Angry Birds 4th Birthday Party - Part 4 of 4

Decorations

My favorite part of the party was the Angry Birds birthday banner. I made it using my Cricut (though it could easily be done without it). I started by installing the Angry Birds font found here. Then I printed out the letters, glued them to ovals I cut and then strung them onto yarn. The huge Angry Birds on the end are stickers that I glued to black cardstock.

Seeing as how there are ZERO Angry Birds party supplies, I went out and made my own by purchasing solid-colored cups (at the 99 cent store) and adding Angry Birds stickers I purchased at the swap meet ($1 for 6 sheets). Easy-peasy.

I would have gone a little crazier decorating outside but it ended up being uber-windy (darn the Santa Ana winds)! The decorations that were up I ended up tearing down before the party ended because they were getting in everybody's faces.

I also added Angry Birds stickers to the solid-colored tablecloths.
Games

You can't have a party without games! We had three in which the prizes were Angry Birds gummies (purchased at Justice for a little over $3 each).

First up was "Hot Angry Birds" - played like hot potato only to the Angry Birds tune and with the red Angry Bird instead.

Next was the Angry Birds Toss Game. This one was fun because it also got the adults involved. We set it up at a table and then had the kids toss the small Angry Birds and see who got the highest score.

Lastly, we played Angry Birds via the Roku 2 on our television. It plays similar to playing on a Wii so it was easy enough for both kids and adults to play. Everyone took turns and the highest score won. I highly recommend getting the Roku 2... not just to play Angry Birds, but because it can save you tons on your cable bill because you can stream television shows, novelas, movies and music.

Getting organized with products from Westminster Mall #ShopWestminster

I have a few resolutions, but #1 on my list is getting organized. I started on this resolution the week before January 1st because in this vida loca of mine, getting organized is the only way to stay sane.

I used to be a pretty organized person before the kids came along. Now, I have to make a conscious effort to stay neat, tidy and have everything in its place. When the good folks from Simon Malls approached me about doing a post on organization - well, let's just say I was all over it because just a few weeks into the new year and I'm already running on fumes.

So I took a little trip to Westminster Mall and walked around for hours (literally) before finally settling on a few products that have made a big difference in my home and my life.

Following are a few pictures of what I've been doing around the house with these products.

The Refrigerator

Products: Food storage organizers purchased at Babies 'R Us (under $11).

We have a big fridge. Food is easily lost in there, which usually ends up costing us money because we end up throwing away so much of it. I went the extra mile here and after organizing the foods into categories (beverages, coffees, baby food, spreads, condiments, "meats", cheese and yogurts, eggs, toppings, leftovers), I labeled them using my Dymo label maker. This ensures that I consistently take the time to put food away where it belongs and allows for the Hubster to find food easily too.

Products: Triple Set - Chopsticks, Fork, Spoon ($2.99) and 60ml Hello Kitty container ($2.69)
Now that the baby is at the 7 month mark I'm ready to start distancing myself from my JJ Cole Swag diaper bag (which I completely adore but can get pretty heavy). However, there are two things that absolutely need to go with me wherever I go - besides my phone and diapers that is - and that's the hand sanitizer and the baby's feeding utensils. I purchased these two items at Tokyo Japanese Lifestyle (my new favorite store at Westminster Mall).

I tackled my disastrous cabinets with a vengeance and organized it as best I could given the limited amount of space. I honestly wish I had taken before pictures because I can assure you - it was a complete mess.

I decided to use materials that I had in our home to help with this pantry by cutting up cereal boxes and using them to organize mixes and all those spices that come in those cello bags.

Top shelf - baking products
Middle shelf - treats and hot beverage mixes
Lower shelf - oils and spices
Door - spice organizer via school fundraiser
Top shelf - Crackers and Sterilite dry goods containers (16 cups) from Target ($5.99) for cereal
Middle shelf - Re Organize helper shelf ($3.99) from Target holds pasta and snacks. Bread and rice underneath. Soups and broths on the side.
Bottom shelf - mixes, pasta sauce, peanut butters, jars on 3 tier shelf ($.99) and vitamins
Every room in my home could do with some organizing... including my restroom. How happy was I when I found just the thing that would do this! This uber-cute Hello Kitty toilet paper cover was purchased at Tokyo Japanese Lifestyle and it has a place to stash an extra toilet paper roll. I am especially in love with this product because the Hubster now has zero reason for not replacing the roll.

Hello Kitty Toilet Paper Cover ($4.99) from Tokyo Japanese Lifestyle
When I purchased the toilet paper cover I noticed that it said, "For Sale in Japan Only". I couldn't figure out why it would say this until I got home... turns out you need a special type of toilet paper holder for the cover to be displayed as it was intended. It was way too cute to return so I just wrapped the band around the entire holder.

By the way, the light in the room makes everything look yellow, but it's actually a light beige.

Room Essentials 9-Pair Shoe Rack ($3.49) from Target
And finally, this shoe rack (which I originally purchased to go in the closet) now sits by our front door. Though I had thoughts of putting a large basket there for shoes, I find that this fits our needs much better because it keeps the shoes from getting dirty, squished and mistreated. I'm thinking of painting it black.

My organizational shopping trip also gave me a dry-erase board which is hung in our kitchen and lets us know at a glance our to-do list. I also purchased these little plastic boxes for my son's underwear and sock drawer. He loves to have things in their place and the boxes make it much easier to keep them separated.

This week we're working on my son's room and getting all of his toys organized while simultaneously creating more room and hacking an IKEA toddler bed and making it a trundle bed that will go underneath the baby's crib. Busy, busy, busy...

So while I'm on this organization trip, I invite you to come with me and we'll keep ourselves motivated to stay organized the entire year. I've started a couple of boards on Pinterest which I'm constantly adding ideas to. If you have any cheap, easy and effective organizing ideas, I would love to hear them!

I am a Simon Mall Correspondent. I received a gift card from Westminster Mall to facilitate my shopping. This post do not necessarily represent Simon Property Group's positions, strategies or opinions.

I'll take a scary movie over any other genre any day. There's just something about getting spooked that gets my blood pumping. This weekend, my mom was over for the night so we set up shop and watched Paranormal Activity 1 and 3. We finished Paranormal Activity 2 the following morning. Though I've watched all of them before, they were still just as creepy as though I had watched them for the first time. So if you're out and about today, make sure to grab your copy of Paranormal Activity 3 as it makes it out onto the shelves TODAY!

By the way, we watched Paranormal Activity 3 on Blu-ray with the Spanish audio on. It's a great way to practice your Spanish! Also, Paranormal Activity 1 and 2 are available for streaming via Netflix ($7.99/month)

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack
Arriving on January 24th, the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 Blu-ray/DVD combo pack includes both the theatrical version of the film and an unrated version with footage not seen in theaters, as well as Lost Tapes that reveal more footage not seen in the film. In addition, all Blu-ray and DVD releases available for purchase will be enabled with UltraViolet, a new way to collect, access and enjoy movies. With UltraViolet, consumers can easily add movies to their digital collection in the cloud, and then stream or download them – safely and securely – to a variety of devices.

And, in a first, all three films in the franchise will be available for Digital Download prior to the Blu-ray/DVD debut. This unique experience, called Paranormal Activity: The Chronology, presents the films in chronological order as a seamless marathon.

The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack breakdown is as follows:
Blu-ray:
  • Original Theatrical Version of the Film
  • Unrated Version of the Film
  • Lost Tapes
DVD:
  • Unrated Version of the Film
  • Digital Copy of Unrated Version—Compatible with iTunes® and Windows Media

A trilogy DVD set will also be available on January 24th exclusively at Walmart, which includes the theatrical and unrated versions of all three films plus all previously released bonus material.

In case you forgot what Paranormal Activity 3 was about, or if you haven't watched it, here's a trailer:

Love Letter Challenge hosted by Grammarly

I was given a challenge by Grammarly to write a love letter to my husband. I say challenge because it's nearly impossible for me to write down how I feel about him and not go on and on. I did my best and then I checked the grammar using the Grammarly site. It found 17 mistakes. Holy smokes! I didn't realize that my writing needed that much work.

Original Letter
I sit here writing this letter to you, my beloved and adoring husband, after the kids have gone to bed, after the dishes have been washed and after you have retired for the night. It is now that I can take a moment to breathe and truly think about how grateful and lucky I am to have you as a supportive husband and partner. It is because of your hard work, thoughtfulness and overall dedication, that I have the opportunity to be a stay-at-home mom. It is something that I have always wanted to do and which I can now enjoy simply because I married a man who was willing to do everything and anything to ensure that our family has everything that we need and want.

From the moment that I first saw you almost fourteen years ago, you have seen to it that I am always happy. You have been there when I needed you the most – when my father passed away, when I felt like graduation day was never going to come, and when I gave birth to our two sons. Your unwavering support and love has been the pillar that I have come to rely on. I look forward with anticipation to you walking through our door and seeing your handsome face. The kids and I eagerly wait for you to return so that we can share with you our day and hear about yours. This ritual may seem redundant to some, but to me it means stability.

You, Alexander, are my life. I love you with all my heart and soul and though I will never truly find the words to let you know how much you mean to me, I hope that you know just how much you complete me.

Build-A-Bear Workshop makes #FriendsCount

In 2012, Build-A-Bear Workshop will celebrate two major milestones. The first milestone is their 15th birthday! Since the company opened its doors in St. Louis Galleria on October 27, 1997 it has grown to become a global brand while being recognized as a company with heart. The second milestone is the celebration of selling their 100 millionth furry friend. Sounds like 2012 will be a great year for Build-A-Bear Workshop!

In celebration of their milestones, Build-A-Bear Workshop has asked me to share a story on a friend that counts. For me, that's my friend Justine. I've known her since our kids were a year and a half. Now that they're four, we've had lots of fun and lots of craziness watching them grow up. We've had each other to talk to when it got to be out of control, when we reached milestones like getting them potty trained and best of all, we've discovered new places and enjoyed all kinds of fun events together. It's really great to have another mom to share the ups and downs of motherhood and I'm grateful to my friend for that.

By publishing this post, I was entered to win a gift card as part of a promotional offer from MomSelect and Build-A-Bear Workshop. All opinions are my own.

OC Event - "Twogether is Better" at Knott's Berry Farm #LoveKnotts

Knott's Berry Farm has a fabulous theme going on this month - "Twogether is Better." They have an assortment of deals and special events going on. We were invited to partake these specialties last Saturday and we had a BLAST!

First up, we had a delicious breakfast at Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant. It was my first time eating there and boy, was it delicious. They served all kinds of cute little heart-shaped foods like pancakes and egg sandwiches, but my favorites were the pastries.

We were served mini-versions of the goodies that they sell on-site. All the pastries tasted homemade (I admit, I had more than one two!)

After breakfast, we walked into Camp Snoopy for the new “Love Is In the Air, Charlie Brown!” The gang did their own renditions of popular love songs. My fav was "You're the One that I Want." I'm a big Grease fan and that song and dance really hit the spot.

We walked around the park afterwards and enjoyed all the special events like the Chocolate Dipping Station in Ghost Town and the Cupid’s Craft Corner - where children 11 and under can create special tokens for the ones they love.

Roma Downey's Little Angels DVD Pre-Release Party (part 1 of 2) #LittleAngels

I have a four year old boy who chooses what he wants to watch via our Netflix app on the iPad (where he watches most of his shows). He's done pretty good so far, doesn't choose anything inappropriate but unfortunately, he really doesn't choose anything with substance either (think Phineas & Ferb). This is why I was really excited to hear about Roma Downey's Little Angels.
From executive producer Roma Downey, who many will recognize from the hit show "Touched by an Angel", Little Angels will provide your family with real practical skills such as learning their ABC's and 123's. It also will teach them core family values, such as the importance of being kind and sharing, of being truthful and honest and of showing gratitude and love. The angels also offer your kids a glimpse into the world of the Bible by whisking Zoe and Alex (pre-school twins) back in time to some favorite Biblical stories. Along the way we meet Noah, Jonah, and Joshua, and of course, we witness Jesus teaching and healing.

I will get the opportunity to pre-screen these DVDs with my kid and 9 others at a pre-screening party. We'll be hosting all these little munchkins and serving up some kid-friendly foods like movie-style popcorn, hot dogs, juice and a couple of other snacks. I'll also be giving trivia questions in between movies just to make sure they're paying attention. I was provided angel wings and crafts from Little Angels and I can already tell that this is going to be a GREAT party.

After-party post will be coming soon because we are hosting the party this Friday! Meanwhile, if you want to learn more about Little Angels, visit their website, download their app via iTunes or watch the trailer below. I'm sure you'll get hooked on it like I hope my son does.

Chatting with Bridgit Mendler #Arrietty

I had the opportunity to attend a junket where I met with the talented Bridgit Mendler. We were a small group of about 10 moms and our daughters/nieces. We discussed Bridgit's newest movie, The Secret World of Arrietty, her burgeoning career and what's it like to be an up-and-coming star. Here's some of the questions that we asked, and what she had to say.

Q : What was your favorite part of playing Arrietty?
BRIDGIT MENDLER : I think she’s a fun character. I think she’s pretty spunky, she’s pretty cool. I like that she has her heart in the right place. So, [it] felt like she was giving some good messages.

Q : Can you relate to her?
BRIDGIT MENDLER : I think I was pretty adventurous when I was younger. And I liked exploring outside and I was- I was into climbing trees and rocks and all that stuff.

Q : Being famous, is it harder to go places like shopping?
BRIDGIT MENDLER : I do have trouble with that sometimes. And, and so sometimes I try and wear a hat or sunglasses and a lot of times people are respectful. But sometimes they get really excited and you can’t blame them for like wanting to say hi. And I'm so happy to meet the fans of the show. And it's really flattering. But, I'm not always looking my finest

Q : Do you ever miss not being famous, being able to go out without paparazzi?
BRIDGIT MENDLER : I haven’t had to worry about paparazzi. I don't consider myself quite famous. I think I'm like a kind of a familiar face. But they really don't give me too hard of a time with it. I do think it would sometimes be easier if I didn't have to worry about hiding, because I can definitely tell when somebody notices me and I kind of like start to try to hide a little bit.

Q : What was the funnest part of the process?
BRIDGIT MENDLER : I think it was fun because I kind of got into this story. As I was recording, I really felt like I was, in the movie. I was in the story. And each time I went, I felt like I was just watching a movie, so it was always really fun to do.

Q : During the adventure scene, were you ad-libbing?
BRIDGIT MENDLER : Well they wanted us to adlib for that part. So, for that part I kind of just had to watch the scene and then just try and go for it.

Q : What was the hardest part?
BRIDGIT MENDLER : Those adlib bits where I have to make a grunt or a heavy breathing at some point. And [LAUGHTER] you just have to pick the moments do it a little bit more exaggerated than what you’d actually do, because if you think about it, if you're actually doing that, you might make some noises. But not as much as they kind of need to hear when you're in an animated movie. It's a challenging thing [LAUGHS] because you're not actually doing the motions.

Q : What would you tell girls, a suggestion related to pursuing careers?
BRIDGIT MENDLER : I think a great thing about Arrietty is she has a really pure curiosity for the world? She just wants to see things and she wants to meet people. But she has really great intentions, and she meets this boy, Shawn, who is kind of having a rough time. And she’s able to be a really good friend for him. And so I think it's a great message of friendship and adventure. And I think it's good. I think all girls should feel empowered like they can go out and conquer the world. I think it's important.

Q : When you were younger, what other careers did you want?
BRIDGIT MENDLER : You know, I was a kid who wanted to do everything. I wanted to be a chef, a gymnast, the President, a lawyer, I wanted to be everything. So through my job, I can do a lot of different things.

Q : What other projects are you working on?
BRIDGIT MENDLER : I'm working on Good Luck Charlie and I'm working on the album right now. And those are my two main projects at the moment.

Q : Are you steering yourself towards being a musician or an actress?
BRIDGIT MENDLER : I feel like I really want to devote enough time to both of them. But I, I haven’t really had time to get music off its feet so well. So I'm kind of hoping to focus more on that this year, just with the upcoming release.

About The Secret World of Arrietty

Residing quietly beneath the floorboards are little people who live undetected in a secret world to be discovered, where the smallest may stand tallest of all. From the legendary Studio Ghibli ("Spirited Away," "Ponyo") comes "The Secret World of Arrietty," an animated adventure based on Mary Norton's acclaimed children's book series "The Borrowers."

Arrietty (voice of Bridgit Mendler), a tiny but tenacious 14-year-old, lives with her parents (voices of Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) in the recesses of a suburban garden home, unbeknownst to the homeowner and her housekeeper (voice of Carol Burnett). Like all little people, Arrietty (AIR-ee-ett-ee) remains hidden from view, except during occasional covert ventures beyond the floorboards to "borrow" scrap supplies like sugar cubes from her human hosts. But when 12-year-old Shawn (voice of David Henrie), a human boy who comes to stay in the home, discovers his mysterious housemate one evening, a secret friendship blossoms. If discovered, their relationship could drive Arrietty's family from the home and straight into danger. The English language version of "The Secret World of Arrietty" was executive produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, and directed by Gary Rydstrom. The film hits theaters Feb. 17, 2012.

Disclosure: I received no compensation for this post. I was invited to attend a press junket for the film as a member of the media. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Use Bertolli's Meal Soups for a fabulous Vday dinner #BertolliMealSoup

Sometimes it gets a little crazy trying to get the entire family to the table at the same time. I have a four year old and an 8 month old, but I also have a husband who is going to school and the oldest boy has karate class just about every day of the week. It is hectic trying to get a healthy meal on the table and I'm sure most of you deal with this same issue week after week. Enter... Bertolli's Meal Soups!

Bertolli Meal Soups

Bertolli has created soups that are hearty and fresh-tasting with vegetables, meats, pasta and herbs individually flash frozen at the  peak of freshness. They're available in the freezer aisle making them ready to enjoy at home in minutes. All you have to do is mix the frozen soup with one cup of water and heat it up (over the stove top is suggested).

With robust flavors and rich textures, new Bertolli Frozen Meal Soups are available in four varieties: Chicken Minestrone, Roasted Chicken & Rotini Pasta, Tomato Florentine & Tortellini with Chicken, and Tuscan-Style Beef with Vegetables.

I was given the opportunity to try out one of these new Bertolli Meal Soups... unfortunately, we are vegetarian and Bertolli does not offer a vegetarian option. So what we did instead is offer the soups to our mothers as part of their Valentine's Day gift! It was a super idea.

We coupled the soup with some freshly-baked Italian bread (per the suggestion on the Bertolli Meal Soup package), Martinelli's Sparkling Cider and Ferrero Rocher chocolates. We heated up the soup and included special touches like napkin-wrapped spoons with cute little felt flower stickers. An I Love You balloon let them know that we would be thinking of them on Valentine's Day. Add some candles, lively Italian music and some fresh flowers and it's "Italy, served!" It was a truly affordable meal and could very easily be prepared in under one hour.

Roasted Chicken and Rotini Pasta
p.s. I purchased the soup at my local Albertson's. They were on sale for $7.49 (down from $8.99).

Now in its fourth year, the Wells Fargo-sponsored Discover the Arts program offers discounts of up to 50% off on admissions, gift store items and more at 50 cultural institutions across Los Angeles. The City's longest and largest arts campaign is to make the arts accessible to all. You can go here to read more about the museums that are participating.

I was invited to partake in the festivities last week and I had such a blast. We started the day with a press conference featuring Mayor Villaraigosa, a giant puppet from the National History Museum and Ozomatli.

We then took a tour of some local museums located around Placita Olvera. It was my first time there and I was instantly enamored by the culture and vibe of the streets.

For those of you not familiar with Plaza Olvera, it's located at North Main St. and West Cesar E Chavez Ave. in Los Angeles. Known as the birthplace of the City of Los Angeles (in 1781), it's resembles a Mexican-style plaza filled with many shops who offer authentic Mexican souvenirs. It has huge paid parking lots across the street from it and it's located about one block from Chinatown. It's also right across the street from Union Station and with bus stops all around the placita, it's a high-traffic kind of a place.

Local museum guides gave us a great personalized tours and I came to find out that they offer these services for FREE! If you get a chance to go down to Plaza Olvera, I highly recommend that you take advantage of this service. You'll appreciate the plaza and its history a lot more.

We stopped by the Pico House for refreshments (provided by El Paseo Inn). A couple of delicious Jamaicas later we were given the history of the place. I learned that the Pico House was the first three story building constructed in Los Angeles. The inside is BEAUTIFUL. It really takes you back in time and I couldn't help but think how many people had passed through there (well actually, I was wondering if there were any "spirits" in the place).

Pico House - Copyright © Kathleen Fry
We walked across the street to the Chinese American Museum where we learned more about their new exhibit: Breaking Ground: Chinese American Architects in Los Angeles (1945-1980).

We then took a short stroll to the first firehouse constructed in Los Angeles. It was built in 1884 and served as a firehouse until 1997. It is here that I saw the oldest fire engine... so old that it has the reins where it was pulled once by horses!

We finished off our tour with a scrumptious lunch at El Paseo Inn. It's located in the Plaza Olvera - where it was also once a winery. Greeted by a group of musicians, we found a place to sit in the back of the restaurant and munched on delicious tapas and more of their aguas frescas.

We walked through another historic landmark and ended our day at Cafe de Camacho. I had my first taste of Cafe de Olla which is black coffee with a touch of piloncillo (Mexican unrefined brown sugar). Sooo good. I also had this mocha-type coffee with a shot of espresso. I'm a humungous coffee lover and their coffee was so tasty that I was honestly felt like I was in coffee heaven. It was a perfect ending to a great day.

If you get a chance to come down to the Olvera Street, I HIGHLY recommend you stop and visit the places I visited above. They were nothing but gracious hosts and I learned so much from them! Questions are welcomed and I now have a deeper understanding and appreciation for this little part of town.

Also, please take advantage of Discover the Arts going on right now in LA. There are so many great deals for museums and museum shops right now. Go here to find out more and to see which of the many museums in LA are participating. If you do visit a new (or favorite) museum, please share! I would love to hear about your experience.

This is not a sponsored post. I was invited to the press conference and then for some tapas afterwards. It turned into this wonderful afternoon and I want to thank everyone for making it such a pleasure to discover this part of town.
