Frugal Friday: Let’s get moving! | #Hiking #OrangeCounty

0
0

The holiday season is here, and for me (and many of you, I’m sure) that means lots of stress and clothes that feel a few sizes smaller (mmm…eggnog….). Want to de-stress, keep your pants zip-able, and feel like a million bucks without spending it? Get away from the computer (that’s a tough one for me!), get out of the mall, and get yourself under the bright blue sky with some fresh air, open space, and all the wonders of nature. No mall-walking. Go for a hike.

There are a ton of great places to hike in OC. The book Afoot and Afield in Orange County: A Comprehensive Hiking Guide, by Jerry Schad, is an awesome reference, and I recommend it, but even without the detailed maps and descriptions, you can get some great leg stretching in right near home- without the lure of retail stores.

For anyone that might be uncomfortable in the wilderness, Mile Square Park is centrally located. You can hike around the outskirts of the park, walk the meandering pathways that lead to the ponds and playgrounds, or you can check the nature center hours and view some wildlife and plants native to OC. It’s not a huge hike, but it will get you moving, plus you’ll still be bounded by civilization. Central Park in Huntington Beach is similar- it offers great hikes and a nature center as well, surrounded by city life.

For more adventurous (but still citified) souls, head to Irvine Regional Park in Orange. The expansive park encompasses a huge area, and trails abound. You can go to the OC Zoo, rent horses, ride the train, visit the nature center, or take the kids for a friendly walk in the park. You can also go into the backcountry areas and get in some wilderness hiking. The back of the park gets right up to the edges of the canyon lands, giving an opportunity for some great nature viewing. Make sure to bring water and snacks if you decide to venture beyond the grassy areas of the park.

One of my favorite (and more rugged) areas to hike is the Harding Truck Trail and the Chaparral trailhead off it, near the Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary in Modjeska Canyon. Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary is a great family place for a short jaunt, and for a more challenging hike, the Harding and Chaparral trails are waiting. It’s something that could be done by a more novice hiker, but definitely more involved than hikes on parkland. For canyons hikes, I’d suggest a purchasing a forest adventure pass (very little parking is allowed without one), a backpack, and some snacks, water, energy bars, and hiking boots. The canyons are still relatively wild, so make sure you take a hiking companion.

For me, getting up and getting moving during the festive season will be the best thing I can do for my sanity - and my pocketbook, since I won’t have to buy new clothes in larger sizes. Plus, I can have that extra glass (or two) of eggnog or mulled wine. Yay for the holidays!

If you have a favorite place to hike, please feel free to share it in the comments section- you can never have too much nature.

Celebrate the holidays at Discovery Science Center | @DiscoveryCube #OrangeCounty

The holiday season is apparent everywhere you go, including the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, CA. You can expect their permanent exhibits to be there year round, but the month of December asks for a special visit to the "Cube".

In it's 7th year, the Science of Gingerbread exhibition and competition will intrigue you as you walk around the tables and "ooh" and "ahh" at all the wonderful creations. The gingerbread competition is by far my favorite part of all the holiday celebrations at DSC.  I am AMAZED at the creativity that people (and groups) possess.

Alongside the Science of Gingerbread exhibit, you'll also engage in hands-on activities including recipe science, learning about kitchen tools, and more.

Special Programming Includes: (Every weekend and daily December 16 – January 6)
  • Visit with Santa and take a photo with him. (weekends only)
  • See our “Matter of Taste” Stage Show featuring kitchen science.
  • Build and race a candy car in DSC’s Gingerbread Derby.
  • Make your own gingerbread mix to take home.
  • Decorate holiday cookies and eat them too!
My second favorite activity to seeing the gingerbread exhibit is making the gingerbread mix. They hand you this huge bag and you get in a line and walk through the tables, measure out your ingredients and voila! You have a gingerbread mix that you can make at home! It's really great and the kids have a blast measuring out the ingredients.

Heritage Hill Candlelight Walk | @OCParks #OrangeCounty

It’s that time of year again! Heritage Hill Historical Park in Lake Forest, part of OC Parks, is celebrating Christmas. The Candlelight Walk, an annual event, occurs this weekend, December 8th and 9th from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Two enchanting evenings will be offered, with luminary-lit pathways and the park glowing with twinkling holiday lighting. Trail edges will be lit by over one-thousand luminaries, and holiday music will play to keep you in the spirit of the season. You can enjoy strolls through restored historic buildings adorned in holiday decor and staffed by park docents, hear carolers, see live entertainment, listen to storytellers, and visit with Santa. Refreshments like hot apple cider, cocoa, and confections are available for a nominal fee.

Originally dedicated as a park in 1981, Heritage Hill Historical Park's 4.1 acres and buildings span the early history of the Saddleback Valley and El Toro area, and include the Serrano Adobe, a state historical landmark (built in1863) which originally at the site. Other structures were moved to the site over the years in order to preserve them: El Toro Grammar School (built in 1890); St. George's Episcopal Mission (b.1891), and the Harvey Bennett Ranch House (b.1908). As a group, these buildings take visitors on a historical architectural journey (in a village setting) back to the roots of Orange County. It’s an easy-to-navigate park, making it perfect for families, especially those with small children. Please see the OC Parks website for more information.

Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy this incredible (and highly educational) park and celebrate the holiday season with friends and family. There are no other parks in Orange County quite like this one, in my opinion. Being there for the holidays will feel like a step back to simpler times.

Christmas at the Zoo - 12/8 | @OCParks #OrangeCounty

Most of you that read my Frugal Friday posts already know that Irvine Regional Park in Orange is a favorite place for my family. There are so many things to do that even the most rambunctious 4-year–old (like mine) could never get bored, and this holiday season, the park has some wonderful family offerings. The OC Zoo within the park is one such place. My family had the pleasure of attending a media preview tour for the Zoo’s special Christmas event “Christmas at the Zoo”, happening this Saturday, December 8th.

The zoo, always a cute and charming place, is beautifully decorated with snowflakes, ornaments, Christmas trees, and of course, presents- it makes for a warm and welcoming family excursion. The event brings Christmas and the holiday spirit right into the heart of the zoo. During this special event, the animals will receive treats and goodies hidden inside Christmas trees and gift boxes. There will be many activities for the day - kids (and adults) can visit with Santa, hear stories from Mrs. Claus, do some crafts, and get their faces painted. All activities within the zoo for this special event are included with Zoo admission.

For the preview, we were given a quick tour to see the zoo’s holiday décor and the festive animal habitats. Most of the enclosures include a goody box for the inhabitants. It was raining, but that didn’t stop the animals from enjoying their gifts. The bears and mountain lions each received wrapped boxes containing edible snacks and playthings. After witnessing the animals “open” (literally ripping and tearing with teeth and claws) the presents (similarly to a 4-year-old, I might add), I think I have a better understanding of how they take down prey. The kids were cheering as the animals tore off the wrapping paper and into the cardboard to get the tasty goodies. The aftermath resembled our living room floor on Christmas Day.

The animal keepers also presented a great deal of educational information about each animal that we stopped to see, as well as the background regarding how they came to be at the zoo. The kids got a quick visit with one of the zoo’s resident hedgehogs, and being able to touch the adorable little guy was the highlight of the afternoon for my son. Informational discussions, models, skeletal remains, educational materials, and visits with some of the animals (particularly the petting zoo) are all part of the zoo experience.

We enjoy the zoo regularly during the year as an easily-affordable educational expedition. They have so much to offer- story times, animal exhibits, toddler programs, and more. This Christmas event is a perfect opportunity for families (and everyone else) to see the animals get into the holiday spirit and spend some quality time with loved ones. After the zoo, more adventures within the park await.

More information about the zoo and zoo programs can be found on the Orange County Parks website and OC Parks facebook page. Short videos about the zoo and the 2012 Christmas event are available on OC Park's YouTube channel.

Christmas at the Zoo Event Information

The OC Zoo “Christmas at the Zoo” special event is this Saturday, December 8th, from 10am to 4pm at Irvine Regional Park in Orange, 1 Irvine Park Rd., Orange, CA, 92869. For more information, visit their website at http://OCParks.com or call (714) 973-6846.

All activities within the zoo are included in zoo admission ($2.00; ages 2 and under free). Entry fee into Irvine Park this day is $5.00 per vehicle.

Irvine Park Railroad Christmas Train and Santa's Village | @IrvineParkRR #ChristmasTrain

We just can’t get enough of Irvine Park and how family-friendly it is. Irvine Park Railroad, located near the front of the park, is one of my sons favorite stops in the park. It has many seasonal events we’ve enjoyed over the years. Our family was recently invited to attend the 17th annual Irvine Park Railroad Christmas Train in Irvine Regional Park.

The train is festively adorned with twinkling lights and garland, and the park areas around the train, the tracks, and at the North Pole stop have been transformed (with hundreds of lights and decorations) into a wonderland. The Christmas train takes travelers to the North Pole outpost in the park, where families can take photos with Santa, snack on cookies and popcorn, listen to Christmas music, and warm up with hot cocoa, perfect for the chilly December evenings. Food and drink items are available for sale at both the Train Station and the North Pole.

Christmas Train tickets are $10 each (ages 24 months and younger are free). Visitors may take their own pictures with Santa, or you may purchase a picture taken by Irvine Park Railroad. Each 5” x 7” photo will be done with an Irvine Park Railroad border and are available for pickup shortly after being taken.

We rode the train just as darkness fell, the lights along the track turning the dusky and rainy twilight into something far more exciting for my 4-year-old. I was amazed at how beautifully the lights emphasized natural shapes in the park, and while the lights grew brighter as we approached the “North Pole”, the excitement of the children on the train was palpable. Upon exiting, my son was initially hesitant to talk to Santa- he was not too certain that his behavior this year had been acceptable for presents. After speaking with the big guy in red (and posing for a photo), he left smiling. It took only a few minutes for our picture to be ready, and we made a stop for cookies, popcorn, and cocoa before re-boarding for the trip back to the station.

Near the train station is Santa's Village, looking homey and inviting. The enchanting little area really made our evening, and the icicle-lighting on the historic-styled buildings made it feel like a tiny mountain town. Here you can find something fun for every member of the family. Activities open an hour prior to the Christmas train, and include cookie decorating, coloring pages, a “moon bounce”, and carnival games (like bean bag-tossing) that can be enjoyed by all ages. Mrs. Santa Claus also makes an appearance here, reading Christmas tales to the kids and visiting with guests between story times. After the book, my son had an animated conversation with Mrs. Claus that ended in high-fives. I have a sneaking suspicion he was trying to persuade her to tell Santa that he’s been a model child all year. Overall, it was a great family experience, and I recommend it (especially at night- the lights really make it special) for a fun family time.

The Irvine Park Railroad Christmas Train will be open December 7-9th, and from December 14-23rd at Irvine Regional Park, 1 Irvine Park Rd., Orange, Ca., 92869.

Irvine Park Entry is $5 per vehicle on weekends, $3 during the week; however, parking for the Christmas Train is FREE after 5:00 PM. Visit the Irvine Park Railroad website for more information on pricing and the schedule. You can also visit the OC Parks Facebook page for up-to-the minute information and to share your own pictures!

Santa's Village requires activity tickets, $4 each or $50 for a book of 15. Coloring and Story time with Mrs. Claus are FREE.

Surprise and Delight series in Orange County malls | #OrangeCounty

If you shop in Orange County, chances are that you hit up one or two Simon Malls throughout your shopping excursions. Maybe you're a Westminster Mall shopper (like me) or perhaps you venture down south to The Shops at Mission Viejo. Whether you shop at either of these two, or at the Brea Mall or Laguna Hills Mall, now you have an even bigger incentive to shop at Simon Malls - introducing the "Surprise and Delight" series (continuing until Christmas eve). Here are a few highlights of this fun (no work needed) series:

Surprise gifting to holiday shoppers

Mall management staff on the premises, eager to introduce themselves and thank shoppers for visiting the mall - they may even give a holiday treat without warning. These gifts will vary by mall, but holiday revelers could find themselves with a voucher for free coffee, a coupon for a free appetizer at a mall restaurant, or some candy to satisfy that sweet tooth!

Help carrying packages to their vehicles (excluding Laguna Hills Mall)

Shoppers needing help carrying packages to their vehicles will find assistance readily available at busy mall entrances. Easily-identifiable security personnel will be happy to ‘lighten the load’. This service is available every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday throughout the holiday season and on Christmas Eve.

Available staff for finding the right shops (excluding Laguna Hills Mall)

Friendly mall staff will be stationed near mall directories during holiday weekends and on Christmas Eve ready to give directions, answer questions, and distribute the popular ‘Retailer Showcase’ with the mall’s best holiday offers and deals. These holiday greeters will be available every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday throughout the holiday season and on Christmas Eve.

Holiday Entertainment

Shoppers will also want to grab a schedule of the many entertainment offerings on mall during the holiday season. From school choirs singing holiday favorites to dance troupes to local musicians and theater groups, the mall, as it has been for generations, is the perfect place to catch the holiday spirit.

Local charity fundraisers

Local charity outreach is always a major part of the Simon holiday story and that is no exception this year as local charities will be on mall during the season fundraising for their efforts.

‘Rejuvenation Stations’

These popular lounges serve as a resting place for shoppers looking to regain their second wind! Shoppers can enjoy a comfortable seat, scan the Retailer Showcase or the local paper, and have a beverage. If you're shopping at the Westminster Mall - you can find the Rejuvenation Station by the escalators on the first floor (not by the Target).

Free Valet for shoppers spending over $500 (excluding Laguna Hills Mall and Brea Mall)

One day of free valet parking during the holiday season for patrons who spend $500 in any one day and show their receipts at Guest Services.

Please let us know if you snag any of these "Surprise & Delight" incentives!

Frugal Friday: Sensible Holiday Eating | @emeals #holidayeating

The holiday season means indulging in foods and drinks (like eggnog…oh yum...) that only come around once a year. Time to splurge, right? Wrong. Splurging too much, whether with money or calories, could cost you cash or sweat equity.

Market Pantry Egg Nog and Horizon's Egg Nog

Save time

Think simple! No time-consuming, crazy, elaborate, fat-laden snacks or desserts.

Think “easy” to save yourself the stress- and we all know stress leads to more cortisol production, which leads to weight gain, right? Instead of cherries jubilee or some architectural wonder of a cake, go with homey warm custards, non-fat pudding parfaits (with homemade skim-milk whipped topping and fruit), fruit tarts, and quick breads.

To help me out during the holidays (and after!) I've signed up for eMeals.com, a reasonably-priced meal planning service that provides healthy menus and recipes, plus grocery lists and prices to make shopping easier.

What a time-saver this should be! I spend hours every week making grocery lists and clipping coupons, and then deciding what to serve based on sales. If this cuts back on that time, it will be worth it.

Save Cash

Buy bulk items like oats, flour, etc., at stores that have bulk bins and cook from scratch at home. It will save over name-brand packaged items. Homemade meals and cookies will just cost pennies!

Limit gourmet ingredients. I draw the low-end line at chocolate “flavored” chips, however.

Think seasonal foods. Fresh items in season are always cheaper.

Use coupons. Combine manufacturer coupons with store coupons to get the maximum discount.

Make sangria or mulled wine from cheaper varieties since you’re adding fresh fruit and spices.

Vintner's Red California

Save pounds

See this?? Don't eat it.

strawberry cake picture

Ok, that looks too delicious not to indulge, but think “portion control”.

Don’t waste your waistline for a pie!

Don't skip meals. And… only eat normal amounts. Don’t unbutton those pants! In fact, wear your tightest ones. They’ll remind you WHY you need to eat reasonably.

Sip wine instead of mixed cocktails, or go for "skinny" cocktails.

Eat smaller portions and make goodies bite-size.

Use lowfat yogurt in dips, and non-fat milk in place of cream (like in eggnog) to save fat and calories.

Skim the fat off pan drippings (chill it to harden fat) before making gravy.

Use broth for flavor instead of fats like lard or butter.

Get exercise- make sure you get at least 15 minutes a day of brisk exercise. Grab your kid, turn on the music, and dance around the living room for a fast and easy workout.

Happy eating!

Spiderman rules the holidays at home! | @HasbroNews #HasbroHoliday

My little man received an early birthday/Christmas present this year - three very awesome, very fun Hasbro Spiderman toys - the Spiderman Hero FX mask, Spiderman Hero FX glove and Spiderman Hero FX chest light. All have received rave reviews from my boys (ages 5 and 18 months).

I'm pretty sure these toys are meant for kids that are just a little bit older - however, my kids will make them work if they want them bad enough. Hence, here above is my 5 year old with a mask that is just a little too big for this head, and gloves that have a strap as tight as it can be, but still a little too big. The chest light fits just right.

And below is my 18 month old who doesn't care just how big everything fits, he wears them, owns them and shrieks when the play toys are taken off.

Having a house full of boys means there's a lot of jumping, running and pretending to be super heroes. These fun Hasbro Spiderman toys makes pretend play even more fun.

The Spiderman Hero FX mask has straps to secure it to the kids head from all angles. You can make it tight enough to fit an 18 month's old head (like my kid above), he won't be able to see very well though - but at least he can walk around and not have it fall off.

Another cool feature on the mask is the button that you can press and hear Spiderman's voice. It has a few catch phrases that it throws out and the button is very nicely camouflaged. The batteries are inserted on the top of the mask under a little placket. Also camouflaged.

The glove has a huge button that goes on the bottom of the wrist and when you press it, it makes web-slinging sounds. I prefer this glove to the one that actually shoots webbing because there is no mess. I couldn't imagine having to go throughout the house picking up the web mess. The sound effects work just fine for us.

The one-size-fits-all Spiderman Hero FX chest light is my fav. I like it because it's easy to put on (there's two pieces to it - one goes under the shirt, the other goes over the shirt), it makes cool sound effects and it lights up. This makes evening play that much better!

Really, you can't go wrong with any of these Spiderman Hero FX toys. They are affordable, very fun, easy to use, and you can re-use them as Halloween costume accessories! Now here's the best part of this post (besides my over-abundance of pictures above) - you can win all three toys for your kids!

Entering the giveaway is super easy - just answer the question in the widget below and leave your answer in the comment section below. I'm very excited for whomever wins because I know the kids will love them. And if you can't wait to see if you won - you can purchase these toys online on the Hasbro website or at any major retailer. They are seriously fun play toys and it takes pretend play to another level.

When a parent gets sick | #KleenexSWS #spon

Sickness is not something that comes to our home too often. When it does, the whole world stops for us and we really dig into our comfort zone.

The hubster does a lot for me and the kids when we get to the point where we can't even move. He comes home with all kinds of treats (most recently, a Dairy Queen ice cream treat), toys, books, games, etc. I lay on the couch, let him take care of the kids and their needs and I really focus on myself.

The last time that I was sick I couldn't stay awake for more than a few hours at a time. Whatever bug I had hit me hard, and I almost went through a whole box of Kleenex (the one in the cute container). I also happened to be breastfeeding at the time so I was not able to medicate myself with some much-needed drugs. Instead, I felt like I was on my deathbed with only a comfy blanket to hold. I relied on the hubster for everything - including keeping cold electrolyte water next to me, the Apple TV control, my iPad and of course, the Kleenex.

I have to tell you, there should be some kind of universal rule out there that parents are not allowed to get sick. It really throws everything off and it makes me long for the days when I was well enough to chase the kids around. When I get sick, I really can't handle anything else and the hubster picks up a lot of the slack (which in turn makes me feel super guilty).

Those days when I'm feeling completely useless, I'm reminded that a shared Kleenex care pack would come as a gentle reminder to others who may also have that yucky feeling of sickness.

The Kleenex Brand Care Pack includes: lip balm, 1 oz. hand sanitizer, coupon booklet, Kleenex Brand Share Pack, Kleenex Brand Slim Pack, and card redeemable to download four songs from up and coming Universal Music Artists. You have the option of sending a care pack when you purchase a specially marked bundle or boxes of Kleenex brand tissue. It's a great and thoughtful way of letting others know that you care.

Assassin's Creed 3 is Amazon's Gold Box Deal of the Day | #AC3Gold #spon

Up until about a year ago I had no idea that Tuesday's were dedicated to new video and movie releases. Seriously. I guess there's some unwritten rule out there that says that every Tuesday, a new movie or video game will hit stands and everyone and their mom will go out and buy it that week because we all know that the first week is when it's cheapest (oh, wait, YOU didn't know that?). So today being Tuesday, I am hear to tell you loud and very, very clear to get your precious little butt to Amazon and grab the coolest game on the block, Assassin's Creed 3 because it's the Gold Box Deal of the Day and only $33 (that's 45% off regular price)!

I can honestly say that I have yet to play Assassin's Creed 1 or 2. However... I have a hubster who is so totally into games and he does play them. In fact, he is not in the least way apologetic for knowing that the game comes out on Tuesday and that he would love to have it as a Christmas gift. He's a gamer and he doesn't care who knows it.

So what's the deal with Assassin's Creed 3? Well this new version takes you through a journey as a Native American assassin where you can eliminate your enemies with guns, bows, tomahawks, and more! You go from bustling city streets to the chaotic battlefields and play a critical role in the most legendary events of the American Revolution including the Battle of Bunker Hill and Great Fire of New York. If you look at it the right way, it's like a very gruesome history lesson on the American Revolution. Perhaps a fun extra credit project? Okay, that last part might be taking it a little bit too far. Regardless, it's a lot of killing with history mixed in. And it's perfect for the more mature gamer (especially since it's rated M for Mature).

Here's something fun that is also happening all day today (12/11) - if you tweet the sentence below, you automatically be entered to win a copy of Assassin's Creed 3! So easy to do, and bonus points for you if you score a free copy.

You know how sometimes you can't think of what to get someone for the holidays, and then you think of how many people there are in this world who won't have anything for the holidays? Well it's these times that you want to check out World Vision catalog, browse it and then click the "buy" button to make a difference in someone's life.

I've all seen the World Vision commercials, I've received the literature, but it wasn't until I had kids that my heart strings were pulled every time I saw a poor child without shoes, without food or without clothes. It killed me to think of all the kids and their families who suffer day after day simply because of where they were born. I was lucky enough to be born right where I want to live. Something like birth location could be the only thing that separates me from someone else. So now I do what I can with what little I have to help others out. Locally, I give back by donating products that I have been sent for review, outgrown toys and cans of food when I can. Globally and nationwide, we have begun to give back through the World Vision catalog where we can see how much we can give with just a little bit of money. For example, with a $16 donation I can feed a family for one day here in the US. For $60, I can pay for one year of a child's schooling in a country such as Ghana, Chad or Zambia! These are monetary donations that are not extravagant, yet they make a big difference in someone's life.

World Vision also has gifts that do double-duty in the gifting department.Gifts to the World Vision Gift Catalog Maximum Impact Fund are used where resources are most desperately needed, to help children and families in struggling communities around the world. With a financial contribution, the gift giver can select one of 36 Maximum Impact items (a few are listed below) that can be given to a loved one and at the same time help a person in need.

Artisan Beaded Necklace: This glass-bead necklace is handmade in Thailand and can be worn several different ways — even as a multi-strand bracelet.

Movie review: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey | @TheHobbitMovie #TheHobbit

The Lord of the Rings series brought many fans and many loyal followers (including myself) as the series followed along with Frodo, who was on a mission to destroy the “Ring” that has overtaken all of Middle Earth.

And now, the beloved prelude, “The Hobbit” has come to theaters. This story is where it all began as we follow Bilbo Baggins, beloved hobbit of the shire where we learn of his battle within himself by both the Baggins side within him, and the Took side (a more adventurous side indeed!)

The Hobbits, as you know, live in a pretty ordinary place with predictable routines and patterns through and through, so when Gandalf appeared on Bilbo Baggins doorstep asking if he’d like to go on an adventure, this is where it all came to be. Although Bilbo answered with a deliberate “no” we soon learn that Gandalf does not take “no” for an answer as that evening dwarves began to arrive on his doorstep: Balin, Dwalin, Fili, Tili, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Thorin, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, and Gloin.

As they all stood in his hobbit hole, Bilbo Baggins, had to come to a decision, whether he stayed put in his ordinary life, or went on this adventure, in which, they would encounter a dragon at the end with death staring him in the eye wherever he may turn. This dragon, Smaug, is the one that overthrew the dwarves 60 years prior, and Thorin, leader of the dwarves, is finally ready to face him, and take his homeland back.

But if there is one way to view this movie, it is truly in 3D, putting on those glasses, and given 48 frames per second, this is one movie in which you feel as if you’re there as it’s all happening around you. Granted, not everyone was a fan. There is a scene where birds appear, and that scene, right there, shows the beauty of 3D in the movies.

As Bilbo Baggins is introduced to Orcs, Trolls, Goblins, Elves and more, he is also in the process of discovering himself, and you are a part of every moment including the exact moment of when he found the “ring,” and the riddles that resumed after with Mr. Baggins, and the beloved Gollum.

And in the style of the Lord of the Rings Series, The Hobbit does not disappoint. By showing the fierceness of The Great Wizard “Gandalf” and the vibrant beauty of “Lady of the Lorien” within the elves community “Riverdell.”

You will laugh as you are introduced to Trolls, reminisce when Frodo makes an appearance in the beginning, and get attached to some other characters in the movie: think: Gollum: “my precious” to “Radagast” the wizard who oversees the forest, and the one that is the first to introduce us to the “necromancer,” the beginning of a growing menace within the Mirkwood Forests.

Although, be prepared, because, this movie is long, and it does begin awfully slowly. But by the middle of the movie, you are along for the adventure, and the last hour flies by as action after action really starts in. This first “An Unexpected Journey” is just the first of a 3 part series of “The Hobbit.”

But, to anyone’s delight, The Hobbit follows suit in the greatness of what was The Lord of the Rings series, and doesn’t disappoint. The characters were spot on, comedic, and memorable, and by the end, you will have your favorites picked out. An absolute reason as to why I am such a fan of “Peter Jackson.”

And, the end of the movie just may end up “haunting” your dreams. Now, excuse me, this weekend, I will be pulling out my “Lord of the Rings” movies to reminisce and relive the journey that followed after The Hobbit. This is one movie I will be going out to see again.

Shopping at The Children's Place for an "every day outfit" | #PLACEHoliday @ChildrensPlace

My son turned five earlier this month and we took a trip up to The Children's Place to do some shopping (one of his favorite activities).

While we browsed around, we noticed a few trends:

Chilly weather layering with cool looking hats and scarves.

Coordinating scarves, gloves and scarves for baby boys and big boys.

Bright sweaters with a plaid button-shirt underneath. Easy layering.

Character tees never go out of style! Especially vintage super heroes like the Avengers.

We had a great time shopping at The Children's Place. We went home with a nice amount of clothing, shoes and hats and spent under $80 (thanks to a 20% off coupon AND sales).

My five year old chose out a wonderful every day outfit. As a mom, it's a favorite of mine because the dark colored pants will hide stains, and the fedora takes it up a notch. The character tee features one of his favorite characters and although he does know how to tie his shoes, the shoes he chose out eliminate that task (which also means that we get out of the house faster).

Which trends will your kid wear this season? Tell me below and enter to win a $25 The Children's Place gift card!

Holiday Blogger Event at Discovery Science Center | @DiscoveryCube #IndyDSC #GingerbreadDSC

Discovery Science Center is one of our go-to places for fun and education. There’s always something new to explore. Last week, my family was invited to attend a holiday party that highlighted its newest exhibits, “Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology”, and “The Science of Gingerbread”. We were very excited to get an opportunity to experience these.

The gingerbread exhibit is one of the first things you see when you come in- you are greeted by a massive suburban village filled with every type of gingerbread creation imaginable. The “houses” ranged from standard cottages to dioramas of dinosaurs, and even gingerbread re-creations of notable movie scenes from the Indiana Jones films. I was extremely impressed by the creativity. My personal favorite was a gingerbread UPS truck.

The “villages” of baked goods are in several locations around the center, bringing holiday cheer to the whole building. Upstairs, we participated in more gingerbread-related science activities. After getting the gingerbread cookie recipe, then seeing a demonstration on the spices like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves, my little guy got to decorate a cookie (an oatmeal-raisin one) with holiday icing and candies. We also made a “gingerbread” race car (graham-crackers, candy, and frosting to hold it all together) and were able to compete against another edible vehicle on a race track. My son gained some building skills and an understanding of basic physics in the process. Our car lost- but it certainly was delicious!

As lifelong Indy fans, seeing movie props and “artifacts” (as well as real archaeological treasures) was something we could not pass up. At the entrance to the Indiana Jones experience, we each received an interactive audio tour device with headphones, and our introductory guide (voice of Harrison Ford) started off the adventure.

We followed Indy’s footprints around catacombs full of real artifacts, photos of archaeological sites, movie clips, and props from all four films, pressing in numbers to hear descriptions and movie trivia. A scavenger hunt is also programmed into the guide- it was a little confusing at first, but once we got the hang of it, we challenged each other to see who could complete it quickly. Afterwards, my son searched for treasure in a kid-friendly “archaeological” dig, then used a pulley system to learn about weight.

There is so much to do at DSC. We stopped by the Science of Hockey, played around in the new grocery store, strummed the laser harp, ate of lot of rice krispy squares, flew an airplane, and generally tried to stuff as much into two hours as possible. We ended our night by sitting in the earthquake simulator, which led to a discussion about plate tectonics and what would happen to a house of cookies if the earth shook. On the way out, we waved at Santa (my son decided against pictures- he said he was already on Santa’s good list), and received some gingerbread cookie mix to take and make at home. It smelled so delicious I was tempted to eat it in the car. If you are looking for something fun and educational for the whole family, Discovery Science Center is the place to be. There is something for everyone, and really, aren’t we all kids at heart anyway?

Pan dulce for Santa | #LatinaMom

In our Latino household, our kids leave pan dulce (sweet bread) for Santa, instead of cookies. A sweet sugary piece of goodness that goes so perfect with my cafe. This coming year will be all about combining heritage and traditions with the world that we live in today. It's starting a few days early since this is one of those traditions that has been altered. So... what did Santa get as a snack in your home?

If you like raunchy, you'll like Ted. | #TedisReal #giveaway

The hubster and I share similar interests in most of the big things in life. Movies? Not as much. I like the predictable Lifetime Movies, cheesy romances, sport movies with a happy ending and horror/mystery suspense. The hubster, on the other hand, likes typical "guy" movies, including Ted. He was uber-excited when we received it in the mail and really couldn't wait to watch it. I couldn't do it. I like Mark Whalberg as much as a the next person, but there is personally too many bad words and a tad too raunchy for me.

The hubster watched it and loved it. It lived up to his expectations and simply searching #Tedisreal on Twitter leads you to believe that he is not alone. Let me put it to you this way, if you like Family Guy, you'll like Ted. And if you've already seen Ted, then you need to hop on down and enter the flash giveaway for a blu-ray/DVD copy of Ted!

Synopsis

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane delivers his signature boundary-pushing humor in the outrageous comedy-blockbuster critics are calling “hysterically funny!” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone)

John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) is a grown man whose cherished teddy bear came to life as the result of a childhood wish…and hasn’t left his side since. Can John’s relationship with longtime girlfriend, Lori (Mila Kunis), move forward with his lovably profane buddy in the picture?

Chocolate Abuelita is the tastiest hug | @ElMejorNido #Giveaway

There are many things in my life as a mami that I do because of it's what my mami did with me. I have my cafe with them in the morning, I eat pan dulce with the kids by the pound, and I have chocolate Abuelita with them during those cold nights when we want to hang out just a little bit longer after bedtime has passed. I consider those moments as important as the times when we share hugs. When we drink this traditional drink, I am sharing my love for them and passing on our culture via a sip of cinnamon chocolate goodness.

Each sip was like a warm hug from my mami and as the kids grow older, I hope that they will see it the same way. I love being able to hang out with them and share a special tradition that is so delicious, and thanks to the Nestlé's Instant Mexican Chocolate Drink Mix, also so convenient.

I like to give this chocolate treat a little extra touch of goodness by following these three steps:

  • Step 1 - Measure out a rounded tablespoon full of instant chocolate drink mix
  • Step 2 - Add 8 oz. of warm milk (whatever variety)
  • Step 3 - Mix well and add a cinnamon stick for an extra bit of flavor

Hugs can come in various different forms (the tastiest comes in the form of Chocolate Abuelita), and now you can send a virtual hug by visiting the Abuelita Facebook page and clicking the “Send an Abrazo with Nestle” tab.

Now, my favorite part of this post. I'm giving away a Chocolate Abuelita gift pack just like the one pictured below. Enter via the widget below. Buena suerte!
