Frugal Friday: Feelin’ a little beachy (featuring So. Cal. beaches)

$

It’s mid- summer and with school starting soon, this is a great time to be sure the kids get in some beach play. It can also be the perfect place for a romantic walk with your significant other while the kids explore ahead.

When we go to the beach, we seek out an interesting place where we can avoid crowds and park cheaply or free as well. Our favorite beaches in SoCal are Little Corona and the secluded coves below Heisler Park in Laguna Beach. My son LOVES tidepools, which these beaches have, plus the waves tend to be family-friendly sizes.

You can see this:

Or this:

Or this:

Without having to shell out the clams to go to an aquarium.

Most beach areas have at least some free street parking. You just need to find it. Free street parking can be had near Little Corona along Ocean Blvd and the adjacent residential areas, though it is a tight squeeze on weekends. Laguna has very limited street parking along Cliff Drive; most coastal parking near Heisler Park and Main Beach is metered at $2 an hour (bring quarters or credit cards). If you’re willing to take a little jaunt (and get some exercise in the bargain) metered parking in the shopping areas near Main Beach in Laguna runs $1/hr. You might even find a rare non-metered area.

Crystal Cove has even more stunning tidepools, plus great hiking trails, but street parking is severely limited and far away. If you have $15 (per car) for lot parking and plan to spend several hours, it’s totally worth it. Keep in mind, the tidepools are a designated Marine Reserve area. Don’t remove any animals or shells from the area, and wear shoes- the rocks are sharp. Please step carefully to avoid squishing anything. Check low tide times for the best viewing experience.

Things to remember when you head out for your day of frolic:
  • Sunscreen. apply before you even leave the house. Reapply often. Coppertone Water Babies is one of my go-to sunscreens- it stays on well, plus it comes in a range of different SPF’s (also, my son seems to have a crush on the Coppertone girl). Load up on samples when you can- free, and easy to bring to the beach.
  • Sand toys. don’t buy expensive packs of them. Hit up the dollar store (or better yet, the thrift store) for the uber-cheapies. If they get broken or lost, you probably won’t care. I bought a bag of 25 from our local Lutheran thrift for $1.00. And good thing- the first thing my four-year-old did was bury a few. Good thing I’m an anthropologist. You can also bring things like empty plastic yogurt containers in various sizes and shapes- perfect for little hands, and then rather than rinse, just toss them in the nearest recycling bin when you’re done.
  • Baby powder, talcum powder, or cornstarch. use it whisk away all that sand stuck to skin! Sprinkle it on all the sand-covered spots and then use a towel to wipe it all off. The sand should come off much more easily.
  • Towels. lots of towels. Because, they will get really, really sandy.
  • Pack water and light snacks. Think individually wrapped go-gurt, string cheese, granola bars (hold by the wrappers to keep the sand off) and fruit.
  • Pack light. Water, sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, and towels, all in a backpack.
  • Shoes. If you can find some cheap (but good) water shoes, get them. They’ll protect little feet from the hot sand (because can you carry all your stuff AND a 45 pound preschooler?) and any sharp shells, glass, or rocks.
One final thought- make sure an adult or responsible teen is a designated water-watcher. Even if the kids are just wading around, a sudden wave could knock them over. Better yet, go in the water with them. One of my best memories is my dad taking me through the waves in Santa Monica. He’d have me piggyback, I’d hang onto his neck, then he’d grab my feet tightly, and off we’d go. Pure summer fun.

Have a super time!

Celebrate August Coffee Month with a “La hora del Cafecito” Giveaway by Nescafé Clásico

I'm sitting here enjoying my own cup of Nescafé Clásico (no cream or sugar for me) as I read the survey findings from Nescafé Clásico's “La Hora del Cafecito” (The Coffee Hour). Pour yourself a cup and read with me. These fun finds are interesting whether or not your Hispanic!

Cafe con pan

Nescafé’s “La Hora del Cafecito” survey

Just in time to celebrate August Coffee Month, Nescafé’s “La Hora del Cafecito” survey finds that beyond the physical effects, taking a moment to enjoy a cup of coffee allows you to reflect, relax, and take a step back from a busy work day.

Tasty Tranquility
While many non-Hispanics might say that coffee helps wake them up in the morning, for Latinos, coffee means calm. Relaxation (65 percent), comfort (53 percent), and stress-release (40 percent) are the top three coffee time expectations for coffee drinkers, beating out the caffeine buzz (38 percent) most associate with the drink.

A Break in the Day
Taking a smoke break (13 percent), dressing formally (29 percent), and taking an hour-long lunch (48 percent) are no longer the norm for working Latino-Americans. However, one traditional aspect of the workplace survives: the coffee break. Over half (56 percent) of working Hispanic consumers regularly take a coffee break as part of their work day.

A Cup to Catch Up
While serving coffee may signify the end of a meal for some families, for U.S. Latinos breaking out the coffee means the conversation is getting good. In fact, the survey found that most end a coffee date knowing more about their loved ones. Top coffee happenings include learning something new about a family member (48 percent), hearing exciting news from a friend (47 percent), telling friends or family important news (44 percent), and planning for the future with friends or family members (40 percent).

Morning Time is Mine
Don’t talk to the coffee lover in your life while they’re drinking their morning joe. Sixty-eight (68) percent of coffee drinkers view their morning cup as “me time,” rather than time to catch up with family and friends.

Wake Up and Smell the Coffee
Don’t underestimate the importance of these coffee time benefits. More than 1 in 3 (35 percent) coffee drinkers think going without coffee would be worse than not getting enough sleep.

The Nescafé La Hora del Cafecito survey was conducted by Wakefield Research among 1001 Hispanic Consumers ages 18+ in May 2012.

Reading these survey finds is like reading my thoughts and feelings. I'm not kidding you. They pegged me just right.

Whether or not you're Hispanic I invite you to enter this fantabulous giveaway - a very trendy, useful and sturdy bag filled with Nescafé goodies.

Demi Lovato wears Hallmark Text Bands. Jump on the bandwagon and enter the giveaway!

Last month I had the extreme pleasure to take two young girls to see the Demi Lovato concert in Los Angeles at the Greek Theatre. They had a SUPER time and I had quite a bit of fun myself. How much? Well I'm totally rocking out to Demi Lovato right now! I purchased her newest album online. Seeing as how Justin Bieber is also on my playlist, well let's just say I'm somewhere between a tween and being too old to listen to this kind of music.

Before the concert we had the opportunity to preview Hallmark's newest product - Text Bands. If you have kids going back to school, put it on the list. Seriously.

Text Bands are these super easy to use and uber-trendy wrist accessories that allow you to exchange text messages (up to 10 characters/message) with others by simply bumping the Text Bands with the other person. You can use numbers, letters and symbols in your messages (I'm hearing English teachers everywhere cringe right now). And don't worry, all text bands have a bad word filter.

So the way it works is you create a message on your text band. When you see someone who has a Text Band, you can do high-fives, bump fists, touch Text Bands or anything like that and the message that you programmed into your text band, and that which they programmed into their Text Band, will exchange. The Text Bands allow for a total of 24 messages to be stored at one time. You can re-program your textband message as many times as you'd like.

Text Bands are made of flexible plastic and the gadget itself comes out of the band so the battery can be replaced. Trust me, your tweens and teens are going to be all over these - just like these girls (ages 11 and 14):

Text Band starter kits are available at Hallmark Gold Crown stores nationwide for only $14.99, plus tax. Each Text Band starter kit includes one style band and one texting module. The style bands are sold separately for $4.99, plus tax.

Hallmark Text Bands has a great FAQ page (TextBands.com/EZAnswers) that can help answer any questions you may have. There's even a parent-centered section!

By the way, I have a ton of pictures from the Demi Lovato concert on our Google+ page and videos on our YouTube channel if your kid (or you) is into her. Nick Jonas and Madison de la Garza (her little sis) made surprise appearances. I was a part of the mamis who covered their ears because it got THAT loud in there. All the kids went nuts went they came out!

And now you, cool parent/uncle/aunt/grandma etc., can enter to win one of two Hallmark Text Bands sets!

Ultimate Comfort & Harmony Nursing Pillow Giveaway

As a first time mom, I didn't buy into all the gimmicky or special-looking baby items that seem to be MUST-HAVES in most mom's lists. Nope. For me it was like, the less, the better. I wanted a low-key baby house. However, I found myself heading to Target soon after the baby was born for a nursing pillow. Yes, a nursing pillow was one of my must-haves. I used that puppy every single day. From taking pictures during the first week to keep his head propped up to helping the baby sit up as he got older. Obviously, I also used it for tummy time and even for nursing (who would have thought, right?). So now I am jumping for joy that I get to host a mombo from Comfort & Harmony nursing pillow giveaway to celebrate August - National Breast Feeding Awareness Month.

Trailer Thursday - The Campaign (in theaters 8/10)

The Campaign is on our must-see list before the summer is over. I mean, how can it fail? It stars Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis and features other stars including: Jason Sudeikis, Katherine LaNasa, Dylan McDermott, John Lithgow, Dan Aykroyd and others. Is this on your list too?

About The Campaign
When long-term Congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of unscrupulous power brokers plots to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naïve Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center.

At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice but, with the help of his new benefactors’ support and a cutthroat campaign manager, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about.

As Election Day closes in, the two are locked in a dead heat, with insults quickly escalating to injury until all they care about is burying each other. It’s a mud-slinging, backstabbing, home-wrecking comedy from “Meet the Parents” director Jay Roach that takes today’s political circus to its logical next level. Because, even if you believe campaign ethics have hit rock bottom…there’s still room to dig a whole lot deeper.

The Campaign is rated R for crude sexual content, language and brief nudity.

I had a "dumb" phone for the longest time until I FINALLY upgraded to a smart phone and now it's my life line. I'm lost without it close to me. I don't play games on it. Nope, I'm addicted to sharing and being a chismosa (gossip) on it. So it's not a big jump to be one of the lucky few to be participating in the Net10 Wireless "Test Drive" campaign. They've obviously seen me on my phone.

I use my phone for everything. Nearest restroom? Got it! Am I paying the lowest price on diapers? Done! What am I having for lunch? So 30 seconds ago. My addiction is so apparent that my kid waits until I take pictures to touch his food. If you're like me, or have tween and teens that are as bad as me, then you're going to want to hear more about Net10 Wireless.

Avocado Recipes I Want My Child To Love #ILoveAvocados

I have a love for avocados (especially avocados from Mexico). I could eat them morning, day and night if I had them available. I love 'em on eggs, with tortillas and queso fresco, on a tostada with cotija cheese and my new favorite avocado recipe - as the main ingredient in my mom's Salsa de Aguacate (Avocado Salsa).

There aren't many of my mom's recipes that I can duplicate and know that it's going to come out just like she makes it. This one, however, is a #NoFail recipe. I love the simplicity of the recipe and how easily it can be duplicated, multiplied, divided, etc.

First up are the ingredients: jalapeños, tomatillo, cilantro, salt, lemon (not pictured), water and avocado.

Chop up everything coarsely (except for the lemon), toss in the blender with a couple of tablespoons of water, season with lemon and salt and voila! You just made the easiest and tastiest avocado salsa.

Ingredients
1 Tomatillo
3 Jalapeños
1/4 c. Cilantro
1/2 Avocado (pitted)
4 tbsp. water
Lemon and salt to taste

Preparation
1. Coarsely chop tomatillo and jalapeños.
2. Add tomatillo, jalapeño, cilantro, water and avocado into blender.
3. Blend
4. Add lemon and salt to taste

This recipe is so easy I believe it should be a staple in everyone's recipe book. So much so that I entered it on Avocado from Mexico's website. If you have a favorite avocado recipe, I suggest you do the same!

This is a sponsored post on behalf of Avocado from Mexico and LBC. All thoughts and opinions remain my own.

Back to School shopping at The Children's Place

Back-to-School shopping is in full effect and if you haven't finished started, then I strongly suggest you give The Children's Place a visit... SOON!

The Children's Place has you covered whether or not your kid wears uniforms to school. If they don't wear uniforms, then The Children's Place has all the hot trends for your kids. If they do, well TCP has all their uniforms up to 30% off. Win-win.

Girl Trends

girl trends 2013

It's all about sparkles and boho chic. Yup. The Children's Place is your go-to shop for boho chic, girly style! This is definitely my favorite style and I'm head over heels in love with the fur vests, fringe boots and fringe bags. So cool!

TCP also carries diva-approved fedoras and matching handbags in animal prints, glittery sneakers and brightly colored jeans.

Boy Trends

Boy clothing trends 2013

Boys are a little more tame, but they have a lot to play with since layers are trending right now. Layer a plaid print with a print tee and you're workin' the trend! Rugby is also big for boys. The Children's Place has these cool tops that have a faux second layer. Stay cool, but still carry the style.

I have two boys, and my oldest seems to be very fashion forward. He scored a fabulous plaid fedora for only $10.36 thanks to my 20% off coupon.

Our splurge was these these pair of hi-top sneakers with a skull image on them

They are listed as $24.95 and after the 20% discount they were $19.96. These were a splurge because 1) I DO NOT spend more than $10 on shoes for my kids and 2) these are his fourth pair of sneakers in under a month. We fell in love with the skull in front of the shoe and he has worn them every single day since we bought them. I hope he wears them until they have holes in them and are completely falling apart.

The Children's Place is currently having a lot of great deals and steals. I strongly suggest you go online and sign up for their mailing list to get your coupons in the mail. Use these coupons and stack them with the sales already in place! That's how I saved an extra $23.10 on this shopping trip. I purchased 14 items and it was under $100... after taxes! Take a look at my entire purchase:

This is not a sponsored post. I did, however, receive a tour of The Children's Place (Farmers Market location in LA), discuss new trends with TCP reps and was given the opportunity to shop their new Fall styles, complimentary. As always, all thoughts and opinions remain my own because those are not for sale.

Master Lock and the Master Combo Challenge

$

I remember going into junior high the highlight of my back-to-school shopping trip was the school supplies. We bought the usual pens, papers, 1 inch folders, etc., but this time there was something different that was asked from us - a combination lock.

Remember the combo locks that you had to buy for school? In our school we each had to have one to use on our lockers. I played volleyball for years so I loved to have one that was brightly colored so I could enjoy it every time I opened up my locker. The only thing I had to remember was to close it and turn it to zero when the day was over. Nowadays, kids have A LOT more to worry about being stolen... laptops, phones, iPads, iPhones, their identity! So much more.

I think the best thing that a student can do is to keep their goodies with them. If you HAVE to take them to school (and I do know that some schools require electronics like laptops), always keep them near you. Don't leave them on the table for your friends to take care of while you go get another bag of chips, or leave them in the classroom while you go take a potty break. Take them with you!

If you're using your laptops at school (or anywhere else that is public), I strongly suggest you check out Master Lock's newest accessories like the laptop computer lock. I have heard many stories of people getting their laptops stolen by people who ran by them and grabbed the laptops. So not cool, BUT, if you have yours attached to something like the Master Lock SafeSpace Laptop Computer Lock ($24.99), you can bet that he/she won't get far.

Master Combo Challenge
Did you know that young adults are exposed to identity theft and other forms of security threats more than people of any other age? Master Lock® does and they have launched “The Master Combo Challenge,” an interactive game accessible through the company’s Facebook page, to help combat this. Students and their parents can play the game and not only discover tips on how to stay safe at school, but the best products that will keep their possessions secure. The “Master Combo Challenge” also offers parents and their students a chance to win back-to-campus-themed prizes, including the new Set-Your-Own Combination SafeSpace™ Laptop Computer Lock. Play the game here ( FB.com/MasterLock) and ensure that a safe, secure, and successful school year lies ahead for both you and your children!

Book Review: Chemorella by Katy Franco

I’d bet that just about every one of us knows someone affected by cancer. It might be a friend, a family member, or even ourselves. In Chemorella, Katy Franco and co-author/husband Ken Phillips give what can be a life-threatening medical issue a lighter look. Franco herself is a breast cancer survivor, and turned her real-life experiences into this book, as well as a one-woman comedy show. The book is heartfelt, funny, and cute, while giving a good story. The fact that it is bilingual makes it even more appealing, and the illustrations are done in an animated, colorful style that really draws the eye.

Chemorella is, of course, ‘Rella with a twist. This spin on the classic has our heroine living a kind, giving, and outgoing lifestyle, and she has many friends (except for her three evil roommates). Once diagnosed, life changes quite a bit, as she struggles to remain positive through all the difficulties of dealing with cancer treatments, particularly chemotherapy and the loss of her hair, and her terrible roommates make it no easier.

One night, an upstairs neighbor gives her a ticket to attend a charity dinner. She puts on a wig, a gorgeous dress, and her boogie sneakers, and heads off into the night. At the event, she meets a handsome singer formerly known as…anyway, she meets the guy. They dance and have a wonderful time until disaster strikes. Managing to get through the terribly depressing month after, she carries on with grace, humor, and the love of her friends. Now cancer-free, she begins designing tennis shoes, which eventually leads to her own happy ending.

For me, this book hit home, as we just had a close family member pass away from pancreatic cancer. The cancer –and eventual outcome- was different, but the struggles were similar. I read this book with my son (an extremely precocious “almost” 5-year-old), hoping it might help him understand more about cancer. It was a cute story and he enjoyed it, but it was a bit above his level. I would not classify this as a childrens book. I would recommend it to teens and young adults, or for anyone that might need some positive encouragement while dealing with serious illness.

Ken and Katy each write heartfelt afterwords that sum up Katy’s personal story from two perspectives. I enjoyed the book, but I think I enjoyed these more- hearing what came from the heart really tied everything together. “Chemorella” is a delightful story that makes a good point- it’s not what life brings you, it’s what you do with it that matters.

Catch TheBreastYearsOfMyLife.com, Katy's one-woman show set on August 20 at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood!  This will be the US premiere; she did it in Spanish in Puerto Rico for several years!

Back-to-School shopping is still in full effect. It was apparent EVERYWHERE we went while we strolled through the Westminster Mall. It seems like every store had a back-to-school sale, or items on sale that we could use this fall - like hand sanitizers (and lots of it).

Places like Bath & Body Works have their anti-bacterial hand soaps on sale - which would also make great teacher's gifts. My favorite store at the mall, Tokyo Japanese Lifestyle, has school supplies - with a twist. They all hail from Japan and they are super affordable (just take a look at the erasers in the pic above). And it seemed like shoes were on sale everywhere we went. Payless Shoe Source had Airwalks on sale for $19.99 and DSW has their usual clearance racks at the back of the store full of great brand-name shoes. My fav were these Spider-man sneakers that my kid found. A little over my budget, but so worth it if your kid is looking to make a statement with his shoes.

In the end, my best score was finding an outfit for my kid to wear to soccer practice. I found it at Old Navy and both items were on clearance. The best part is that these pieces of clothing have UPF 50 built in, they are super soft and the shirt is tagless and has moisture-wicking.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green Event Recap, Movie Review and a Very Embarassing Story

We had the opportunity to view The Odd Life of Timothy Green last month after a very special outdoor event with the lovely Jennifer Garner. We ate, played games, heard about Frigidaire and the great work they're doing in the community and then headed off to the Grauman's Chinese Theater to enjoy the movie.

I didn't quite know what to expect when we sat down to watch The Odd Life of Timothy Green. I had briefly read the premise and all I remembered was, "kid is grown in the garden." It was nothing like I had heard of before. More than anything I was intrigued to see how Disney was going to make it work.

Well, they totally made it work. By the end of the movie I had shed a tear, been made eternally grateful to be a parent and completely related to the characters in the movie. Yes, the kid comes from the garden, but it fits into the plot in a non-weird way. It doesn't seem like a stretch. It's also one of those movies that is narrated in present time and goes back and talks about what happened.

Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton do a great job of portraying first-time parents and their decisions as they are raising their new kid is completely relate-able. Often times it was like they asked me for my opinion on what to do because I had done the same thing as a parent. Without giving too much away, my favorite part was Jennifer Garner finally letting it out on her sister (the one-upper) because I cannot begin to tell you how many times I would love to do that to some people.

All in all, it's a great family movie. I took my two kids with me; the baby fell asleep (thank goodness!) and my 4.5 year old sat through it, but I don't think he understood a lot of it so he really wasn't crazy about it. There's a lot of soccer in it (that's the sport the boy in the movie plays), so he liked that part. I would recommend this movie for parents and kids older than 7 if you want to sit through it. It's a tear-jerker so I do recommend you bring tissue with you. If you're pregnant or your hormones are raging, then bring a whole box. It deals with infertility, adoption and a strong want to have kids.

And I promised you an embarrassing story, so here it is. Right before I met Jennifer Garner I read/heard something about her being pregnant. It was so obviously old news. How do I know? 'Cause I'm the idiot that asked her how far along she was... only to have her tell me that her son was four months old. I could have died right then and there. To make matters worse, she then had to stand next to me for a group picture (above). I apologized profusely and I honestly don't know what got into me. I have NEVER been that rude and asked a woman how far along she is (unless it's very obvious). At this point I just hope Disney doesn't black-list me for this.

Here's a great scene from The Odd Life of Timothy Green. I would love to hear your thoughts on the movie too!

Tips for Eating Out with Kids

As a parent, going out to a restaurant is a lot more meaningful than simply treating the family to a different meal. It’s about not having to wash dishes afterwards, not having to decide what to make for dinner, and it’s about teaching my kids how to act in public and not ruin someone else’s dinner. To do this, we have a few tips:

Be an early bird. My husband gets off of work semi-early compared to others. He’s home by 3:30 p.m. and by the time he’s done with his workout it’s around 5 p.m. We head out immediately after he’s done with his shower so we can get ahead of the dinner crowd. We’ve been known to have dinner as early as 4 p.m.! I don’t mind it though. Having an early dinner usually means better deals AND there are fewer patrons around us so it calms my nerves as we get ready to have dinner.

Choose wisely. We tend to visit the same restaurants over and over. I’m okay with that because I know what we’re getting into. For example, I know Red Robin has a few arcade games and they offer balloons. A win-win for me. Plus, you can always ask them to bring a basket of fries before your order is delivered. Other restaurants offer you kid kits that take a bit to get assembled. A plus if you have kids who are doing it themselves, a minus if you have young kids who are anxious about getting their plaything.

Kids Eat Free specials. I love restaurants who offer free meals to kids. It saves us money and it usually means that the restaurant is kid friendly. Some will even have a balloon artist, face painter, musicians, etc. available during this time.

Bring distractions. A few years ago we came across The Family Rescue Kit and Guide. We bought it even though our kid was still too young to use it. Since then, we make sure to come prepared. I always bring food with me (I like to think of them as appetizers for kids), toys (the kind that don’t roll off the table), and crayons – although crayons are pointless since we seem to dine at restaurants that always offer crayons. If you forget distractions, look no further than the sugar packets on the table. Stack ‘em, toss ‘em or give it to the kids and play sugar packet football. Trust me, sometimes you’ll get desperate enough for them to calm down that you’ll create the best games.

Get the corner booth. If available, try to get seated in a corner booth, table, etc. This way, if you HAVE to let your kids off their chairs, they can hang around the table and not get in people’s way.

Ask for the check up front. Order your food (including desert) all at the same time and then ask the server to bring your check with your food. There are some times when the kids are ready to leave and since we usually pay with a debit card, it takes a few minutes to get everything processed and squared away. If you pay for it as soon as your food arrives, then you can leave as soon as your done with your meal!

Free food. I like to think of food like bread and chips as “free food”. You can order as much as you like and they won’t charge you. It seems like my kids are only calm when they’re eating so we get food in their mouth as soon as possible. And yes, my kids have been known to eat for an hour straight.

Ask for extra water. It never fails that we’ll finish our drinks and our server is nowhere to be found. It’s worse when the kids are thirsty and the little one is yelling because he wants water and we don’t have any. He will scream his head off until he gets it, and unfortunately, asking a 14 month old to calm down and wait a minute for a drink simply won’t work.

Ask for the kid’s food first. Most restaurants will wait for all the food to be ready until it is brought out to the table. Impatient, hungry kids do not like this. Ask them to bring out the kid’s food as soon as possible. You will avoid a meltdown and a lot of “I’m hungry, where’s the food?” whining.

Treat yourself. Eating out is a special activity. Treat it as such. Order yourself something that you normally wouldn’t have. For me, it is usually an over-priced after-dinner coffee. To ensure that I get to enjoy it, I order it before everyone has finished their meal so that I can drink it and finish it in peace before they are ready to go.

Above all, be cognizant of where you are dining. Some restaurants are not kid-friendly, save that restaurant outing for a date with your spouse – sans kids. Even if you have a crazy evening out, you will still come home to a clean kitchen!

How I Take Care of My Smile, plus a Giveaway! #WinningSmile #CrestSponsored

I'm a firm believer in having a winning smile. I can't begin to tell you how bummed I was growing up and being the only kid in my class who never had braces. I longed for them like most kids long for a new pair of shoes. I wanted my teeth to be perfectly straight like the women in the novelas that I watched. I wanted that beautiful pearly white smile. I finally got my chance in June 2009 when I went in for my Invisalign. I wore them proudly because I knew that at the end of six months I was FINALLY going to have my winning smile. And here it is:

It's not perfect, but it exemplifies my self-confidence and at the end of the day, that's all that matters.

Now that I have kids I am nothing if not persistent that they have a beautiful almost-perfect smile and teeth from the moment that their first tooth comes in. I believe that a smile will take you places and every time that my kids smile at me I am filled with joy. I love seeing their teeth as they smile and I will work my butt off to ensure that their gorgeous little smile stays with them (cavity-free) throughout childhood and into adulthood.

I ALWAYS show my pearly whites because even though I drink coffee non-stop, I am lucky enough to not have my teeth stained! I don't do this alone though. Nope. I have a whole brigade behind me! Recently, I've been using the wonderful Crest Complete Deep Clean product line:

I feel good every time I smile because I know that while my teeth aren't perfect, they are in tip-top shape thanks to all the flossing, rinsing, brushing, etc. My confidence shows in my smile and because of the time I invest in my teeth-cleaning routine.

Frugal Friday: Museums- Cool places for hot mamas (and the family!)

$

When it’s hot enough to fry an egg and get an instant suntan (like, um, NOW), it’s time to head inside to cool off, and I don’t mean to go stand in front of an open freezer. This week, we’re sharing some fun, educational (and mostly indoor) places to go, plus some admission specials they have.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles

First stop on the tour: The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles at Exposition Park. This place is huge. It would take a couple days to really see everything in detail, but as a day trip it’s quite satisfying. You can explore many aspects of life on earth, with exhibits featuring dinosaurs (in the brand-new Dino Hall, complete with a Dino Lab), mammals, reptiles, birds, an insect zoo, California history, gems and minerals, and much, much more.

The second level houses the Discovery Center, where your little homo sapiens sapiens can get some practice in as amateur paleontologists or touch hands-on collections.

Level One hosts kids story times and live animal presentations. Get in that visit before the little people head back to school. Most first Tuesdays of the month are FREE, and the program has been expanded for September.

FREE upcoming Tuesdays:

• September 4, 2012

• September 11, 2012

• September 18, 2012

• September 25, 2012

• October 2, 2012

Check the website for details and ensure that dates have not changed.

The Natural History Museum is located in Exposition Park at 900 Exposition Boulevard between Vermont Avenue and Figueroa Street.

La Brea Tar Pits and Page Museum

Our second stop is a place most people have heard of, but haven’t visited - the La Brea Tar Pits and Page Museum. Outside, you’ll see the famous (and odorous) La Brea Tar Pits, complete with replica Ice Age mammals.

My son was quite happy with just those and we probably could have sat out there all day. The Page Museum features exhibits of the prehistoric specimens recovered from the Tar Pits (really, they should be called crude oil pits).

You can also observe at the Fishbowl, a paleontological laboratory within the museum. It gives visitors an opportunity to watch how Ice Age fossils are cleaned, studied, and prepared for exhibit.

FYI: there are no dinosaurs here. If the little ones want dinos, see our first stop above. The Page can easily be seen in a couple of hours. In addition to the indoor museum, an outdoor area with several excavation pits is open for public observation.

FREE general admission on the first Tuesday of every month except July and August.

The museum is located at 5801 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036.

Both of the above Museums have paid parking, cash only. Be sure to get your parking validated, and to cut down on expenses, carpool- find a friend with a big car, cram everyone in that will fit, and then split the cost.

The Bowers Museum and Kidseum

Our third stop for today is a little closer to home for us- The Bowers Museum and Bowers Kidseum. The Bowers main museum has cultural exhibits for the whole family. They change often, and showcase traveling exhibits- last year I was lucky enough to see Chinas Terra Cotta Warriors hosted here. Current exhibits include “The Ancient Arts of China”, “Faberge” (yes, the “egg” guy), “California Gold”, “Spirits and Headhunters”, and many more. The Kidseum, across the parking lot from the main museum, is a place where kids CAN touch the exhibits- in fact, they are encouraged to use their imagination while doing activities that incorporate cultural art and play.

After so much horrified “DON’T TOUCH” emanating from mommy at most places, my now-4-year-old son looked at me like “you mean, I CAN touch this stuff?” the first time we visited here. The Kidseum has arts and crafts hours, special programs, and story times as well- please see the website for more details.

Both the Bowers Museum and Bowers Kidseum participate in Target Free First Sundays. Admission is FREE to both museums on the first Sunday of every month. It’s always crowded, so try to arrive early.

Also, on Tuesdays, Santa Ana residents get in FREE with proof of residency.

Bowers Museum is located at 2002 N.Main St. Santa Ana, CA 92706

Kidseum is located at 1802 N. Main St., Santa Ana, Ca. 92706

Discovery Science Center

Our final stop on the museum tour today is Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana. What a great hands-on scientific environment for kids. Regular ongoing exhibits in the museum include an earthquake simulator (rather apropos after the last couple days here), wave machine, light microscopes, a rocket lab, the Dino Quest adventure, and much more.

The traveling exhibits are always awesome- we saw the “Star Wars” exhibit a few months back, and upcoming events like “Bob the Builder Project : Build It” (opening September 15th) and “Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology” should be amazing. “Indiana” is coming October 12th- - and of course I’ll be taking my little junior archaeologist.

Almost everything is interactive, so the kids (and adults) are learning while they play. On the first Saturday of every month, if you have a valid Bank of America credit card and ID, and show it at the ticket window, guess what? You’re FREE! Free admission limited to the cardholder only. Also, the first Tuesday of every month, Santa Ana residents can receive up to 4 free admissions per address with valid ID, and credentialed teachers that are members of the Teacher Education Network program get in free every day. Parking is in a paid lot, but it’s cheap. There are other nearby parking areas (like *ahem* the mall) but be aware of any posted regulations. See detailed admission specials and regular pricing here.

Discovery Science Center is at 2500 North Main Street, Santa Ana, CA 92705.

And remember, with all these museum visits, you and the kiddos are getting not only an education, but free air-conditioning!

Stay cool, museum goers!

Back-to-School Means Eating Healthy, plus a Giveaway! Courtesy of @Walmart.away!

Here's an interesting fact:

According to Walmart’s “Class of 2012 Back-to-School Survey,” 76 percent of moms with children in kindergarten to 12th grade consider back-to-school a time for a fresh start over Jan. 1 and 61 percent of moms said they plan to get their families to eat healthier during the new school year. However, moms’ biggest challenge with getting their families to eat healthier during the school year is the cost of healthier foods.

I can totally relate to the results. My kids do not go to school yet, but I'm already hyperventilating over here because as I've mentioned before, my kids are vegetarian. I remember school lunches and from what I remember, they were not exactly 1) healthy 2) vegetarian-friendly and 3) tasty. There is no doubt in my mind that I will be packing the kids' lunches. In fact, I'm already coming up with a few ideas for school lunches. Take a look at all the great (and healthy) foods I found on a recent trip to Walmart:

We have the trusty fruits (bananas and grapes), cheese sticks, fruit snacks, yogurt packets (with no artificial coloring), organic apple juice, dill pickle chips, Snapea Crips, ClifKid bars, Del Monte fruit bowls and this:

This is my take on a healthy version of chips. I slice up a fresh cucumber, then add some lemon and tajin over it. Gives it a little bit of kick, but it's refreshing and you still get that crunch. And it's no biggie if they're sitting in a lunchbox for hours. In fact, they're even better after a few hours because they've sat there marinating in the lemon juice.

And this sandwich here is no ordinary sandwich:

This sandwich is assembled over sourdough bread and has: romaine lettuce, sharp cheddar cheese, snacking cucumbers (thinly sliced), light mayo, mustard, tomatoes and vegan peppered turkey! Yup. This sandwich is vegetarian and loaded with veggies!

There are so many different ways to play with food nowadays and make them healthier. Walmart makes it affordable to do this thanks to their fresh produce section and their new Great for You seal, available now in the produce section and on additional Great Value and Marketside items starting this fall. The Great for You seal will make it easier to identify affordable, healthier food choices.
