There are many things that we wish for our children when they are born. We wish for them to be happy, healthy and a contributing member to society. As a mami, I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders every day as I ensure that my kids grow up fulfilling these requirements. Of course, if they grow up to be Olympians, well that's not so bad either.
My youngest (at 4.5 years) is starting soccer in the Fall and I'll be the proud mami yelling from the side lines. Yes, I'm going to be THAT mom. The one that can't sit her butt down, the one practicing with him... the one finally learning the rules to the game since I have yet to play a soccer game myself. The hubster will be back in school during the soccer season so it will fall to me to ensure that he goes to practices, gets enough sleep and doesn't feel defeated when he loses a game (even if he kicks the winning goal to the wrong net). My ultimate goal? To get him to the Olympics. Reach for the stars, right?
Regardless of what happens, I will cheer for my boys to do their best. When my oldest did karate I was the mom in the minivan (cliche much?) doing the karate yells and teaching him how to block while we waited at the red stop lights. I'll do whatever I can to empower my kids and help them feel like they have the power to be as good as they want to be. Even if mami wasn't much of a sports player, that doesn't mean that they can't be. I'm hoping the sports gene got passed down from the Hubster. Otherwise, we're in trouble.
Procter & Gamble has recently launched a campaign, "Thank You, Mom" and as part of the campaign, I was given the opportunity to be on a call where questions were submitted and answered by Ondina Lopez... super mom to her wonderful kids who just happen to be hopeful-Olympians!
Ondina Lopez has done what any good mami does for her children to encourage them to pursue their dreams. Though they were a one-car family, they still managed to get their kids to practice, sometimes twice a day! Ondina turned on the dryer to heat up the garage so the kids could practice. During the summer she brought them cold ice drinks to keep them hydrated. She ensured that they always kept up with school work and never once pressured them to stay in the sport.
So what part does P&G play in this? Well Crest and Oral-B Complete help give Taekwondo fighter Steven López (Ondina's son) the confidence to show off his healthy, winning smile that he'll be using this Summer.
Steven López, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and bronze medalist will be competing in the 80kg division at this year’s Games. Crest and Oral-B Complete have extended their partnership with Steven to include Steven’s mother, Ondina López, highlighting the importance mom’s support can play in an athlete’s success.
