About Bourne Legacy

As you might know, the narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy (in theaters August 3.) The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films.

For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.

As some of you know, we live in a cable/satellite-less home. We (including our 4 year old) rely on Netflix and Hulu, along with plain ol' regular broadcasting, to get our TV fix. My four year old in particular has become quite the master at finding new shows to watch on Netflix and has recently stumbled upon Gadget Boy. Imagine my surprise when I get an email asking to review Gadget Boy along with other oldies but goodies like Heathcliff and Archie!

As soon as our package came, our four year old claimed Gadget Boy as his own. And interestingly enough, the Hubster went for Heathcliff and I went for Archie. We got a little bit nostalgic thinking back to our childhood when we would lounge around and watch cartoons (remember that?).

Now thanks to Mill Creek Entertainment, you too can enjoy these quality DVDs that provide hours of fun and edutainment for kids at impressively affordable price! They introduce and engage your kids in a retro-resurgence of nostalgia and discovery from icons of the '80s and '90s.

From Archie's Weird Mysteries (first time available in its entirety on home video) and Heathcliff to Carmen Sandiego (first-time availability of all 40 edutainment episodes) and Sherlock Holmes to Gadget Boy (first-time available on DVD), Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors and more, each of these DVDs is jam-packed with multiple entertaining episodes (plus bonus episodes--shhhh!) at bargain prices starting at just $7.99.

Parents can visit this page http://bit.ly/TVFBKIDS25 and use discount code TVFBKIDS25 to save 25% off some already incredibly affordable DVD prices!

Feature Friday: The Clorox Family of Toilet Introduces #CloroxLounge

It's early here in Orange County and I just got off The Clorox Lounge page and boy am I awake now. I just finished watching the clip where the gals have to sit in a bathroom stall and entertain unsuspecting visitors in the stall next to them. The girls are hilarious! My favorite one was the one that was trying to make the girl next to her pinky swear that she wouldn't share her patent pending "toilates".

Don't know what The Clorox Lounge is? Read on:

The Clorox Family of Toilet Products recently launched a fun new Web site celebrating one of the most-used and underrated rooms in our homes - the bathroom! The Clorox Lounge is turning the bathroom into the laughroom with a community hub designed to be a mom’s go-to place for comedy. Hosted by comedian, actress and mom Sherri Shepherd, the site found at TheCloroxLounge.com features hilarious anecdotes, fun contests, exciting give-a-ways, coupons and just the right amount of comic relief. An inspiration for an entire genre of comedy, the potty is often named as the number one place for moms to find a moment of quiet and a break from a busy day! Whether it’s potty training, cleaning wars, or simply rites of passage that come with kids growing-up, the bathroom is such a huge part of our lives.

It's funny that the bathroom is named as the number one place for moms to find a moment of quiet and break from our busy day because it seems that my son has missed the memo. I get ZERO privacy in our home, even in the restroom. For example, I'll be taking a shower, hoping to get a few minutes alone  - away from my two crazy kids - when next thing you know, my four year old will be opening the shower door only to hand me a toy that needs to be fixed. Yes! He doesn't see why I can't multi-task and fix his toy while I'm in the middle of washing my hair. Might I also add that he'll get upset if I get his toy wet? My kid is a total nut.

If you have five minutes, I recommend you take a break, grab a cup of coffee and watch the Last Comic Sitting Competition... just make sure not to spurt out any coffee on your computer.

Visit The Clorox Lounge to sign-up for the Last Comic Sitting Competition and Sweepstakes and be automatically entered for a chance to win the top prize - $10,000!

Refrigeration Time: 4 hrs 30 mins
Yields 8 servings

  • ½ cup frozen strawberries (about 8), thawed, drained

Instructions:
FOR MANDARIN ORANGE LAYER:
  1. COAT a 9 x 5-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. DISSOLVE orange gelatin in 1/2 cup boiling water in small bowl. Let stand for 10 minutes.
  3. Place dissolved gelatin, mandarin oranges and 1 cup evaporated milk in blender; cover. Puree for 10 seconds or until well blended.
  4. Pour into loaf pan.
  5. Refrigerate for 30 minutes or until set.
FOR PINEAPPLE LEMON LAYER

Chocolate Chip Easter Baskets
Preparation Time: 45 mins

Ingredients:
  • 1 package (16.5 ounces.) NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Refrigerated Chocolate Chip Cookie
    Bar Dough
  • 1 cup prepared white frosting
  • 1/4 cup sweetened flaked coconut
  • Green food coloring
  • WONKA SweeTARTS or SPREE Jelly Beans
  • Thin-string licorice, various colors, cut into 3-inch pieces for basket handles (optional)
Instructions:
  1. PREHEAT oven to 350° F. Grease and flour 24 mini-muffin cups. Place one square of cookie dough into each cup.
  2. BAKE for 14 to 17 minutes or until golden brown. Remove pans to wire rack. If licorice handles are to be added, with tip of wooden pick, make two holes opposite each other on top edge of cup. Make sure holes are the same size as the width of the licorice. This is best done when cups are very warm. Cool cups completely in pans on wire rack. With tip of butter knife, remove cookie cups from muffin pans. Arrange on serving platter.
  3. COMBINE frosting and a few drops of food coloring in small bowl, adding additional food coloring until desired shade is reached.
  4. DISSOLVE a few drops of food coloring in 1/4 teaspoon water in small, resealable food storage plastic bag. Add coconut. Seal bag and shake to evenly coat coconut.
  5. SPOON a small amount of frosting onto the top of each cup. Add a pinch of tinted coconut. Top grass with SweeTarts Jelly Beans. Insert ends of licorice into small holes in cups for handles.

[CLOSED] HOP Review + {GIVEAWAY}

We've been in the Easter spirit around here and watching Hop has only elevated it. Though Hop came out in theaters a year ago, the Blu-ray/DVD will be released tomorrow, March 23, 2012 and retailers are hopping (yes, I'm hilarious) on the bandwagon by releasing special offers.

About Hop
He was destined to be the Easter Bunny, but all he wanted to do was rock! When teenage E.B. (voiced by Russell Brand) leaves for Hollywood in pursuit of his dream to become a rockstar drummer, he meets Fred (James Marsden), an out-of-work slacker with his own lofty goals. Together the two encounter a series of hilarious mishaps and misadventures and in the end help each other recognize the importance of family.

My Thoughts
I watched Hop recently for the first time, though the Hubster and four year old had seen it last year and liked it. It's one of those films that you'll want to watch as part of an Easter tradition. It's cute to watch, Russell Brand does a fabulous job of voicing E.B. and the storyline isn't overly complicated. The humor in the film isn't over-the-top, though there are some references that the kids won't get (like the Playboy mansion). I wasn't crazy about Hank Azria voicing Carlos and Phil - one of them being the "bad" chick - I think they could have just hired someone like George Lopez to voice Carlos since he's supposed to be Hispanic.

Some of the acting, particularly on James Marsden's side, is exaggerated, but I think it has to be for the kids to get it. All in all, it's a great movie and I, as a Latina, am not buying into the racism claims and I hope that you don't either. Give the movie a try, if you haven't already.

About Wrath of the Titans
A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus (Worthington) —the demigod son of Zeus (Neeson)—is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius. Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity’s lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades (Fiennes) and Poseidon (Huston). The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld. Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus’ godly son, Ares (Ramírez), switch loyalties and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans’ strength grows stronger as Zeus’ remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth. Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda (Pike), Poseidon’s demigod son, Argenor (Kebbell), and fallen god Hephaestus (Nighy), Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.

Feature Friday: Getting the Farm to My Table #TropFloridaOJ

You've heard of Tropicana, right? I mean... who hasn't. They're known for their delicious Tropicana Pure Premium 100% Pure Florida Orange Juice and the way they make us feel like our juice came straight from the grove. As a Southern California native, I never really thought about where my food came from. It was hard to connect my city life with the farm and therefore, connect that my food was grown here in the U.S. and didn't magically appear on the grocery shelves.

As a Mami, it has become important that our children connect where their food comes from, how it's created and how it gets to our table. One big way that helps this is our visits to Farmers Markets. It's the easiest (and most delicious) way of doing this. We get to meet the growers, sample and purchase their goodies and I love the locals getting together and supporting our community.

Another way we work on getting the farm to our table is through co-ops that are set up in different parts of the county. The way it works is families all pitch in a certain monetary amount and then once a month, a big box of fruits and veggies are available for pick-up at a central location. These goodies are organic and locally grown.

As a family, we make a point of eating in season, buying locally and really connecting our farms to our table. This summer, we'll be visiting this a local farm and enjoying their tours and fruit-picking experience. We'll also continue to buy Tropicana Pure Premium 100% Pure Florida Orange Juice because really, it's the easiest and most convenient way of bringing the farm to our table. They do all the hard work by purchasing approximately 11.6 billion oranges from groves in 22 different Florida counties. What do we have to do? Take a short walk to our grocery store and buy it! It doesn't get any easier than that.

Get in on the Tropicana bandwagon (if you're not on already) and enter the Tropicana Perfect Pick! Sweepstakes:
Enter the Tropicana sweepstakes for a chance to be one of the ninety-nine winners will get a one-year supply of orange juice in the form of twelve coupons for (12) 59 oz Tropicana Pure Premium® containers. One winner will get a trip to a Florida orange grove and invite three (3) guests for:  Round-trip airfare for four (4) to Florida, three (3) night stay at a Florida hotel. The winner will have an exclusive experience at experience at a Florida orange grove.

[CLOSED] The Muppets: Movie Review + {GIVEAWAY}

$

One of the year’s best-loved family comedies and among the best reviewed films of 2011, Disney’s “The Muppets,” starring Jason Segel, Amy Adams, and favorite celebrity couple Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy -- debuted on March 20 on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, Digital Download and On-Demand formats. We received the Wocka Wocka Value Pack for review and I was thankful for that because I went to my local Best Buy and they were sold out of it! So when this came in I was uber-happy.

I watched it today for the first time and it was everything that I wanted it to be. It was funny, family friendly and the story wasn't overly complicated or hard to follow.

Film Synopsis
On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, his brother Gary (Jason Segel) and Gary’s girlfriend, Mary (Amy Adams), from Smalltown, USA, discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to raze Muppet Studios and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets’ former stomping grounds. To stage a telethon and raise the $10 million needed to save the studio, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie now performs with a Reno casino tribute band called the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a high-powered plumbing magnate.

My four year old REALLY liked this movie. His favorite part was watching the chickens "sing" to Cee Lo Green's Forget You. I, on the other hand, loved it every time Chris Cooper's character did his maniacal laugh.

I should also mention this lovely feature that we experienced while watching it on Blu-ray...  their groundbreaking industry first -- ‘Disney Intermission.’ It's a hilarious all-new feature that allows viewers to press Pause on their remote control and watch as the Muppets take over the screen and entertain until the movie resumes playing. We used it a few times because life is hectic with kids and nearly impossible to watch a movie from beginning to end without having to pause it.

Product Review: Doodle Roll

$

The Doodle Roll is manufactured by Imagination Brands Co., LLC, a small US based company. It's an all-in-one portable arts and crafts activity kit. The Doodle Roll contains a roll of paper and crayons in a compact package that doubles as a handy dispenser. A perfect “anywhere, anytime” family product, the Doodle Roll is available in two sizes - 4” which contains 15’ of paper and 4 crayons or 6” which contains 30” of paper and 4 cool double sided crayons - with a safe EZ tear edge. It makes the perfect party favor, stocking stuffer, classroom activity or storyboard thanks to its uber-affordable price (under $5).

My four year old opened up the 6" roll and went to town with it. He gets these bursts of creativity and will draw like 20 pictures at once and then stick them up on the fridge. Doing a million pictures on this Doodle Roll means that I can put it up in his room like a wall runner. It's awesome!

The EZ tear edge is sharp enough to cut paper, but not sharp enough to cut your finger. It makes it easy for the kids to tear the paper themselves. The colors that they come with are also top-notch. This was honestly a concern of mine because I have seen great paper products (or sets) with cheap crayons that don't color. You know which ones right? The kind that are usually found at restaurants because they go through so many and they don't want to shell out precious pennies for decent Crayola-type crayons. The Doodle Roll is an exception. The crayons were worth the package that they came in.

The Doodle Roll is competing in WalMart’s “Get on the Shelf” contest and they need lots of votes. If they win, their products may be available both online and in WalMart stores across the country.

How can you help Doodle Roll get the most votes?

I received two rolls of Doodle Roll to facilitate my review. My thoughts and opinions were not swayed simply because I was provided with the product.

LA Event Recap: Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked DVD Release #AlvinRocks

We had such a great time last night at the Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked DVD Release party. We met lots of stars, including the Chipmunks, enjoyed some great food provided by Wolfgang Puck, a concert by Honor Society and Ariana Grande, and came home with lots of leis. I wish I could have taken better pictures, but the lighting was kind of dark in there. The swag bag included a mini Alvin, which my son has been sporting as an accessory (even matching his shoes to Alvin's sweater).

Here are a few of my fav pictures:

My mom with Matthew Gray Gubler
My mom is a huge Criminal Minds fan and she was as giddy as I would have been meeting one of my favorite stars (Cher, anyone?). I was beyond happy that he was uber-pleasant and friendly. I told him how my Aunt in Mexico watches his show and loves it... even though it's not subtitled or voiced in Spanish. My Aunt may have zero idea of what they're saying, but that doesn't stop her from being glued to her TV set every week.

With Jamie Bamber
HUGE Battlestar Galactica fans over here. The Hubster got me into this show and we've been patiently waiting for a movie (which, by the way, Jamie said he hadn't heard anything about). It was a real treat getting a picture with him and talking about the show.

Honor Society
This was my first time hearing about Honor Society. They're a big-deal group out of New York and when they performed, I could see why they were such a hit.

My son with Jason Lee
My four year old has seen every Alvin movie (2000 and older) and some of the older ones too. He loves the music and the over-the-top acting makes these movies intriguing to him. Meeting Jason Lee was the icing on the cake. He was proudly showing his Spiderman balloon figure, but you can't really see it because of the lighting.

Inside the Event
No details were spared in this event. Palm trees were everywhere, pineapples on every table and even the cuisine was very tropical. Piña Coladas and Strawberry Daiquiris were served along with a delicious ice cream bar with tons of different toppings. Way to go event planners!

Feature Friday: Orange County's LashSpot Spa | @LashSpotSpa

As most of you know, I was laid off from my full-time Executive Assistant position in 2009. Since then, I have cut back on purchases here and there. First to go was our travel budget, followed by my accessories budget and so on. I have even scaled back on beauty purchases. I used to be the gal that had the V.I.B. pass at Sephora... no more. However, I do feel that there are certain splurges that cannot be done away with. These include: facial cleaners and moisturizers, shaped and threaded brows, microdermabrasions and I have just added: lash extensions. Yes mujeres... lash extensions. If you don't have them - get them. Never tried them? Do it! I'm not kidding, the transformation that is done in such a short amount of time is unbelievable!

Room. Image courtesy of LashSpot Spa.
I was invited to the lovely and modern LashSpot Spa in Costa Mesa to try my first set of lashes last week. We received a mini-mini lash service that gave me the confidence of a full lash service. As I was escorted to the room, I couldn't help but feel special and totally in the "in." The white-washed walls with simple accents give you the feel of an upscale salon with a down-to-earth staff. Maureen, my "extenstionist", was uber-nice and answered my 101 questions.

One of the questions that I had was just how long they lasted. Because they are glued to your own eyelashes, they last the duration of the lash life. I didn't know my lashes fell off in 60-90 day intervals, but I was happy to know that simply applying water to them wouldn't make them fall off.

I was also concerned with the lashes looking "fake". Yes, I know they're fake, but I don't want the world to know that! Unlike the strip lashes that are applied to the base of the eyelashes, these will be attached to your lashes and they will curl at the end, giving them a natural look.

LashSpot only uses premium silk or mink lashes. The lashes are animal cruelty free, made of a synthetic material to emulate a silk or mink material. They are the highest quality lashes. The silk and mink feel softer, lighter, and look more luxurious than a normal lash extension. The extenionist will choose a length that is most appropriate for you based on your current lashes. You don't want them to look fake, right?

Here is a great example of the challenge they had in me:

Notice my eyelashes... how straight and very blah-ish. They refuse to keep a curl even with tons of mascara on. I just don't have lashes that I can bat at the Hubster. I have lashes that keep dust out of my eyes. I know... boring. Notice also the eyebrows. I let them grow for about three weeks. Yes! THREE WEEKS! I wanted to see just how great they would do in shaping brows because that is another service that they are known for. Thankfully, I also had my bangs cut so the eyebrows couldn't really be seen in the mess that they were in.

She walked me through the procedures and put these soft, cushiony pads under my eyes that both held and moisturized my skin.

About a half hour later, I opened my eyes to this:

Notice the lashes, the extension in them and the natural look? I'm hooked, I'm in love, I will do everything that I can to get them for.the.rest.of.my.life. I am not kidding. Because of these beautiful little lashes, my eyes look brighter, I look better rested, my make-up process has been cut down dramatically and I have actually gone days without applying any make-up on. I can totally pull the "natural" look and still look a little made up. I'm the biggest fan and proponent of lashes out there.

And my eyebrows don't look too shabby either:

LashSpot Spa is THE place to go if you're in Orange County and looking to invest in your awesome self. The process is so relaxing that moms have been known to take naps during the application. They provide blankets to make you even more comfortable and play soft music in the background. It's an experience that will keep you coming back.

The gals there professional, know what they're doing and will make you look stunning. They also offer a monthly membership that gets you great discounts on different services. I really can't say enough about them and how great they make me feel every time that I look into a mirror. If I have you so pumped up that you just HAVE to try it out for yourself, then save yourself some money too and check out their first-time client specials.

A few other things: if extensions aren't for you, but you have sad lashes like mine, then ask about their lash perm. It'll last just as long, but without the addition of fake lashes. Also, they offer a special cleanser for removing eye make-up, including mascara. It's safe for the lashes and for you. Just spray it on and splash gently with water to remove it.

I should also note that I felt my vision a little tiny bit blurry afterwards. Because you're not supposed to wet the lashes at least 24 hours after the application, I think I was being extra careful not to blink too much, or maybe it was the glue drying. Either way, my vision got back to normal the day after.

Check 'em out on Facebook and if you're in the area, check them out in person too. Make it a girl/mom's day out and enjoy a little pampering. Let them know I sent you!
