Girl in Progress {Movie Review} @PantelionFilms #GirlInProgress

I saw Girl in Progress while I was in Miami a few weeks ago and I can honestly tell you that it's a movie that I really connected to. Not because the main actors are Latinas, but because I could relate to what Cierra's character did... it's probably how I would have reacted back in my teenage years.

This movie has a different kind of coming-of-age story that plays out in that Ansiedad (Cierra Ramirez) is a smart girl to begin with and the way that she goes about moving on to the next stage in her life theoretically makes sense. Grace (Eve Mendes) is a Mami who doesn't realize what a difference she could make in her daughter's life if only she would stop and pay just a little more attention to her daughter and see that she is growing up and needs more than just a roof over her head.

This movie is full of good stuff. I can promise you that your heart will break for Ansiedad (the name, by the way, translates to "anxiety") and you will shed tears. If you're taking your Mami to the movies this weekend, take her to see this one. There will be zero regrets.

By the way, keep an eye out for Cierra Ramirez. This girl is going places and I have a feeling that you'll be seeing her everywhere soon.

ABOUT GIRL IN PROGRESS:
Grace (Eva Mendes) is a single mom, too preoccupied with "paying the bills" and herself to notice that her teenage daughter, Ansiedad (Cierra Ramirez) is in desperate need of her attention. When Ansiedad's English teacher, Ms. Armstrong (Patricia Arquette), introduces her students to classic coming-of-age stories, Ansiedad decides to jump start her own coming of age and all the pain associated with it, as a shortcut to "adulthood" and more importantly a life without her mom. As her misguided plan unravels, in some comedic yet poignant series of events, both Ansiedad and Grace must learn that sometimes growing-up means acting your own age.

Britax Latina Bloggers Advisory Board Launching Event {Recap}

When I found out that I was going to be visiting North Carolina to tour the Britax headquarters I was excited. Excited because I wanted to learn more about Britax, its products and the company behind the name. I didn't expect to form strong friendships and ties with other fellow bloggers, really get to understand Britax' mission and whole-heartily put my name and my blog behind the company.

The event started with dinner at Harry's Grille and Tavern. We were a group of around thirty including Jon, the president of Britax and Carolina, the gal that got Britax to take a gamble on us.

We played a hilarious round of White Elephant and although most of us had only met virtually, by the end of the night we all felt like sisters. This is something that I feel Britax was trying to purposely accomplish so that we could effectively create a community as like-minded as we are - focused on our families, their safety and using only the best products out there to do so.

We got back to our hotel room and crashed for the night because we had a full day ahead of us. We're talking about hours of Britax low-down. Where they come from, what they stand for, the zillion of safety tests that they do and meeting everyone at Britax headquarters. There were also tons of product features and showings, a video that made me cry, the What to Expect When You're Expecting trailer and what part Britax plays in it and most importantly, a story told by Carolina that touched me to the deepest part of my heart and what eventually won me over to support Britax with every fiber of my being. They get IT. They get us Mamis. They listen to us, learn about what we want and then they implement it into their products.

Jon, President of Britax talking about where to purchase Britax
I learned TONS about Britax. My head is crammed full of interesting facts and if I try to put everything down in this post, you'll probably stop reading so I'll just post a few:

  • Britax car and booster seats are made by hand in North Carolina. (I can attest to this as I saw the workers when we toured the factory). Individual components are shipped to Britax and put together in their factory.
  • There is a seven day lead time. Your seat is not made until it's ordered.
  • The Britax team that assembles the seats leave at 12:30 p.m. on Fridays.
  • Britax holds focus studies to ensure that market needs are being addressed.
  • Rip stitch tethers in car seats have stitches that break one-by-one if/when it's in a car accident essentially breaking the fall for the kid in the seat.
  • The workers make about 472 car seats a day
  • Fabric testing in the lab ensures that the color on the car seats don't bleed onto your kids' clothes.
  • Britax is phasing out halogenated flame retardants from their fabrics.
  • They make their own perspiration (ew?!) to see how it transfers onto the fabric, how it washes, etc.
  • They throw their fabric in the wash to see how it holds up, even though they specifically suggest washing their fabrics by hand.
  • Environmental temperature testing lets them know how it reacts during extreme weather conditions.
  • There have been no fatalities in a Britax car seat.
  • Britax did over two thousand tests in their sleds - those cool makeshift cars with crash dummies in them
  • Infant car seats are focused on the "rebound" impact.

Seat Protector - made of rubber increasing the safety of the seat.

EZ Cling Window Shade - no suction cups needed!

Join me in this wonderful adventure with Britax over the new couple of years as we team up to bring you more information on their products, product reviews and giveaways.

Smart Sunscreen Use with tips from Coppertone #coppertonewatermoms

$

Yesterday we talked about Summer clothing. Today? Summer skin care. I live in Southern California where we have the sun all year round. That means that we are constantly toting around hats, sunglasses and most importantly, sun screen. We don't have "seasons" here (sometimes I wish we did!) so we need to ensure that we are always taking care of our skin and avoid the dreaded "c" word. Here are a few tips (or reminders), courtesy of Coppertone.

Sun Care Tips: Smart Sunscreen Use

Get a head start on the sun. Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before you are exposed to the sun.
Don't skimp on sunscreen. Use it liberally and apply it evenly over all exposed skin to ensure complete coverage. Reapply as directed. Cover all the bases.
It's easy to overlook spots like the ears, neck, and shoulders, but they need sunscreen too. Remember to grab a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses and to seek shade when the sun is most intense.
Follow the numbers. SPF tells you the level of protection a sunscreen provides from sunburn. Use sunscreen with broad spectrum SPF 15 or higher whenever you'll be outdoors.
Reapply, reapply, reapply. Apply another coat of sunscreen as needed, at least every 2 hours- and be sure to reapply after swimming, sweating, vigorous activity or toweling off.
Select water resistant sunscreens that can keep up with kids. Use water resistant sunscreens with broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher, and look for products that are quick and easy to apply to squirmy kids. (Keep babies under six months of age out of the sun and consult a doctor before applying sunscreen.)

For more sun care tips, please visit coppertone.com. You'll also find a Local UV Index and a link to a coupon that you can use on Coppertone products.

Pasta de Lassar - Baby Photo Contest and Intro (@PastaDeLassar)

I have an 11 month old baby now (whew... where has the time gone?) and diaper rash cream is once again a staple in our home. However, we use it for more than just diaper rash treatment and prevention. I also use it to treat and prevent rashes under his chubby little chin and on his neck. I slather it on his thighs too and if my four year old is itchy... well I put it on him too.

I was recently contacted by Pasta De Lassar, an extremely popular diaper rash cream from just across the border, and I am happy to report that I'll be trying out their cream and reporting my findings to you. It's currently available at select retailers including Walmart and I'm honestly eager to see how it pares up to other creams that I've used in the past. I hope that it doesn't get runny and watery like one that I used last month. Count on my honest and frank review Mami!

Get your underarms ready for Summer with Dove Clear Tone Anti-Perspirant/Deodorant (@Dove)

Summer is practically here and we have some things to do before we can properly welcome it. I'm talking about getting your body Summer ready. I'm not talking about losing those few pounds to get bikini ready (because honestly I'm going to bypass that step and just wear flowy dresses), I'm talking about underarm beauty. Yes! You'll be wearing short-sleeve tees, tank tops, tube tops, etc. and those underarms have got to look their best! It's super easy to have them look hot when you use Dove Clear Tone Anti-Perspirant and Deodorant. How do I know this? Because I've used it and.it.works. I now shamelessly raise my arms (sometimes both) without feeling like I have something to hide.

So why did I start using it? Well because like most of you, I shave my underarms and shaving can have harsh effects on delicate underarms. It can cause skin to lose up to 50 percent more moisture, leading to dryness and inflammation. This, in turn, can lead to red and dark marks that 32 million (*gasp*) U.S. women experience. I was part of those 32 million women and slowly but surely, I worked my way out of the statistic by using the new Dove Clear Tone Anti-perspirant/deodorant. It is the only deodorant in the U.S. designed to visibly reduce red and dark marks and even skin tone when you use it on a regular basis.

So what exactly does this new Dove Clear Tone Anti-perspirant/deodorant have? Well it's formulated with calendula, sunflower seed extracts and unique Dove moisturizers, help accelerate the natural skin renewal process. I started using the solid stick but then switched to the clinical anti-perspirant/deodorant when we went to Florida. The solid stick is just like your regular deodorant. It smells fresh with the added benefit of helping to reduce red and dark marks and even skin tone. The clinical version is cream based so when you turn the knob at the bottom, a little bit of cream-like anti-perspirant/deodorant comes out and it applies evenly and smoothly to the skin.

I can honestly tell you that it works. I've been using it for about a month and I wish I had taken a before picture to show you the difference. I will tell you that these products all have aluminum so if that's a deal-breaker for you, I'm sorry. I myself went aluminum-free for a while, but I found that it just didn't pare up to other deodorants during the hot weather.

I leave you with this video on giving yourself a PitiCure. The name itself is hilarious and I did a double-take when I first heard about it from Mariela Bagnato. But I did it and boy do I feel different. It always amazes me the little things that can be done to make one's self feel better, fresher and more confident. Changing nail polish does the same thing for me.

Just in case you miss it, here are the instructions for doing your own PitiCure using Dove deodorants. Mariela recommends that you do the Step 1 at least once a month.

Step 1
Stary by using a gently exfoliating body wash or towelette to remove impurities that cause irritation, ingrown hairs and red bumps.

Step 2
Rinse thoroughly, shave normally and pat underarms with a towel.

Step 3
Apply Dove Clear Tone deodorant.

Feel free to follow Dove on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/dove

App of the Week - SitorSquat by @Charmin

What the first thing that you do when you walk into a store? Look for a restroom. At least I do. I may not go into it, but I need to know where it is just in case either of our two kids HAVE to go.  Charmin has taken this a step further with their Sit or Squat app available for the iPhone and Android phones. The app is available in both English and Spanish.

SitOrSquat by Charmin helps you find public restrooms near you or where you're planning to travel. Once you install SitOrSquat, you can search, view, rate and add public restrooms to help you, your family and others enjoy the "go."

All the content on the app is added by users. They currently have over 100,000 bathrooms! I will note that you do have to use your Facebook login if you want to help update the database or post photos or reviews. But you don't need to login to Facebook to access the date. It's had mixed reviews up to now, but I really think it depends where in the country you are. I typed in my zip code and it found a bunch.

If you get the app, I would love to know your thoughts. The idea itself is incredible useful though, don't you think?

Pattie's Sparkle Duo. @Cottonelle knows what I'm talking about. #NameIt

I'm stepping out of my comfort zone and talking about the Cottonelle Care Routine. Yes, THAT routine. The one that keeps us, um, "fresh" by using the Cottonelle Ultra Comfort Care™ Toilet Paper and Cottonelle Fresh Care™ Flushable Wipes. Don't worry, this post is totally G-rated and it won't make you lose your lunch.

"Pattie's Sparkle Duo" is a routine that we have been doing for a long while now, but before today it didn't really have a name. It was more of a routine that started with toilet paper and ended with, "don't forget to wipe your stinky butt", said to my four year old son.

Cottonelle is comically addressing this routine and helping us to talk about it with their Name Generator. Using the Name Generator you can give your routine a name in the Name It app: http://on.fb.me/IBVVvm. "Pattie's Sparkle Duo" is the name that I generated using the app. I have to give it credit because it wasn't my cleverness that came up with it.

Like many other parents out there, we used baby wipes in our "Pattie's Sparkle Duo" routine before Cottonelle came along and gave us their fresh care flushable wipes. Interestingly enough, North America hasn't really caught on to the idea of using both products together in their care routine. Shocking to me but I have to say, once you start the routine you will never go back.

So if you've tried the routine, what do you call it? Need help coming up with a super clever name like mine? Well now you can join other Cottonelle Ultra Comfort Care Toilet Paper and Fresh Care Flushable Wipes users on the Name It app on Facebook.com/Cottonelle. The Name Generator on Cottonelle Brand’s Facebook Page will allow users to get a name in three fun ways:
  • The Randomizer: Simply click to get a name instantly
  • The Personalizer: Answer a few questions for a personalized name (this is the one I used)
  • The Customizer: Create a name to add to our Book of Names and enter for a chance to win a year’s supply of Cottonelle products. Winners will be selected in a random drawing on a weekly basis.

To qualify for the year’s supply of Cottonelle Ultra Comfort Care and Cottonelle Fresh Care, entrants must create a name through The Customizer on Cottonelle Brand’s Facebook Page between June 12, 2012, and February 28, 2013.  See full terms and conditions on Cottonelle Brand’s Facebook Page or Cottonelle.com.

You can also participate by following @Cottonelle on Twitter for exclusive opportunities to win #NameIt prizes. Need some inspiration? Check out the Book of Names on Cottonelle.com to see what others have named their routine and get fun bathroom trivia.

And if freshening up your routine inspires you to freshen up your home, might I suggest these tips courtesy of HGTV’s Cash and Cari and Estate Sale Guru, Cari Cucksey:

Looking to perk-up up your tired living room and don’t want to break the bank for new furniture? Awaken your tired furniture with new throw pillows in vibrant colors and pick up a few accessories to match. It’s an inexpensive way to brighten the room and make you feel at home again.

Bathroom feeling like it needs a pick me up? Consider wallpaper…it’s a great way to breathe new life into a smaller space. Consider a textured paper to really make a dramatic change. Enhance your new bathroom’s look with new hand towels. Hang a framed mirror for the finishing touch… many tag sales and thrift shops offer an array of mirrors for a fraction of retail. Don’t forget to upgrade your toiletries and include a fresh roll of Cottonelle Ultra Care toilet paper and Cottonelle Fresh Care flushable wipes!

Spring has sprung and that means it’s time to de-clutter and clean out those closets! Consider donating your items or consigning the more valuable items to your local consignment shop. Looking to add some great art to your walls? Have any old calendars or books with photos or artwork you enjoy but never actually "use" anymore? Cut out the pictures you like, reframe them in frames you already own and you'll have brand new art collection!

Have a piece of furniture that needs a new lease on life? An easy way to perk up a piece is to give it a new coat of paint or tinted stain. Perk up a new piece with your favorite color and build your room around it. It can be as simple as a metal trash can or as large as a dresser. Have fun with your color choice and be sure to use a primer if the piece already has a coat of paint or stain.

There's a new "diaper bag" in the Cordova household. But this is no ordinary bag, it's the Fisher-Price Deluxe Convertible Diaper Backpack! Super stylish, gender neutral, easy to clean, lots of convenient pockets AND cool looking enough for the Hubster to carry! And isn't that last part the most important of all? Of course it is! Because now you can hand it over to him to carry so you can take your own cute handbag that you haven't been able to use for the past few months because you've had to tote around a diaper bag. That alone is worth getting this one.

It retails for $45, but it's on the Fisher-Price website right now for $34.99. If you want an overview of the deluxe convertible diaper backpack, check out this handy video made by yours truly. More details on the Deluxe Convertible Diaper Backpack from the Fisher-Price website are listed below.

One of my favorite places in Orange County, Pretend City, is having a AAA Road Safety Day tomorrow Saturday, May 19th.

AAA Road Safety Day is presented by the Automobile Club of Southern California. Their guests will have a new way to explore the city by focusing on safe driving. Why? Because it's never too early to help children ensure that they are playing safely in the community and that they understand those important rules which are very important for them to follow for safe play. Through fun activities and new offerings children will enjoy learning safety tips for the road and driving; here’s some of the activities look forward to:

Sensational Story time: Me On The Map - One of the benefits of being an Auto Club member is the opportunity to learn more about traveling! Today their sensational story times will focus on stories that explore a variety of places around the world and traveling.

Plaza Play: City Streets – Every day Pretend City offers a variety of pedal cars for children to drive through the city, including a AAA tow truck. On this day, they will have a special focus on traffic sign/light recognition, directions, and map reading.

Smart Art: Transp-“art”-ation - This smart art activity will combine children’s creativity and a bit of engineering! Children will have the opportunity to use a variety of objects to build their very own cars while learning about safe cars.

When I Grow Up Guest: Police Pals - Police officers play a very important role in ensuring that all citizens in the community are adhering to safe driving practices. Children will have fun experiencing such things as monitoring traffic lights, crosswalks and street signs just like a real police officer.

RSVP: Not required
Fee: Included with museum admission

I recommend any and all Pretend City events, even more so when they release a 2-for-1 coupon like they did for this event! Print out the coupon and receive a FREE entry with the purchae of a child's ticket.

McDonald's likes to celebrate in style and this includes creating signature drinks to toast to their new items success (most recently their Cherry Berry Chiller and the Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal). And you know me, right? I can't keep my mouth shut when I come across something I like so I'm sharing with you the recipe for the Blue Bayou Cocktail they served during an event recently. I'm not entirely sure that I'm allowed to do so, but I'll do it anyway until someone tells me to stop giving away their recipes. Salud!

Blue Bayou Cocktail
Ingredients
2 oz. premium blueberry vodka
4 oz. blueberry and strawberry puree (prepared)
1 oz. honey, lime and thyme simple syrup
2 oz. ginger ale
Ice to fill Collins glass
Sliced strawberry for garnish

Method
Pour ice into Collins glass and add vodka, puree, simple syrup and stir completely and then add your splash of ginger ale. Garnish with strawberry and serve immediately.

PLEASE DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE. Not that YOU would... but I still like to throw that out there.

Two thumbs up for McDonald's, the Cherry Berry Chiller and the Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal #McDFirstTaste

We were in NYC not too long ago to celebrate and taste McDonald's newest treats - the Cherry Berry Chiller and the Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal. As far as the taste goes, both items were tasted by me and since then, they have also been tasted by my family and they get two thumbs up. The Cherry Berry Chiller is a bit too sweet for me, but that's mainly because I'm not used to drinking full-strength juice. The oatmeal comes with a side of walnuts, but those are optional and do not need to mixed in if you don't want them. If you do order the oatmeal and it comes to you a little watery (like mine did), just give it a quick mix and it'll be perfect.

Now I have to tell you, I've put off talking about McDonald's because I have recently realized that there are A LOT of people who just hate McDonald's. I do not like people bashing on me and I figured that talking about McDonald's would probably lead to this. Thinking further, I feel that I should stand up for McDonald's and discuss why I'm a McDonald's mom.

As you know, I am a mother of two and we are a vegetarian family. Even so, we live in a world where my son wants to do what all the other kids do and that includes going to McDonald's, getting a happy meal and playing in their playground. So what do I do? I take him to McDonald's, order him a smoothie (without the yogurt mixed in), a fruit and walnut salad and a toy. I ask the folks at McD's to put it in a Happy Meal bag (or box) and voila, he has his own "happy meal." He's four years old and he knows that he doesn't eat meat and that it makes him different than other kids. Creating for him a happy meal is my way of letting him know that he's not that different and that he can roll with the other kids just fine. He just needs his meals a little customized.

So I am here to tell you that you can have healthy meals at McDonald's. You do not HAVE to consume their fattier products. They are offered because that's what they built their business on, but they have evolved with the times and they offer plenty of healthy options. So if you're worried about the fat in the blueberry banana nut oatmeal, just don't add the nuts and you'll save 4 grams of fat. Getting a smoothie? Skip the yogurt and it makes for an all-fruit smoothie! Get the fruit and yogurt parfait and skip the granola. More fat saved. There are so many different ways to customize their already healthy meals. In the end, McDonald's is more interested in providing you an experience. The fact that they sell food you can feel good about eating is a plus.

I invite you to try their new seasonal items like the Cherry Berry Chiller and the Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal at your local McDonald's. They are delicious, affordable and healthy. You can also save $1 on any size McCafe drink when you print out this coupon.

There are tons more pictures of this very colorful and berry-licious event on our Facebook page. Hop on over and get inspired!

Meanwhile, I'll be working on a post about how you can use this new berry trend in your own life via wardrobe and makeup with help from "professional girlfriend" Bobbie Thomas and make-up artist Rommy Najor.

Celebrating Shoe Week at Westminster Mall (@ShopWestminter)

I was on a clear cut mission last week - spend $50 on shoes for myself and my four year old. My stop? The Westminster Mall.

I step into the Westminster Mall and I head straight to Love D. Love D is this cool little shop with the most vibrant and uniquely-patterned shoes. I have to be honest, their display of shoes on sale along the wall is what attracted me to it in the first place.

I walk in and I'm drawn to the polka-dot heels. Yes, they are as cute as they sound. Take a look:

Then right next to them are these uber-stylish red heels with a zipper embellishment.

I continue to browse the shelves and finally decide that I have to move on because there are so many cute heels that all I want to do is try them on and buy a pair. BUT I was not there to buy heels. I was there to purchase shoes that I could wear all day while carrying an *almost* one year old on my hip.

So we make our way to DSW and on the way there we pass by many, many stores that carry shoes. I'm starting to feel  as though I'm in a HUGE shoe store that is divided into categories (i.e. individual stores). Everywhere I look there are shoes... on sale! Westminster Mall has 11 stores dedicated to just selling shoes. In addition to that, they have department stores like Old Navy, Macy's, Target, JC Penny, The Children's Place, Sears and The Disney Store who also sell shoes. The hardest part was deciding where to stop and try on shoes.

I took loads of pictures because I kept running into cute shoes for both my son and I. I'll shoe you some of my favs and then I'll show you what I ended up buying. Spoiler alert: I stayed within my $50 budget.

Phineas & Ferb, shoes, sneakers, sandals, Payless
Phineas and Ferb shoe collection - Slip-ons ($19.99), Sandals ($12.99), Sneakers ($24.99)
Sneakers for boys ($19.94)
Stay on top of trends with these color-blocked heels
Shoes for babies!
Classic shoes for men ($24.94)
Girls sandals ($10)
And now for the big reveal... we almost went with one of the Phineas and Ferb shoes at Payless, but decided that they were a bit too expensive. So the four year old settled on these from Target. Total: $16.99.

I also went the cheaper route and found these Charles David sandals in the awesome clearance rack at DSW. Total: $25.84.

We had enough money left over to buy accessories for my boy at Hot Topic. We spend hours at Westminster Mall but left very happy with our purchases.

So tell me, what is your usual shoe shopping style? Do you go to a mall and browse all the shops until you find something you like, or do you have a specific go-to store?
