MyBlow LA made me a blowout believer | @MyBlowLA

See this picture? That's how I usually look when I don't do anything to my hair. And mind you, that's usually the case. I can work the makeup every day, but hair is just so... time consuming. I own a comb and flat iron and I'm lucky I can semi-work those two tools. When the invitation came along for a blowout from MyBlow LA, I was over-the-moon. I honestly didn't mind a drive up to their Beverly Hills location if my hair would look like one of the pictures on their website afterwards. But when I read that it was at their NEW Irvine salon? Well, to say that I was ecstatic would be an understatement.

I washed my hair that morning because I didn't want to show up with dirty hair and I wasn't quite sure what to expect at this new salon. I perused their menu while I waited for one of the gals to help me  and settled on the "Romantic Affair" blowout. Linda, my hair stylist, suggested it because she said it would last longer. So my thought was that if it lasted longer, then I could make it through the weekend with cute hair. I'll let you know how that went later on.

As soon as I walked through MyBlow LA, I was instantly in love with the sophisticated and classy look of the place. From the white cushion seating to the chandelier, it was first class all the way. And the purse hooks under each station? Incredibly thoughtful!

Linda, the fabulous hair stylist, gave me a deep conditioning treatment ($10 add-on) before taking me to her station and giving me my first blowout of my life. I sat down and looked over to my left and saw Gretty, the fantastic salon owner, sitting right next to me and getting her long, luscious hair touched up. It illustrated how involved she is in her salons because she trusted her hair to her staff.

The blowout lasted for about 30 minutes. It started with a blow dryer and ended with a curling iron. She walked through every step of the process with me and showed me each product that she used. It was super interesting to see the process, but even more exciting was the finished product.

What do you think? Fabulous, right?!?? My hair was all frizzy and a total mess. A half hour later, it looked like I put thought into my appearance and all I did was do my hair! I was sold on the blow-out process, and I owe it all to MyBlow LA and Linda D. - the extraordinary stylist.

And I wasn't the only one that enjoyed the treatment that night. Check out Liz of Thoughts of a Mommy!

I went the extra mile that night and also asked for some fake eyelashes. The make-up gal did an awesome job. They stayed on for three days!

A blowout at MyBlow LA is only $35. However, visit them Monday through Thursday from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. and you can get a beautiful blowout for only $25! They treat you like a queen from the moment you step through those doors. Want some coffee? Yup. They have that ready for you. How about some champagne? They have that too!

Interested in how it looks three (well, 2.5) days later?

The picture above is from Saturday morning (hence the "natural" makeup). The blowout happened on Thursday evening. It was so worth it!

I made the hairstyle last a bit longer by loosely tying it in a low ponytail at night and stuffing it in a bath cap when taking a shower. Nothing else was done to it.

If you're in the So. Cal area, I highly recommend stopping by MyBlow LA for a quick blowout. They have two convenient locations - one in Beverly Hills, and another in Irvine. Make an appointment here, or just walk in to one of their salons!

This is not a sponsored post. I received a complimentary blowout and lashes from MyBlow LA to facilitate my review. I also enjoyed some delicious goodies and received a swag bag. All thoughts and opinions remain my own.

Recycle your electronics at Best Buy | @BestBuy #WOLFBloggers

I don't know about you, but I have a need to upgrade my technology at least once a year. With cell phones, we do it every time our contract is up. Computers we upgrade whatever we can before actually purchasing something new. Sometimes, the hardest part of the process is letting go of the product, and I can tell you that some have made it to a drawer in the kitchen... it's the hoarder in me.

Best Buy Electronics Recycling Project

Because I'm sure that you're very much like me, I invite you to take all those old electronics and chuck them into the Best Buy bins by the entrance doors (batteries, old iPods, phones, etc.) and for bigger items, you can just take them into a Best Buy and they'll take care of the recycling - for FREE, at every Best Buy location in Puerto Rico and the U.S.! It doesn't matter how old it is, or even where you bought it. Best Buy will safely dispose of them through the Best Buy Electronics Recycling Project and it'll help the goodwill in all of us because, did you know, that technology is the fastest growing waste stream on the planet? I mean, if you think about it, how many TVs, phones, computers, printers have you gone through?

Energy Star certified products

And if after recycling your old electronics you find yourself looking at the newer models, check out Best Buy and their line of Energy Star certified products.

I've used the bins by the entrance doors before for batteries and gift cards (yes, they take those too!), have you had the opportunity to toss something in there before? What was it?

This is a compensated post. I received a Best Buy Gift Card and/or received the product/service at a reduced price or for free. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

AQUABATS! SUPER SHOW! SEASON ONE! - on DVD 5/21/13!!

I know very few kid bands. The Aquabats, however, I've heard of for years now thanks to watching them on Yo Gabba Gabba. We've even seen them in concert! Well, we saw them perform one or two songs at the Yo Gabba Gabba concert. Anyhow, my kid thought they were cool and he loved seeing the drummer go crazy on stage. As much (or as little) as I know about them, I must be living under a rock because I didn't know they had their own show! So I'll have to wait until May 21st when they release their first DVD to see the full season.

This 2-disc deluxe collection will include all 13 Season One episodes of wacky crime-fighting, music videos and outlandish villains, along with a ton of bonus features. Special guests on the show include “Weird Al” Yankovic, Lou Diamond Phillips (Southland), Samm Levine (Freaks & Geeks), Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) and more.

Aquabats! Super Show! Season One! is available for pre-order now on Amazon.com at a reduced rate of $14.99 (MSRP $19.93)

As I've mentioned before, I love holiday-themed movies and show episodes. Because my kids watch TV, I feel like it really ties in all the deco and activities that they're involved in during the holidays.

This year, Curious George is releasing a Spring-themed DVD and so far, my kids are enjoying it (especially my youngest one pictured above). My littlest one is 19 months old, and I definitely think Curious George is at the top of the list as far as favorite characters. I think it's the fact that George doesn't talk, but he can still communicate with others. Or maybe it's all the jumping around. Either way, George intrigues him and I love that.

Total run time is 57 minutes and it is set to be released on March 12, 2013. Perfect addition to your growing DVD collection! Perhaps for the Easter basket?

Curious George Swings into Springs is available for pre-order at Amazon.com for $14.99 (MSRP $19.98).

About Curious George Swings Into Springs

Spring has sprung and the world’s favorite monkey returns — as curious as ever — in this high-flying, full-length feature.

George and his best friend, Hundley, explore all the wonders of the season together— including blooming flowers, baby animals and canoe rides. But when Hundley loses his way, George takes to the skies to find his pal, in a wild adventure that ends with a very fun surprise!

How to Make Mango Salsa | @BoxOfMangoes #ILoveMangoes

pattie cordova living mi vida loca

I'm sure I've mentioned before that I'm not much of a cook. However, there are a few things that I've mastered along the way and one of those things are salsa.

pattie cordova living mi vida loca

Making mango salsa takes about 10 minutes and it's instant satisfaction with lots of benefits. Mangoes are a great addition to the typical "pico de gallo" salsa because they are loaded with nutritional benefits. According to ILoveMangoes.com:
  • One cup of mangos is just 100 calories, so it’s a sweet treat that won’t weigh you down.
  • One serving of mangos provides 100% of your daily vitamin C and 35% of your vitamin A, both important antioxidant nutrients. Vitamin C promotes healthy immune function and collagen formation. Vitamin A is important for vision and bone growth.
  • Mangos provide 12% of your daily dietary fiber. Diets low in fat and high in fiber-containing grain products, fruits and vegetables may be associated with a reduced risk of some types of cancer.
  • Mangos contain over 20 different vitamins and minerals.
  • Each serving of mango is fat free, sodium free and cholesterol free.
  • Mangos scored 93 out of 100 on the recently introduced NuVal scoring system for overall nutritional quality.
So as you can see, you really can't go wrong with mangoes.

Mango Salsa Recipe

Ingredients
1 Mango
1 Jalapeño
1 Tomato
2 tbsp. Onion
2 tbsp. Cilantro
Lemon and salt to taste

Preparation
1. Chop mango, jalapeño and tomato
2. Add onion and cilantro
3. Mix
4. Add lemon and salt to taste. Store in refrigerator for one hour prior to serving for best flavor.

This is not a sponsored post. I received a box of mangoes to facilitate the recipe. All thoughts and opinions remain my own.

I had the opportunity to attend P!NK's "The Truth About Love" Tour earlier this month. I was floored by her honesty and performance.

This was my first time attending a concert of hers and I can say that I would LOVE to go back and see her. I would totally be one of her groupies and follow her everywhere. She is so down to earth, loving, funny and she just gave us a great performance. She poured herself on stage for everyone, really gave it everything she had and even a few encore performances.

Slater's 50/50 - Now open in Lake Forest | @slaters5050 #VegetarianLatina

The newest Slater's 50/50 opened earlier this month in the beautiful city of Lake Forest.

If you haven't heard of Slater's 50/50, the 50/50 represents the 50% ground beef/50% ground bacon burgers specialized at their restaurants. With names like "Peanut Butter and Jellousy" and Fritos® Crunch Burger" it has So. Cal. residents clamoring to score a seat for lunch or dinner at any of its 5 locations.

slater's 50/50

Being a vegetarian, I was very skeptical as to the type of food that I would consume at a place that is known for bacon and beef. First up, were the appetizers - Slater's Vampire Dip and Beer Cheese Fries (chili on the side).

slater's 50/50 review
slater's 50/50 review

The Slater's Vampire Dip comes served in a bread bowl with deep fried pita chips. The dip was super creamy, just a tad over-salted and extremely filling. It also tasted much better with the bread than the pita chips. One can really taste the garlic and cheese in the dip, but the artichoke - not so much.

The Beer Cheese Fries traditionally come topped with chili as they are served out of the kitchen. However, in the interest of keeping it vegetarian, we asked for the chili on the side and the hubster consumed it separately. I am a big jalapeño eater and I would have loved to have had about 20 more jalapeños sitting on top of the fries instead of just six. The beer taste was not overwhelming and I could taste it with every bite of my fries.

slater's 50/50 review

My main entree consisted of the "Eat Your Veggies Burger." Chock full of veggies, this burger was as big as any other burger served and filled with alfalfa sprouts, avocado mash, cucumber slices and garlic aioli on a honey wheat bun. The veggie patty - about an inch thick - is deep fried to enhance the flavor and tasted a bit like an egg roll, as opposed to a traditional "fake meat" patty. It was quite tasty and after half of the burger, I hardly had room for desert!

slater's 50/50 review

I was hesitant about ordering the Cococarma as our desert choice because of the description: A toasted coconut, caramel and chocolate cookie baked in a cast iron skillet, served à la mode. The description alone gave the impression of something overtly sweet and chocolatey - neither of which I am a fan of. However, it turned out to be my favorite dish of the evening. The coconut offset the sweetness in the chocolate and the vanilla ice cream toned down the flavor in the entire dish. A portion of the toppings were crystalized which led to the crispiness that one had in every bite. I am a major fan of this desert. And one desert can easily feed two.

I look forward to going back to Slater's 50/50 - and perhaps trying out some different menu items, and most definitely, the homemade bread pudding! It is a few inches thick and looked absolutely divine.

Potty training a boy - Round 2 | @PullUpsBigKid #EveryFlush

$
0
0

It's just about that time again... potty training time. A time when all across the country, mamis are doing double-duty on laundry and floor washing, all while trying to convince the kid that it really is better to use the toilet than the diaper.

As a mom participating in Pull-Ups' Madrinas del Baño campaign, I get to share my trials and tribulations of this "wonderful" stage. But at least this time, I get to have Pull-Ups motivating moms like me to stick with potty training AND I can take advantage of the FREE Pull-Ups Big Kid App.

So far, my 19 month old has got the whole "poop in the toilet" down. He's had this issue with going "number 2" in his diaper for a very long time now, so using the toilet is great. I just stick the kiddie toilet seat on the big one and we're good to go. Sometimes, especially if he's taking a very, very long time, I'll place the iPad on the bathroom counter so he can entertain himself that way while he goes.

pull ups big kid

Then I see products where they basically take my brilliant idea of using the iPad as an incentive and strap it onto a potty and it has me wondering if it would make my life easier. I'm seriously tempted to get it, but the idea of having to clean the little potty is almost too much for me.

Honestly, teaching a kid to use the toilet is extremely tiring, and there is a lot of waiting. Plus, how can you tell your kid that it's actually better to use the toilet to do their business, rather than the portable "toilet" that they have strapped on to them? You can't!

I am going through this potty training process a second time and I'm having a hard time not comparing him to my first. My first kid was potty trained by 2 years and 3 months. A lot of the timing with my first one had to do with the belief that children should be trained by the time they are two years old. However, experts say you shouldn’t start training your little one until you see that they are ready. But my baby has me really confused since he only pees in the diaper.

This time around, I'm happy that I have a lot of resources at my disposal, especially the Pull-Ups Big Kid app. This useful app has a host of great features including games, phone calls from their favorite Disney characters, a potty timer and a other great features. I hope my kid is ready to get this potty training on the road... because it's game on!

Tips & info on choosing quality child care | @ReadySetGrowLA #QualityECE

$

The first five years are the most important years in a kid's life. You've heard this before, right? Research shows that children who receive quality child care show more advanced language skills, do better in school, have fewer behavioral problems, and develop better social skills. Ultimately, they are more likely to graduate from high school and succeed in their academic careers. As parents, we ALL want this. So how can we ensure that the first five years of your child's life are under adequate care?

If being a stay-at-home parent is not something that is feasible for you (or you simply don't want to), then it's uber-important to fill yourself up with knowledge about what to look for in a caretaker. To help parents who need to find someone to watch after their child during these early development years, First 5 LA has launched “Quality Child Care Lasts a Lifetime,” a campaign aimed at informing parents about the life-long benefits of quality early care and education and tips to help them make informed decisions. ReadySetGrowLA.org is a great resource for you because the website is full of tips, references and events. For example, they give five steps in choosing quality child care (listed below) along with links and lists that you can use when you're ready.

  1. Assess needs and child care options.
  2. Check credentials, license and caregiving training.
  3. Get to know the child care provider by scheduling a site visit.
  4. Make a commitment.
  5. Stay involved in your child's care and education.

Totally Thrifty Tuesdays in Orange County

Guest post by Justine Burgess

As the mom of a preschooler desperately searching for fun things to do on the cheap, one of my favorite days of the week is Tuesday. Not just because it’s not Monday (or because it’s Taco Tuesday at El Torito); I love my Tuesdays for the mom friends I have and what we do with our kids that day, together. We have coffee and chat, yes; but more importantly we get to spend quality time with our kids and each other. Our usual meeting place? South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. I know, I know, how can that be thrifty, right? Well, here’s how it worked for my son and I this week.

We started the day at Corner Bakery. If you sign up for emails from them, you will periodically receive special offers and coupons. I had a coupon for a free birthday sweet (no purchase necessary), so we redeemed it for a cranberry orange baby bundt. Awesome (and tasty!) free way to start the morning. We then walked down to Pottery Barn Kids.

pottery barn book club and legos

Pottery Barn Kids at South Coast Plaza has story time every Tuesday at 11am. It’s fun, it’s totally free, and every child gets a “book club” passport- for each story time they attend, they receive one stamp in the book. Once five stamps are accrued, the booklet can be redeemed toward $10 in merchandise from the Pottery Barn Kids store. It’s an awesome deal. Junior found a front row seat on the rug right in front of Ms. M, a former preschool teacher who works at Pottery Barn Kids. The kids love her, and she keeps them occupied through several stories, songs, and mini-celebrations of birthdays and holidays. It’s thirty minutes of education, friendship, and fun. When story time ended, we got our stamp and realized we had filled up the book. My son literally jumped for joy (luckily not smashing his teeth on the table) as he grabbed two Lego Creator sets ($5.99 each) and plunked them on the counter. After redeeming our Book Club booklet for the $10 off, our grand total was $2.14.

free samples

After Pottery Barn, we headed to Sephora to try out some makeup. The rep there was very helpful and loaded me up with samples. Kiehl's and Fresh were other stops for the day and again, I came away with a ton of product samples. We then headed to Godiva to redeem our Godiva Reward for the month (sign up for the Rewards programs, and you get a FREE piece of Godiva chocolate every month, plus other benefits). They also had samples, so we even got a little more than we expected. Williams-Sonoma was our next venture, where (yay!) they had samples of jellybeans and gumdrops on sale for Easter. Stopping at the Sony store, my son sat and played some PS3 games for a bit, then went to the Microsoft store and did the same thing on an Xbox. Afterwards, we made some wishes at a fountain, danced to the music at Abercrombie (thank goodness for patient sales reps), rode the carousel with a free coupon (regular price $1), and checked out the tropical fish tanks and animatronic creatures at the Rainforest Café. We left South Coast after a very full day, having spent only $2.14. Pretty thrifty for an expensive mall.

Now for the kicker- IKEA is on our way home, and every Tuesday they offer FREE kids meals (for kids under 12) after 11a.m. at the IKEA restaurant. You do not have to buy anything else. Three choices of kids combo meals (normally $2.99 each) are available. So, because Junior was hungry (and I’m not averse to free food) we stopped. The restaurant is near the kids section, so we browsed (and played) for a bit, then headed to the restaurant. My son had chicken fingers with fries and milk, but they also offer mac and cheese with veggies, or meatballs and mashed potatoes, and the kids can choose from among a few beverages. But wait- there’s more! I have the IKEA Family Card (you can sign up in store- it gets you discounts and special offers) so I get FREE coffee at the restaurant every visit, any day. And their coffee is de-li-cious- I had two cups. We then went down to the exit bistro/café near the registers and got 2 soft-serve frozen yogurts for $1 each, bringing our food consumed at IKEA to a total of $2. After making note of a “big boy” bed that Junior wanted, we headed out to go home. We were planning to stop by Centennial Farms in Costa Mesa (it’s FREE) to make our thrifty day even more fabulous, but my little man was tired so we saved it for another day.

Grand total of our Totally Thrifty Tuesday out? $4.14 plus gas. We spent the whole day together, had fun, learned a lot, got things (or planned for things) we could use, and it hardly cost anything. That’s what I call a successful day. Cheers to the thrifty fun days in YOUR future!

Easy Kids Meal Idea: Brown Rice & Vegetarian Chili | @Minute_Rice #LoveEveryMinute

I am not much of a cook. But then again, I'm also not a fan of convenience foods or eating out too much, so the kids are usually stuck with boring dinners. Every once in a while though, I'll do something fun (and easy) for them, like this brown rice and chili dish using Minute Ready to Serve Rice.

rice and chili

You need TWO ingredients. That's it. Of course, you can always pretty it up a bit more with sour cream, veggies (maybe broccoli?) and toppings like that. I was thinking of adding diced tomatoes and onion to our dinner, but the baby got ahold of the bowl before I could add anything to it.

chili and rice

I find Minute Ready to Serve rice super easy to use. You peel off the film, pop it in the microwave for 60 seconds and it's done! One can easily mix in some veggie sausage and make it a little more exotic. The hubster likes to take them to work with him and basically recreate the easy "recipe" above for lunch.

And just in case you're wondering, the rice doesn't get mushy, or watery. The consistency is very al dente and comes out of the microwave ready to eat. Of course, I always recommend you getting the whole grain brown rice variety, just to make things a bit healthier. Each container gives you 4 grams of fiber - and it's only 230 calories! It's very weight-loss friendly.

Rice is such a wonderful base to begin your culinary adventure and I like that Minute Ready to Serve Rice has a host of serving suggestions printed inside the carton. I'm thinking of venturing out into the more exotic flavors like Italian Rice Mix to serve with some garlic bread and soy chicken.

Have you tried the Minute Ready to Serve product line yet? Which one was your favorite?
Minute® Ready to Serve Rice is an ideal portable solution for lunch or breakfast because you can eat it on the go, straight from the cup. In just 60 seconds, you have fully cooked rice for any meal or snack. You’ll never get bored with your lunch since there are 10 flavorful and wholesome varieties. If you’re looking for a healthy option, Minute® Ready to Serve Rice provides easy portion control since it’s conveniently packaged in two individual single-serve cups.

I'm seeing women everywhere do great thing and represent themselves in a wonderful way that I'm thinking we need to start bringing back the term "Girl Power"... who's with me? Let's start with the awesome Gwyneth Paltrow. She may not be doing heavy-duty life-changing stuff, but she is doing what she's good at and representing the female population in a positive manner. So, Gwyneth, you have my first #GirlPower post.
