Pretend City has been known to provide 2 for 1 coupons from time to time. But never a 2 for 1 coupon that can be used all week long! In an effort to support bridge learning, Pretend City has released a 2 for 1 coupon that is good June 18 - June 22.

And if you're wondering how you'll conquer summer learning, read on for some tips from Linda Hunter, Senior Director of Education at Pretend City.

A FAMILY RESOURCE: BRIDGE THE GAP THIS SUMMER
Linda Hunter, Senior Director of Education at Pretend City, Shares with Parents How Bridge Learning Will Keep Your Child’s Skills Sharp When School is Out of Session

School is out, or will be very soon, and there’s a smile on every child’s face as they likely anticipate a summer of fun and freedom. However, as a parent, do you find yourself wondering if there’s something you should be doing so that your child doesn’t fall behind? Statistics show that children can loose an average of 2.6 months worth of knowledge over an average summer. This is why bridge learning is important. Bridging regular curriculum during the school year, with fun experiences over the summer months keeps your child on track academically and just might foster a new motivation to learn more!

There are many different opportunities parents can utilize to assure that their children continue to learn over the summer months, and I’m not talking about continued academic classes! Let your children feel like they are still on that well-deserved summer vacation, and web the skills they practice in school (math, science, reading) into a “cool” summer project of their choosing. Talk to them about what they are interested in and find their current passion. Suggest ideas for a fun project that will foster their passion and help them learn more about it. This is the simplest and most effective way to assure that your child will stay challenged and stimulated when out of the classroom.

For example, if you’re at Pretend City and your child walks into the grocery store, do they say that they’d like to buy the store and run it themselves? That deserves some research and imaginative thinking about how to get the money to buy it and what to do to make it profitable. Or maybe they are passionate about cartooning. Could they imagine some unique characters and experiment with colors and interesting stories to create their own superhero comic book? Listen to your child and work with them to build on their own interests. Have they always wanted a vegetable garden or tree house in the backyard? Does your child’s interest in space mean they’d have fun building a model rocket ship? Help them pick a project they can tackle all summer long and be willing to lend some support. They’ll have a blast reading books or going online to do research, and experimenting and engineering solutions. And once the summer is over they’ll have a completed project that they have learned a great deal from and can take pride in.

The beauty of a child taking on their own project is that it is child-driven, which is completely self-motivating. By its own nature, it’s going to be an interesting learning experience for your child as he or she wonders, experiments, designs, engineers and accomplishes. There’s a lot of emphasis on the importance of STEM learning right now. Consider that when a child takes on their own project, they are actively engaging in the scientific process! They’re observing, hypothesizing, risking, experimenting and adjusting their hypothesis along the way to find the answers and reach their end goal. It’s not necessarily learning a subject, but they’ll develop and use STEM-related learning throughout the process of completing their project, and that is much more valuable. This is bridge learning at its best. Important learning that can easily and naturally happen over the summer with your child. Try it and watch your child blossom! You may just learn a thing or two in the process as well.

How to Cut a Round Cake

$
0
0

My son had this marvelous round cake on his first birthday at Pretend City. Now let me tell you, this cake was HUGE. It was meant to serve 40, but it could have honestly served at least 60.

When the gals went to cut it I was surprised to see them stick the knife near the center of the cake and instead of going down to the edge of the cake, they continued to cut it in a circular form.

Until it looked like a cake within a cake. Then they just sliced from the rim of the "inside" cake outward.

As it turns out, cutting a round cake this way makes it way easier to serve the pieces! Each piece was the same size, it didn't break when it was served and the leftover cake (which for us was the "middle") was easy to take home because it was basically just a smaller cake!

Live and learn! It was such a great tip and I know I'll be using it from here on.

Celebrating my son's first birthday at Pretend City (@PretendCity) #PretendCityBday

We had the best time at my son's birthday party. Now that is something that I can't usually say without adding... "but it was so much work!" His party at Pretend City was the EASIEST party that I have ever hosted. How easy? Well we arranged for the Pretend City experience with the Pretend City events organizer, chose out the birthday cake flavors and then we picked up breakfast food the day of. Aside from that we made up goodie bags and that.was.it. Seriously.

We had my son's first birthday party scheduled for 10 a.m. We arrived around  9:30 a.m. and the tables were all ready to go. As was the whiteboard with Happy Birthday Lucas! written on it and birthday presents were hanging from the ceiling. The gals helping with the party were ready to bring our food in with their cart and they assisted A LOT in setting out the food, making coffee, bringing out the utensils - everything. They were super nice and seasoned party hosts because they were able to anticipate the needs of the guests and even had party music ready to play.

We set out the food and the party was ready to begin by 10 a.m. The hosts also set up a table for a party hat activity and the kids were able to each make one during the duration of the event. It was a great activity for the kids because we had 'em ranging from 1 year to 14 years. Each kid took the time to make theirs extra special and it made for a great group picture in the end.

Pretend City birthday party hat activity

I'll tell you something though. When I read that we had the party room for only one hour and I thought that it wouldn't be enough time. I'm eating my words right now. One hour was plenty of time. We ate, made a party hat, distributed goodie bags, had cake, wrote on the whiteboard and still had time to socialize. Plus, it was super difficult to keep the kids in the room. They all wanted to run out an play at Pretend City! It was many of our guests first time there and they couldn't get out and play. The ones that had been there before already knew how much fun it was so they wanted to go out and play just as much as everyone else.

Our goodie bags consisted of some trinkets like stickers, a crazy straw, toys, mints and something super special - a return pass to Pretend City. The return passes are included in all of the Pretend City birthday packages without an extra charge. What a treat!

In the midst of all the excitement I learned something new - how to cut a round cake. The hubster thinks I'm loca for getting so worked up by the lesson I learned but it's one of those things that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

And while we're on the subject of cake can I just take a second and tell you just how delicious the cake was? Seriously delicioso. We chose a white cake with cookies and cream filling (a compromise between the hubster and I). When we got there, the delicious cake was sitting on the table looking so good and I couldn't get over how special and huge it was. I was sure the crazy kids would try to swipe a lick of the frosting but thankfully they didn't.

The cake bakers add the Pretend City map to the top of the cake and then decorate it with fondant-made buildings and frosting all the way around then top it off with a sign that is customized with the child's name. This cake was made to serve 40 buy I can tell you that it can very easily serve at least 60. The cake was a HUGE hit with everyone. Moist, not to sweet and melted in your mouth. *drool*

At 11 o'clock everyone lined up at the door, got their Pretend City map and timecard and walked out of there to spend the rest of their day visiting the museum and making memories of their own. Meanwhile, the Pretend City crew stayed behind and cleaned up the room and reset it for the next party. By the way, the party that showed up after us went crazy with their pirate theme. I mean they had it all. Personalized cups, a treasure chest, catered lunch - the works! It made me the tiniest bit guilty for not going all out. Maybe next year?

We had a super time at my son's birthday party (in case you couldn't already tell). We collected books in lieu of birthday gifts in an effort to give back a little to Pretend City for the wonderful time that we had. One of our guests even gifted a donation to Pretend City in my son's name! Way sweet.

I highly, highly recommend checking out Pretend City if you're in the Southern California area. It's a GREAT place to host a birthday party, gather with other mom's for a play date, or just take the kids for an adventure. I did the pure minimum for my son's party because I honestly wanted to see just how little I could do and get away with. Apparently, I could do very little and still make memories that will last a lifetime. Our guests talked about the event for days after and I'm happy knowing that they will return to Pretend City with their guest passes.

You know how sometimes a light bulb goes off in your head and you say, "wouldn't it be great if..."? Well, the IceHuggy is what happens when you have a thought like that and then you take it a step further.

The IceHuggy is an insulated sleeve designed for frozen ice treats, yogurt pops, electrolyte pops, bolis and sore throat coolers. It's like one of those koozies, but for kids and definitely one of those things that you'll use until it falls apart.

Besides keeping fingers from freezing, the IceHuggy allows you to save on paper towels and it transforms using the "Flip-Fold'-Fasten" feature to accommodate different sized treats. The stretchy fabric allows IceHuggy to stretch and fit the different widths of freeze pops and yogurt sticks. It also acts like a sponge, so when the little one leaves his freeze pop on the coffee table it soaks it right up for easy cleaning! This last feature I haven't tried because my son always manages to finish his treat before it gets to melting point.

IceHuggy packages come in twos in either orange or green. They are available on the IceHuggy website for only $6.99 a pack! The price point is perfect for the frugal and green mami. It gets better though. From now until July 12, 2012, you can use code ALLYOU20 and get 20% off your purchase! That means you can get a pack of two IceHuggy's for only $5.59 (before shipping) via their online store.

Keeping your skin beautiful and smooth all #Summer. Tips courtesy of @Dove.

Below are a few tips from beauty expert Jenn Falik on how you can keep your skin looking and feeling beautiful and smooth all Summer long!

Keep hot showers short and sweet. Steaming hot water can really dry out your skin, so convince yourself to enjoy a slightly lukewarm temperature and buy yourself an extra 2 or 3 minutes of blissful bathing.

Pesky dry elbows? Take a lemon, cut it in half, and lay each half face up on a flat surface. Then, sink your elbows into them. After about 20 seconds, your dry skin will disappear. Added bonus - the subtle citrus fresh scent lingers.

Be patient. Pat your moisturizer into your skin instead of rubbing it on (better absorption, less tugging on the skin) and give it a good minute to soak into the skin before you move onto the next step of your make up routine.

Make a difference. Sleeveless season is upon us, so opt for a body wash that will make an actual difference in the way you skin looks - like Dove® Visible Care™ Body Wash. This way, beautiful skin becomes part of your daily shower routine - simple and efficient, two of my favorite words when it comes to beauty.

Lastly, if you haven't already - don't forget to head to Dove®'s Facebook page (http://on.fb.me/DoveShowUsYourSkin) where you can keep tabs on their largest campaign to date featuring real women.

This is not a sponsored post. I received a bottle of  Dove® Visible Care™ Body Wash to use (I haven't yet, but will soon!)

About Pitch Perfect
Starring: Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, Rebel Wilson, Alexis Knapp, Adam DeVine, Freddie Stroma

Beca (Anna Kendrick) is that girl who’d rather listen to what’s coming out of her headphones than what’s coming out of you. Arriving at her new college, she finds herself not right for any clique but somehow is muscled into one that she never would have picked on her own: alongside mean girls, sweet girls and weird girls whose only thing in common is how good they sound when they sing together, in the new out-loud comedy Pitch Perfect.

When Beca takes this acoustic singing group out of their world of traditional arrangements and perfect harmonies into all-new mash-ups, they fight to climb their way to the top of the cutthroat world of college acappella. This could wind up either the coolest thing they’ll ever do or the most insane, and it will probably be a little of both.

Loaded with new takes on old favorites to hits of right now that are seamlessly mixed together, mashed-up and arranged like you’ve never heard before, Pitch Perfect is directed by Jason Moore, who opened our eyes to the very misbehaved life of puppets in the surprise Broadway sensation Avenue Q.

"Babied" and "cutesy" words - what are yours?

$
0
0
The other day I was at the McDonald's playground and this mom sat next to me while her kids played. A few minutes later one of her kids comes up to her and the mom says to the kid, "Do want munchie munchie?" First off, I literally spit up my coffee because it sounded hilarious. The word itself, "munchie" is funny but she said it in such a serious non-joking manner that it made it even funnier. Thankfully she didn't see me and I really didn't mean to be rude.

So anyway, it got me to thinking of what words I had "babied" or "cutesied" for my kids. The one that came to mind was "socks". When my four year old was younger we would call them "sockies". I don't know why, we just did. We also said "night-night" instead of "sleep".

And as long as we're sharing baby talk, I'm going to call my mom out with her "wipies" instead of "wipes" and my mother-in-law with "mimi" for "sleep". I'm also pretty sure that most parents have words they have babied or made cutesy for their kids even though it's recommended that parents skip on the baby talk. However, it's also been proven that parents don't listen to every study out there. So in the spirit of open-parent dialogue I want to know - what words do you baby or make cute for your kids? Are you a parent that says, "choo-choo train", "boo-boo" or "ouchie"?

p.s. There is no judging here and I promise I won't laugh.

We had Father's Day lunch at my mom's and I was once again reminded that the cooking gene did not rub off on me. Going to my mom's for a meal is a big deal at our home because of the fact that I cannot recreate the dishes she makes. My mom never fails to nail a great lunch. Case in point - father's day lunch.

Menu
Jamaica (Hibiscus Tea)
Roasted Salsa
Bean Gorditas with Queso Fresco
Lasagna Roll-Ups with Alfredo Sauce
Bean Soup with Greens
Pasta Salad (made by mother-in-law)

We finished off our meal with coconut cream pie and a delicious danish cake from Sprouts. Everything was so good and it ended up being my only meal of the day.

So what about you? Did you have/make anything special for Father's Day?

If there is one quote that I live by, it's this one. I heard this quote a long, long time ago and it is the reason why I am afraid of being stupid. So I read, I listen and I learn in order to avoid it. I am forever learning new things and gaining new skills because I want to know as much as I can possibly know in my short life here on Earth. I don't want to be stupid, because quite simply, I don't want my life to be any harder.

So tell me, what quote do you live by?

I had the opportunity last week to attend a not-so-old-fashioned ice cream social with my oldest kid where we had the opportunity to try out all sorts of ice cream goodies. I, of course, took loads of pictures and even received the recipe for us to re-create the goodies at home! Never one to hold on to the good stuff, I'm posting them here for you to try out as well. They are SUPER easy to make and taste absolutely devine.

Here's the second of three recipes we tried out at last week's not-so-old-fashioned ice cream social.

This one we kind of altered the recipe when we recreated it at home over the weekend. We put them into bowls, instead of cups rendering them as more of a layered ice cream bowl type of thing instead of pops because honestly, the pops were kind of messy to eat. We also did not have peanut brittle so we switched it out for toffee bits. And the chocolate ice cream? Well we switched that out for rocky road ice cream instead. It was still a delicious treat, juts a little bit more customized to our taste and needs (we have a child that isn't into getting his clothes dirty).
