Here are some interesting facts - according to a White Paper The State of the Hispanic Caregiver just released by medical supplier resource company Comfort Plus, there are roughly 4,000,000 Hispanics over the age of 65 in the U.S. By 2050, elderly Hispanics share will almost triple to 17 percent from 6 percent in 2005. The report hones in on the role of Hispanic caregivers who on average are significantly younger than their non-Hispanic counterparts. Yup. This will describe us in a few years. Though, thankfully, our moms are still healthy and living on their own, the Hubster and I have already begun discussing our future living situations as they will pertain to our parents. Our discussion ties into this fact:
"Hispanic caregivers are much more likely to live with children or grandchildren (48% compared to 32% non-Hispanics), but they tend to report the most stress factors from caregiving."
I couldn't imagine our parents not living with us (or with another family member) when it gets to the point where they need some extra help. It would just be too weird. Neither one of us see a nursing home as an option for our parents in the future so we're slowly educating ourselves about caregiving, new products out there for the elderly folk and any tips that other caregivers may have. As it so happens, what we often wonder about is what others wonder about too. Here are a few of our questions and concerns:
The White Paper referenced above addresses the fact that 9 out of 10 caregivers interviewed cited that they need more information on a variety of caregiver topics, and managing incontinence issues was a top concern.
As a child, I remember my mom having to purchase products to help manage incontinence issues with my Nana and shipping them to Mexico because they are just so much more expensive over there. Though my mom hopes that it will never have to be like that with her, the truth is that I really should be educating myself on what's out there and how it's not something to be ashamed of. It's natural. It's life. And better to be prepared, right?
I'm happy to see companies like Comfort Plus, a retailer that promotes Tranquility products, who are making an effort to assist caregivers with resources, tips and help with connecting them to incontinence products they may need. They take their responsibility a step further with their newly revamped website (www.comfortplusonline.com). It has a dedicated Spanish-language section, “Comfort Plus Para Ti” that provides bilingual access to resources for Hispanic caregivers while helping users find the correct caregiver and incontinence products they need. Very thoughtful, que no? I mean, sure, they promote their own Tranquility products - but that's only because they stand by their product. And if you're currently in the market for incontinence products, please consider Tranquility products.
- Tranquility products are the most absorbent products on the market. For that reason, they require fewer changes and permit lasting comfort.
- Tranquility products provide unsurpassed skin dryness, odor elimination, and leakage protection.
- Tranquility products save money for the user due to their efficiency.
- Tranquility products require fewer changes due to their superior absorbency. This makes the user more comfortable and requires less work from the caregiver.
I urge you to connect with Comfort Plus via their social sites and their website. If you're currently in a position where your need to purchase incontinence products for your loved one or just want to learn more about what your responsibilities will be as a caregiver, please take a second and engage with them online. The White Paper is also full of interesting facts, resources and all kinds of statistics. If nothing else, it's a really interesting read.
