Get me to Hispanicize 2012!

$
0
0

2012 is a year of change for me. I am expanding myself by blogging more, getting out there, grabbing more opportunities, and finally... jumping head first into becoming a professional blogger. But chicas... I need help. I need the expertise of everyone out there who already does this for a living. I need more information, guidance and support. This is why I need to get my butt to Hispanicize (full disclosure: I will also be dragging my infant with me).

Getting to Hispanicize means that I have planted myself in the middle of all other Latino/a bloggers and confirmed that this is the year of change and growth. I will use all the knowledge that I will gain to propel Living Mi Vida Loca into a higher status.

I realize that my numbers aren't astronomical like other Latina bloggers are... I also realize that I don't have the heavy blogging experience that others do... but this is precisely why I want to go to this great conference. I want to be up there with all the other mera meras!

So here I am, asking for a chance to let me show you what I got by getting a ticket to Hispanicize from Latina Mom Bloggers.

p.s. I solemnly promise to tweet, write blog posts, update status and share the knowledge that I gain throughout the conference. I also promise to put everything that I learn into action and use the contacts that I make to the full extent in order to bring about more goodness to my readers and to this blog.

p.p.s. I promise to keep my infant nice and clean so that y'all don't smell anything funky coming from him.

p.p.p.s. Yes... I will steep as low as to ask my four year old to *mildly* beg on my behalf:

This is my entry to win an All Access sponsorship to the Hispanicize 2012 blog conference!

Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life DVD Review and {GIVEAWAY} #JeremyFink #Phase4Films

Available on March 6, 2012
Based on the beloved children’s novel by Wendy Mass, Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life is a family-friendly adventure film starring Academy Award® winner Mira Sorvino and Emmy Award® winner Joe Pantoliano. It will be hitting store shelves on DVD, on demand and in digital release, on March 6th.

Synposis
In the movie, 12-year-old Jeremy Fink receives a mysterious wooden box with the words “The Meaning of Life – for Jeremy Fink to open on his 13 birthday.” The box has four locks, but the keys are lost. In order to find out what secrets lie within the box, it’s up to Jeremy and his best friend Lizzy to search high and low throughout Manhattan for clues to the keys.

The adventure takes them from flea markets to science museums, and the duo meet an assortment of wacky and interesting characters along the way. Each encounter unlocks a clue, bringing them closer to finding out just what’s in the box – and ultimately the greatest secret of them all!

Review
We had a chance of previewing this movie and though my four year old didn't enjoy it as much, I sure did. It's quirky and fun and if I were younger (maybe pre-teen/early teens?), it would be one of my favorite movies. It has a great story line, and they do these collage-like scenes that are fun to watch. The characters are adventurous, the colors are bright and the writing is well done. The soundtrack is upbeat and the songs don't seem to be mainstream (which I like because I think it expands their music repertoire). It reminds me of a  Napoleon Dynamite/Juno-type of movie - but with dialogue that is more appropriate for the younger crowd. It was also a treat to see Mira Sorvino (she plays the mom) in a movie... I haven't seen her in ages.

All in all, if you have kids between ages 7 and 15, I'd say this would be a hit at home. Major bonus points to the mom that also buys the book!

Take a look at the trailer here:

The DVD is loaded with special features, including cast interviews, deleted scenes, bloopers, a limited edition embossed o-card with glitter spotting, and a downloadable audio reading by author Wendy Mass of the book’s first chapter.

Phase 4 Films will release JEREMY FINK AND THE MEANING OF LIFE on DVD at all major retailers for a $29.99 SRP in the U.S. and a $32.99 SRP in Canada. The film will also be available on demand and digital outlets.

For more information about Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life, please visit www.Phase4Films.com, www.facebook.com/phase4films or @Phase4Films.

Little Angels Screening Party Recap #LittleAngels

I was given the opportunity to host a Little Angels screening party for 10 kids. Well word got around and a waiting list for this very *exclusive* soiree had to be drawn up. I should note that there are many, many kids in my mom's apartment complex and I felt horrible about not being able to accommodate all of them.

This fiesta ended up being the talk of the complex thanks to all the wonderful goodies that were provided: angel wings and halos, wall decals, three movies, coloring pages and a craft activity. On top of all of that, we had some delicious kid food and prizes for correct answers to our trivia questions (given in between flicks).

All three movies were watched. Yup, it was a loooong party. The kids didn't want to leave and kept asking if there was going to be more things to do (a sign that the movies were good, right?). The characters in Little Angels are bright, colorful and have a way of teaching kids practical skills while mixing in some Bible stories. We had a great time and the kids left asking for an invite to our next party.

About Little Angels
From executive producer Roma Downey, who many will recognize from the hit show "Touched by an Angel", Little Angels will provide your family with real practical skills such as learning their ABC's and 123's. It also will teach them core family values, such as the importance of being kind and sharing, of being truthful and honest and of showing gratitude and love. The angels also offer your kids a glimpse into the world of the Bible by whisking Zoe and Alex (pre-school twins) back in time to some favorite Biblical stories. Along the way we meet Noah, Jonah, and Joshua, and of course, we witness Jesus teaching and healing.

Hola!

Let's practice our Spanish today by checking out this fun El Lórax trailer with Spanish subtitles:

Cute, right? I love the colors, the comedy and best of all, the meaning of the story. I've seen the vintage cartoon and I can't wait to take our kids to watch this new one.

While we wait for the movie to come out in theaters, we'll be checking out these Lorax-themed activities. I've found that it's fun to hype up the movie before we go watch it. It makes watching a movie feel more like an event.

We have a few must-see shows at home and The Big Bang Theory is one of them. Jim Parson's character, Sheldon, is by far my favorite character, but I also like Mayim Bialik's character as his girlfriend. Anyhow, I was excited to learn that Warner Bros. and Cryptozoic Entertainment partnered today to develop a new ‘The Big Bang Theory’ Party Game. The game will be based on the show and will allow fans to show off their insider, pop culture knowledge re: TBBT.

Players of The Big Bang Theory: The Party Game will compete to pair category cards with show insider phrases and references. Points will be awarded based on judging and ranking the card combinations – the player with the most points wins. There are also special Bazinga! cards that add a bit of chaos and surprise to the game play. Every card offers a different “The Big Bang Theory” moment, complete with photographs from the show.

Designed for three to six players (ages 15 and up), The Big Bang Theory: The Party Game will be available at retailers nationwide, including Amazon, ThinkGeek.com, Barnes & Noble, Hastings and f.y.e. – for your entertainment, for an MSRP of $29.99. For more information on the April 2012 release of The Big Bang Theory: The Party Game, please visit www.cryptozoic.com – and be sure to keep up to date with special contests, promotions and game information on Cryptozoic Entertainment’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

My Review
When I first heard of Braced-lets I thought it was a little creepy. I never wore braces when I was a kid, so I don't have that feeling of pride when one relates to a product. I imagined the braced-lets looking weird on my wrist. It was a different story once I received them in the mail.

Once I got over the fact that this type of material goes in someone's mouth, I started to see them for what they really are... totally cool and funky to wear. Even my four year old got in on the fun and grabbed a couple for himself. I should note, they are not intended for children under the age of 6. However, my kid is not the type to stick his accessories in his mouth so I'm pretty certain that he won't be ripping them apart and choking on the small pieces.

The braced-lets are offered in many, many different colors individually or in groups. They retail for $4.95 and can be purchased online at www.bracedlets.com. They're a hit all over the world, including Japan and the UK, and I'm sure they'll be the next-big-thing here in the U.S.

By the way, my favorite mag, Harper's Bazaar, gave them the thumbs up last year. Why do you care? Because it means that you can wear them without feeling like they're meant just for teens!

Oops, I almost forgot. They take the whole ortho-style a little bit further by offering these cute cases where you can store your braced-lets. Wouldn't it be a cute Easter basket stuffer?

Feature Friday: The Mommy Hook {Product Review}

$

The Good: The Mommy Hook is crafted from durable aluminum and is cushioned with a rubber sleeve to keep it from sliding. I use it to hang toys off of it so my 8-month old doesn't drop them from the carts, to hang my bags from and to bring up my shopping bags from downstairs. It has a great non-slip cover on it so it doesn't slide around when it's in use.

Because it's lightweight, I can take it everywhere I go without adding a substantial amount of weight in my bag. It's of great quality and easy enough to open that even my four year old can do it.

The Not-So-Good: I would like to see more color options. Preferably darker colors that the Hubster wouldn't be embarrassed to be seen with. It would also be nice if they came in a smaller size so those bags with the long handles don't touch the ground.

Overall: I found it incredibly useful, affordable ($6.99) and one of those can't-live-without products. Built to last, lightweight and versatile, The Mommy Hook is specifically designed for the rugged sport of parenting. It's unlike those cheap plastic hangers that often break. The Mommy Hook is sold in Wal-Mart, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, as well as independent baby stores around the country.

Visit www.momdadandbaby.com or www.themommyhook.com for more details. For updates, follow @momdadandbaby on Twitter and like Mom, Dad and Baby on Facebook.

I'm talking about Pretend City’s FREE Good to Go from Head to Toe’s Family Fun and Wellness Fair because it's something that I will be attending along with my family and if you're in Orange County with small kids, I hope you can make it out too.

Pretend City wants parents to know that healthy development is more than just luck. Taking a proactive approach to your child’s development can help set them up for success! Developmental checkups are head-to-toe assessments that ensure a child’s growth and development is progressing on track. A startling number of children in OC do not receive routine developmental checkups, as it is not part of a standard well-child visit.

Families are invited to bring their children to Good To Go From Head To Toe’s 3rd Annual Family Fun and Wellness Fair Saturday, March 17, 2012 from 9am-2pm at Pretend City Children’s Museum. The event features:
  • Free developmental screenings
  • Free child ID cards
  • Community and health-related activities
  • Nutritious eating options
  • Live music;
  • and many other opportunities for family fun.
Screenings are for children ages 0-5 and include hearing, speech and language, behavior, BMI, fine and gross motor, and dental. If a child visits three of the checkup stations, they will receive free admission, an $11 value, to Pretend City, good for one year from the date of the event.

Pretend City believes that fun-filled events like the Family Fun and Wellness Fair can ease parental concerns about their children’s health through education and a caring environment. This year the fair falls on St. Patrick’s Day so children can also partake in fun Irish-themed activities including: Live Music and Performances by the Claddagh Irish Dance Company and the Amazing Kazoom Band, as well as face painting, prize giveaways and more!

A variety of health-related vendors including: Speech Pathology Associates, Dr. Selena Emond, Head To Toe Therapy, Racing Ahead, Providence Speech & Hearing, South OC Pediatric Dentistry, Zachary Orthodontics, Orange County Health Care Agency, Help Me Grow Orange County and Irvine Unified & Laguna Beach Unified School Readiness Nurses.

There will also be healthy foods available from Jamba Juice, Seabirds food truck and Lulu’s Café. The event is sponsored by OC Family, Playlist 92.7 and California Pizza Kitchen.

Prepare for Spring Break with Westminster Mall #ShopWestminster

Spring Break is upon us. While I don't have any kids in school, the Hubster does and I look forward to Spring Break just like everyone else does. It means that he'll head home after work and spend quality time with us. Perhaps he'll take a day (or two) off of work so we can bond? This wife can hope!

So with this beautiful Cali weather I am uber-excited for this coming week and what's to come. I'm prepared because this year, I headed over to Westminster Mall and geared the family up with everything that we need... and I did it on a budget! Here are a few items that I found which we'll use and were a total deal.

It's Spring Break central over at Forever 21! The prices make these pieces totally affordable and because you'll use these goodies often, they'll practically pay for themselves! I bought that huge black floppy hat over on the right hand side. Wasn't much of a splurge since it costs around $10.

My four year old loves sandals... probably because he enjoys being lazy when the sunny days come around and he can put them on in a jiffy. I bought him two pairs of sandals for only $6 at The Children's Place! A great deal. Though I will note that the Old Navy store has two pairs for $5 (which I found out later via their Twitter page).

One of my favorite parts of the day is the time right before the kids wake-up. When I have the place to myself and I can enjoy a hot cup of coffee. This coming week, I'm going to make that week extra special by brewing some gourmet coffee on my Keurig. It'll be my treat.

And finally, a staycation is really about your state of mind. Indulge your senses by lighting a candle - preferably in one of these exotic scents (available at Bath and Body Works).

I could go on and on about all the wonderful Spring Break items I found at Westminster Mall... seems like the whole mall got the memo. The items above were my fav. So now that you know what I'll be doing with my Spring Break, tell me... what are your plans?

Find the Wesminster Mall on Facebook and follow all their great deals and steals.
