butter and Bacon Filling

To ½ cup peanut butter add 8 slices crisp bacon which have been crumbled. Mix well and use with moist bread or better still with crisp crackers.

Taste of Knott's - The vegetarian perspective. #KnottsNoms

One week ago I had the immense pleasure of over-indulging at Knott's Berry Farm. And let me tell you, I'm vegetarian and I had more than just funnel cake and pie.

It all started with an invitation to bring along the hubster to the Wilderness Dance Hall to sample their new menu. My ears perked up with the mention of food, but I was skeptical. I mean, if they invited me they knew I was vegetarian, right? And that I am completely transparent in my reviews. I hoped they knew what they were in for.

I've been to Knott's Berry Farm a lot in the past year and I gotta tell you, I wasn't going there for the food. Sure, their funnel cakes are to die for. Their boysenberry cake? ¡Delicioso! But aside from a few other items, food wasn't their forte... UNTIL NOW!

We walked in and this was waiting for us.

Table after table full of food. They called it a sampling, but to me it was like an all-you-can-eat buffet served in small pieces.

Before we started ravaging the tables I took a second to talk to Russ Knibbs, VP of Food and Beverage aka The Guy With All The Answers. My first issue? Vegetarian food. Why is it so hard to get something other than sweets to nibble on while I'm waiting for a ride? It appears that my question wasn't so unique because he immediately told me about their new bean burgers (picture later in the post), bruschetta and veggie wraps. He took it a step further and told me that they also have gluten-free pizza! Um, hello... awesomesauce! While I don't search for gluten-free foods on a daily basis, I'm happy to see that they have their ear to the ground and are listening to what the public wants. I let him go to get to the food, but not before we talked about the alcohol that they're serving.

Apparently, even that has gotten a makeover! They chucked their old stuff and replaced it with locally brewed beer and California wines. In fact, one of their beers (pictured above) is brewed in Anaheim! Can't get any closer than that.

Vegetarian Black Bean Burger
Black Bean Burger - Ghost Town Grill - $13.49 (w/side)
The first table that I stopped at featured their black bean burger. This burger is handmade, features fresh veggies and it was pretty darn good. I've had my share of bean burgers and this was honestly my fav. Why? Because it didn't crumble. It was moist, seasoned well and the texture wasn't grainy. I asked them to top off my little bit of burger with some of their fried jalapeños (think jalapeño chips) and that took it up a notch.

Veggie Wrap Sandwiches - Soak City - $7.99

Next up was their veggie wrap sandwiches. This wrap consists of fresh vegetables stuffed full of bell peppers, tomato, cucumber and cheese. I like it... except that I think it needs salt. Which is no big deal. I added it and it was delicious. I wouldn't recommend you buy this wrap and walk around the park with it though. Like all wraps, they'll get soggy with time and then it won't taste as good.

Bruschetta - Spurs - $7.99

Then there's the bruschetta. It's not something you would expect at a theme park, but their new menu isn't what you would expect either so I guess it fits in just fine. This bruschetta is as good as anywhere else. The tomatoes are marinated to perfection and topped with fresh parmigiano reggiano on this beautifully baked focaccia. You can find this at Spurs (across from GhostRider) where you can also find this:

Cajun Lime Salt Riblets - Spurs - $9.99

Those are Cajun Lime Salt Riblets and what I love is that it is served just as you see it. Isn't that the cutest thing ever? Don't ask me how it taste though. I have no idea.

Gluten Free Pizza - Soak City - $7.99 (individual size)

Then I walked over to the gluten-free cheese pizza. At first glance, I wouldn't be able to tell that it was gluten-free. It looked like a regular cheese pizza. As it turns out, this one is made with corn flour and then topped off with fresh mozzarella cheese. I gotta tell you though... I LOVE that they have addressed the need for gluten-free foods, but I don't think a cheese pizza can ever be improved. It's dough topped with loads of cheese. It was good and I'm sure my kids will love it. But I would rather buy the wrap.

At this point, I have basically exhausted all the new vegetarian options and I sit back and enjoy the entertainment while the hubster goes on to eat:

Chicken Pot Pie - Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner - $16.90 (full meal)
Their chicken pot pie. This one I am dying to try - just a veggie version. I've yet to have a chicken pot pie and this one looked like it was so good. The hubster put it up there along with their Hawaiian Ahi Poke and this:

Flank Steak Sandwich - Fireman's Brigade BBQ - $13.99 (w/ chips and drink)

Their flank steak sandwich. This meat was marinated for over 24 hours and then served on their homemade jalapeño and cheddar roll.

Slow Cooked Ribs - Fireman's Brigade BBQ - $11.99 (w/ garlic toast & baked potato)
They also have these slow cooked ribs which were seasoned with Knott's special rub, smoked for 11 hours and then basted with their homemade BBQ sauce. I'm telling you, Knott's is not messing around. They are bound and determined to make you eat there. And you will not be disappointed if you do.

Of course, they are also bringing in new desserts. You know you can't leave Knott's without having their funnel cake, but now you need to add their cookiewich to the list too.

Cookiewich - Chowhouse - $5.49

This cookiewich is pretty darn big. Because they bake their own chocolate chip cookies, they are able to make them bigger than store-purchased cookies. They then filled it with their creamy vanilla soft serve ice cream and roll it in chocolate chips. Russ swears that it will stay firm and not melt for at least 30 minutes. Give it a try and let me know. Mine didn't last more than 5 minutes.

Then there's the fresh fruit cups and boysenberry pie. If you've been to Knott's, then I'm sure you've had the pie. If you've been alive for more than two years then you know what a fruit cup is. I won't bore you with my thoughts on it. I will, however, show you just how delicious they look.

Knott's Boysenberry Pie - Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner - $3.95 (slice) $11.65 (whole)

Here's a fun fact about boysenberries - they can ALL trace their roots back to Knott's Berry Farm!

I was honestly bowled over by their ridiculously good food that they are putting out over there. I'm talking about fresh, locally grown foods that you would expect from restaurants. Less fast foodish, a lot more homemade.

Of course, Snoopy stopped by for a visit and kept trying to take the hubster's food. Good times.

Believe it or not. I took a lot more pictures. Want to spend a few minutes salivating? Hop on over to the Google+ album.

For more information on all Knott’s has to offer you can visit them on their website: www.knotts.com.

And of course, being the social savvy theme park that they are, they are also available on:

Facebook: Facebook.com/KnottsBerryFarm
Twitter: Twitter.com/Knotts
Instagram: @KnottsBerryFarm

I was invited by Knott's Berry Farm to partake in this sinfully delicious event and stuff myself until I felt like I was going to explode. All thoughts and opinions remain my own.

Shopping at DownEast Basics (@DownEastBasics)

I had the pleasure of shopping at DownEast Basics last week. It was a chance to discover this diamond in the rough.

The DownEast Basics that I visited is located at the Irvine Spectrum. If you're in So. Cal, then you know just how many shops there are at Irvine Spectrum and how easy it can be to get lost in the sea of clothing stores. However, I suggest you carve out some time and visit DownEast Basics next time you're in town to catch a glimpse of affordable and easy-to-wear clothing that they have to offer. How affordable? How about this:

Well-made skirts at under $25! That, my dear, is a deal. They don't carry trashy clothes. What they have is clothing that can be worn day or night, mostly single colored (but they do have patterns too) and classic. Classic clothing is awesome because it can be worn season after season making the value of the clothes even better.

If you're thinking of heading over there, I suggest you do it soon while they have their 40% off of DownEast Basics denim event going on. So you can get some of these:

Super cute jeans with sturdy embroidery on your behind. Give 'em something extra special to check out as you walk by!

DownEast Basics also carries accessories (also affordable by the way), including scarves, earrings, bracelets, handbags, belts, headbands, etc.

And if you have a daughter, it's perfect too because they have a DownEast Girl section for them to peruse! The clothing reminded me of something that Suri Holmes would wear.

I enjoyed my first shopping experience at DownEast Basics. The gals working there are super nice and helpful. In fact, they helped me decide on this:

Their Cloud Gazer Cardigan (on clearance for $9.99) and the super cute Rosemary Hair Pins ($3.99). My total came out to $15.20 and I walked out of there a happy mami. I was even happier the following day when I got to wear the cardigan on our whale watching trip.

It is very comfortable, not very heavy, can be rolled up into a little ball and stuffed in my handbag AND on top of all of that it's very universal because the ties on the sides can be undone making it a long cardigan. Of course, they can also be pulled, making it a short cardigan. It's fabulous. I also like the sleeves because they are tights to the wrist and so I can push them up and they'll stay there.

I'll definitely be back to DownEast Basics to pick up a pair of jeans. Perhaps when the hubster can take care of the kids so I can shop in peace. Or, I may just shop from home via their website, DownEastBasics.com.
